Top 10 Music Artists that Released Two or More Albums in One Year

EPs count.

Some music artists are prolific. This doesn't always mean quality, but some of the albums released in one year were incredible.

I admit it was difficult to find a balance between the quality and quantity of the albums by the respective artists.

The Top Ten
  1. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Magical Mystery Tour (1967)

From 1963 to 1965, the Beatles released two albums each year. There's an argument to be made for each Beatles album being a classic in its own right, but the band released two unimpeachable classics in 1967: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in June and the weirdest Beatles album of all, the Magical Mystery Tour movie soundtrack, just five months later.

They're basically one giant double album, which makes them even better.

  2. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys (1969)

Nice to see them at the top. It's amazing that they had three solid albums in a year - I don't think I would be capable of doing that.

Unfortunately, I think the workload is one of the factors that contributed to their downfall.

I put them at #1 because they released three classic LPs consisting of 26 songs, 22 of which were written by John Fogerty.

After the release of Willy and the Poor Boys in November 1969, CCR wouldn't release another album for a whopping eight months - 1970's also-classic Cosmo's Factory.

My mum probably did cartwheels of joy when this happened.

  3. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Paranoid (1970)

Yep, yep. Two of the most classic and iconic heavy metal albums released by the same artist and in the same year. How rare is that?

    Both are albums.

  4. Queen - Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack (1974)

For me, Queen II is far superior to Sheer Heart Attack. They're both good, but Queen II is the best of the two.

  5. Elvis Presley - Elvis Country (I'm 10,000 Years Old), Love Letters from Elvis, Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas (1971)

  6. King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Five Albums (2017)

These albums were all amazing and unique in their own way. I especially like Flying Microtonal Banana, an uncommon example of microtones in rock.

The Beatles and David Bowie deserve to be on this list, but 5 albums! Each with a different character and style. Purely untouchable.

Revolutionary band! I mean, they released five albums in one year, and they even put out an album that is owned by the fans (Polygondwanaland).

  7. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited (1965)

1965 saw the release of Dylan's first two "electric" albums and arguably the best albums of his career: Bringing It All Back Home in March, and Highway 61 Revisited in August.

  8. The Beatles - Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road (1969)

  9. The Beatles - Help!, Rubber Soul (1965)

  10. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II (1969)

This was just one year after their formation.

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

Taylor Swift - Folklore, Evermore (2020)

  13. ?

Elton John - Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973)

  14. The Contenders
  15. Brockhampton - Saturation I, Saturation II, Saturation III (2017)

Hands down, best artists of all time. No competition.

  16. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love (1967)

These are the best and fourth-best albums of Jimi Hendrix.

The second is Live at Monterey, and the third is Live at Woodstock.

  17. David Bowie - Low, Heroes (1977)

In 1977, he also co-wrote and produced Iggy Pop's first two solo albums - The Idiot and Lust for Life. That's a total of 4 albums between January and October of 1977.

  18. Deep Purple - Shades of Deep Purple, The Book of Taliesyn (1968)

Both are albums. Shades of Deep Purple is their debut studio album.

Deep Purple were very quick: they formed in 1968 and released two albums in the year of their formation.

They released two good albums in the same year they were formed. It's pretty hard to form a band and release two albums in the same year.

  19. Voivod - Thrashing Rage, Rrröööaaarrr (1986)

  20. Green Day - Uno, Dos, Tre (2012)

This is THREE albums in one year, and they were amazing. How is this not higher?

I love this band so much. They saved my life.

  21. Uriah Heep - Salisbury, Look at Yourself (1971)

Both are albums, and some of my favorite songs are on them. However, their best album came out later in the '70s.

  22. System of a Down - Mezmerize, Hypnotize (2005)

  23. Uriah Heep - Demons and Wizards, The Magician's Birthday (1972)

Demons and Wizards is regarded by many fans and critics alike as Uriah Heep's best album. According to AllMusic, the album "solidified Uriah Heep's reputation as a master of gothic-inflected heavy metal."

Hansi Kürsch of Blind Guardian named his second band after this album. He also did a cover of a song from this album ("Blind Guardian - The Wizard").

  24. Buckethead - Sideway Streets, Squid Ink Lodge, Project Little Man, The Moltrail, Forest of Bamboo, Weird Glows Gleam, Collect Itself, The Left Panel, and more (2015)

Guys, this is a very interesting case - 117 albums in 2015! Most of them are EPs and are for download only.

    RecklessGreed, thanks for adding it.

  25. The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Take It from the Man!, Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request, Thank God for Mental Illness (1996)

In just 5 months, they released 3 albums, consisting of 49 tracks and totaling 3 and a half hours of music.

Like Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Brian Jonestown Massacre somehow managed to release 3 albums in a single year, but BJM outdid CCR in two ways:

    1. All three of BJM's 1996 albums are over an hour long, while CCR's didn't break 40 minutes.

    2. While CCR released its first 1969 album in January, BJM didn't release its first 1996 album until May. This means that in just 5 months, the BJM released 3 albums with 49 tracks in 3 and a half hours.

  26. Bob Dylan - The Times They Are a-Changin', Another Side of Bob Dylan (1964)

  27. Belle & Sebastian - Tigermilk, If You're Feeling Sinister (1996)

Belle and Sebastian's music isn't complex, but the sheer size of the band and the depth of the song arrangements suggest that each album should take at least a couple of weeks to finish. However, the band recorded its first two, and best, albums in just a matter of days in 1996 and released both of them between June and November of that year.

  28. The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night, Beatles for Sale (1964)

  29. The Beatles - Please Please Me, With the Beatles (1963)
