Best Steve Vai Songs

The Top Ten
1 For the Love of God

It's undeniable that this is Vai's best song. I've been to a few live concerts, and I always get pumped up, hyped, and happy in all of them. However, when I saw For the Love of God live, it was so powerful, way more powerful than anything I've ever listened to before. This song is simply amazing.

The music video playing in the background gave it such power as well. There's nothing to dislike about this song.

I was just out of words when I heard it the second time. So many emotions and an epic song. I cannot describe that feeling. It feels like you are just one and your position cannot be described, and that song is going on.

It's like I'm in a dream. I'm sleeping, and when the song is over, I'm full of energy. Mind-blowing, awesome song. Definitely God-like.

2 Tender Surrender

My first encounter with this song was thus (keep in mind I had only heard Steve Vai's name in passing).

Minute one: Wow, I actually like this riff (that's saying a lot, I'm a bit of a music snob).

Minute two: Holy cannoli, this guy's got soul.

Minute three: This is the best guitar solo I've ever heard, period.

Minute four: I can't comprehend how each phrase keeps building on the last.

Minute five: I must know who this Vai is. Dude is amazing. I must become him or he must become me.

Minute six: Just kidding, there is no minute six.

This song is my personal favorite. The intro sounds almost feminine and sensual. Then, as the song progresses, the raw shredding and high climax come in, then back to the soft feminine side, finishing with an awesome thunder-like effect. Rate: 100%

3 Whispering a Prayer

This song is criminally underrated. It is beautiful in so many ways and really showcases how much emotion can be conveyed through a song. You rock, Steve!

The song touches you on so many levels. It describes so much in so little space. And every time you hear it, it keeps getting better.

Absolutely beautiful... when he doesn't mess it up and go off on one of his mad whammy expressions. The Alive in an Ultra World album for this song, most definitely.

4 Bad Horsie

Bad Horsie is such an atmospheric track. You've got that big meaty riff, the smoking bluesy lead parts with that perfect wah tone, not to mention Vai's classic tremolo acrobatics! Awesome tune.

This is not the number one Vai track only because I think Tender Surrender appeals to a broader audience.

A badass riff, awesome bass, great skills and guitar techniques, tapping, skillful drums. This makes you feel like you want to go to a shooting yard, grab a rifle, and start shooting some bottles because you're a badass when you hear this sum of perfect bad sounds in this masterpiece.

5 Building the Church

Real Illusions: Reflections is the first studio album since Steve Vai's 1999 release The Ultra Zone. The album was released on February 22, 2005. It is the first piece of a three-part concept album about a town visited by the godsent Pamposh and his construction of the Church.

"Lotus Feet," the seventh song (which is considered the most emotional - see The Seventh Song), was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The song was recorded live in the Netherlands in 2004 during Vai's "The Aching Hunger Tour."

6 The Crying Machine

This song is so funky. It is one of my favorite songs. Not as epic as Lotus Feet, Liberty, or For the Love of God, but right next to them.

7 Now We Run

Amazing, really gets you pumping. Especially the live version. Absolutely amazing.

8 Lotus Feet

It's not all shredding and fancy tricks, just a beautifully crafted song played to perfection. Masterpiece.

9 Juice
10 The Audience Is Listening

I love this song so much. It's his best riff, in my opinion, and is done flawlessly. Vai is a guitar god.

The Contenders
11 Erotic Nightmares

Should be way higher. Like, I mean, way higher.

12 Melissa's Garden
13 Die to Live

Amazing song. The ideas in the song are beautifully expressed. Playing it might not be technically as difficult as some of his other stuff from the list, but composition-wise, this might be his best.

Whether it's the 7/8 time signature used in most of the song or the chord changes, the song sounds like it was composed by a Western classical maestro.

Great song. The longer version on the "Where the Wild Things Are" DVD is even better than the studio version.

14 Liberty

Very expressive and meant in every way.

15 Boston Rain Melody

Amazing song! I don't understand why he doesn't play this live.

16 I Know You're Here
17 Natural Born Boy

It's hard to have a best, but this is certainly my favorite.

18 Blue Powder

This is a great ballad. It's about peace and happiness.

19 Sisters

A good vibe in such a short track. Amazing sound based around chords, and the change midway through the song really defines this track.

Reminds me a lot of my favorite song, Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix. This song just seems so perfect and shouldn't be down here at 22.

I would have thought this song would have been higher on the list. It's an amazing song.

20 Speeding (Vault Version)
21 Touching Tongues
22 Mjolnir Mix
23 The Animal
24 I'm the Hell Outta Here
25 Windows to the Soul

This is, as far as soloing on one theme, his all-time greatest and most emotional song. You just feel his love for his beloved.

Great passionate song. Technically, this song contains more than you will be able to understand and achieve in a lifetime of guitar playing.

How can this be down at 49? It may not be the best part of a flawless album like Tender Surrender and For the Love of God, but that's because it isn't from a flawless album. It is the single most passionate and melodic piece of music ever to be written, and after a couple of listens, you can't disagree.
