Top 10 Most Overused Words and Phrases of the 2010s
The 2010s was a weird decade. Lots of words were overused, either used incorrectly or used when there was no point in using them at all.
Here's a gander at some of the most blatantly overused words and phrases that plagued the 2010s.
-
Cancer
Yes, this deadly illness was extremely overused in the mid-to-late 2010s. Most notably, it was used by edgelords who thought calling anything they disliked a deadly illness made them look cool. In all honesty, it did the exact opposite and made them come off as insufferable.
-
AIDS
Another illness that, much like cancer, was overused to describe things people personally disliked. I get that we all have opinions on what we consider to be good or bad, but I'm glad that as a society we've mostly stopped using these two words in particular in that way, because it got old fast.
-
Autistic
People had a massive habit of using words incorrectly in the 2010s. This word is another example. If anything seemed dumb or unintelligent to them, people would use this word to describe it, even though autism is a spectrum disorder and not a mental illness.

KYS
-
Retarded
A slur used to mock the mentally disabled. It was overused to an obnoxious degree in the 2010s to the point it became annoying. I don't approve of using slurs in any context, and this word became so commonplace that it got old and aggravating fast.
-
Woke
A redundant conservative buzzword that holds no merit in a conversation. If a TV show has anything a conservative dislikes (i.e., a gay couple or a character of a different ethnic background), then this word was commonly used to describe said show. If it had a female character who wasn't just a sex object and actually had a personality, this word was thrown around too.
If you use the word woke in its correct context, as the past tense of wake up, that's fine. But in general, it became oversaturated and impossible to take seriously. I still can't take anyone who uses this word seriously.
-
Snowflake
Much like the word "woke," "snowflake" is another term that became overused in the 2010s, usually by, you guessed it, Republicans who couldn't stand a Democrat's opposing view and used it as a way to silence them and shut down the conversation.
It's not as overused in the 2020s, but I can't say I'm surprised all the same.
-
Cringe
Another word that became overused by edgelords was this one. While it is an actual word and not just a buzzword, it still became overused to a large extent.
It's normally used to describe things that are embarrassing or uncomfortable, and in that context it's fine. But calling everything you dislike "cringe" is about as noteworthy and interesting as dried-up cement.
-
Discord Mod/Reddit Mod
These jokes became commonplace in the mid-to-late 2010s and got old fast. I don't see much comedic value in them when all of the jokes have the same setup, punchline, and overall atmosphere as the last one.
I've heard of worse things, but it did become overused and dull within two years, maybe less. But I digress.
-
Swag
It warrants a position, but I would put it at number ten and not anywhere close to the top five. My reasoning is that after 2014, people stopped using it altogether and it didn't take long to die off.
It became popular and overused due to Justin Bieber and Austin Mahone, but I digress.
