Top Ten Music Artists With At Least Four Number One Hit Singles In Austria

A number one hit is always a status symbol for a music artist. It usually grants the respective song to be remembered for years to come and still get much airplay even after the artist's successful phase is over.

But these artists are beyond that. They achieved what even some of the most famous musicians of all time never did: having four songs that topped the Austrian charts - or even more. It can be said without a doubt that they left an impact on Austrian pop culture and won't be forgotten anytime soon. Some of these will come to surprise to American audiences, others will be expected.
The Top Ten
1 The Beatles The Beatles were an English pop rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The members consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. They were soon known as the foremost and most influential act of rock era. Rooted in skiffle, beat, and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads and Indian music to psychedelia and hard rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways. ...read more.

Artists that surprisingly didn't qualify for the list:

Michael Jackson: the man who made the best selling album in Austria ("Thriller"), had numerous top ten hits everyone knows, but never topped the charts with a single.

Phil Collins: the man who arguably gets the most airplay out of all artists with lots of different songs had only one number one hit single - "In the Air Tonight".

Falco: Austria's most famous popular musician had his share of hits, including three number one singles - "Der Kommissar", "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Jeanny".

Madonna: almost every single she released became a major hit in Austria and got much love, but only two songs managed to climb to the top - "La Isla Bonita" and "Hung Up"

ABBA: definitely among the groups that everyone loves and that have dozens of songs you hear on the daily. The craze for ABBA was similar to Beatlemania. But still, among their numerous top ten hits, they only had three number one singles - "Fernando", ...more

"Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby" (1966, double A-Side single)

"All You Need is Love / Baby You're a Rich Man" (1967, double A-Side single)

"Lady Madonna / The Inner Light" (1968, double A-Side single)

"Hey Jude / Revolution" (1968, double A-Side single)

"Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da / While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (1969, double A-Side single)

"Get Back / Don't Let Me Down" (1969, double A-Side single)

"The Ballad of John & Yoko / Old Brown Shoe" (1969, double A-Side single)

"Let It Be / You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)" (1970, double A-Side single)

Interesting that the released one of their greatest songs "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as a single there. It would have been a guaranteed #1 anywhere, the band did not release any singles at all off the White Album in the UK or USA. Any idea if this was done by a local record distributor or?

Rainhard Fendrich is a legendary Austrian singer-songwriter who made some amazing works with critical undertones, including "Brüder", "Zwischen eins und vier", "I Am From Austria" and "Es hat sie keiner gefragt". 7 Rednex

Rednex is a Swedish country band that are actually a pretty accurate depiction of what Europeans think of when they hear the term "country" (although "Old Pop..." sounds much like a parody of their own previous number one hit and is much lorr humorous). Not as a bias, we just don't have this genre over here otherwise. May I say that "Wish You Were Here" is a really beautiful love song that would have deserved to be an international hit. The song spent 10 weeks atop of the Austrian charts.

The only other well known country band over here are the German TheBossHoss.

PS: I really like their album "Sex and Violins" (which includes three of their number one hits), but it also has one of the worst album covers ever made. Imagine hearing the emotive "Wish You Were Here" on the radio, wanting to get the album and then have an artwork like this... just google it.

"Cotton Eye Joe" (1994)
"Old Pop In An Oak" (1995)
"Wish You Were Here" (1995)
"The Spirit of the Hawk" (2000)

Christina Stürmer is an Austrian alternative rock singer who was first recognized in Austria as a participant in the talent search show "Starmania", where she came in second place. Barely anyone knows who won anymore, but she made a huge career afterwards, also became very popular in Germany, and somewhat popular in Switzerland. I really like her. She has very charismatic performances and a likable attitude.

9 Rihanna Robyn Rihanna Fenty is a Barbadian-American pop singer. Born in Saint Michael and raised in Bridgetown, she first entered the music industry by recording demo tapes under the direction of record producer Evan Rogers in 2003. She ultimately signed a recording contract with Def Jam Recordings after auditioning for its then-president, hip-hop producer and rapper Jay Z.
