Top 10 Music Genres that Most Need to Be Renamed

The Top Ten
  1. Metalcore

Only metalcore and nu-metal make sense on this list, since they contain music genres in the title they have little to do with. The other ones are basically just degrading the genres. The opinion on the genres shouldn't be part of their names.

Hardcore is not metal. Metal is classical inspired.

  2. Nu Metal

I always considered a lot of Nu Metal bands just Modern Rock. Basically anything Hard Rock-ish to me that was new was considered Modern Rock. Now that I'm more aware of subgenres, I can see the differences but nah, it's all Modern Rock.

What I know for sure is that the word "metal" must be removed from its name as soon as possible.

  3. Hair Metal

The most misleading music genre ever. There's nothing metal about this. It's just a subgenre of hard rock with long-haired musicians, hence the name hair metal, but the metal part doesn't make sense.

  4. Alternative Metal

Alternative metal is a music genre that infuses heavy metal with influences from alternative rock and other genres not typically associated with metal. It emerged in the late 1980s and gained popularity in the 1990s. Bands like Tool, Deftones, and Faith No More are often cited as pioneers of the genre... read more

Call it "Hard Alternative," plain and simple. Additionally, that was the original name before it was renamed "Alternative Metal."

Furthermore, bands normally labeled as Nu Metal and Post-Grunge can also fit into Hard Alternative very well. It is mostly derived from Alternative Rock with some Heavy Metal emphasis, though not enough to consider it a Metal song.

  5. Pop

Pop is a synonym of bubble gum music, which is not popular, but is a synonym of popular. What?!

  6. Industrial Metal

I agree with Martin_Canine - again, a rock genre was mistakenly called "metal." Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, and Rammstein aren't metal. They are Industrial Rock. This item isn't stupid - Industrial Metal is a fake subgenre because the bands called "Industrial Metal" don't actually play metal.

Strapping Young Lad are Death/Thrash Metal with industrial influences. Fear Factory are Death and Groove Metal with industrial influences. This is very different from Marilyn Manson.

To Iron and Steel because it is industrial.

  7. Crunkcore

Crunkcore, also referred to as crunk punk or scrunk, is a fusion genre that mixes elements from crunk, post-hardcore, heavy metal, pop, electronic, and dance music. The style is known for its use of screamed vocals, hip hop-inspired beats, and often sexually provocative lyrics. It developed during the... read more

  8. Dubstep

  9. Black Metal

Black metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that began in the early 1980s. It is characterized by fast tempos, shrieking vocals, and raw recording quality. The second wave of black metal, which originated in Norway, gained international attention for both its music and controversies.

To something like Music Worshipping the Unhallowed Throne of Satan.

  10. Thrash Metal

Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that emerged in the early 1980s and served as an early precursor to extreme metal. It is known for its fast and aggressive guitar work, shredding solos, and use of double-bass drumming. Vocals in thrash metal can range from melodic singing to intense shouting.... read more

    Punk Rock

Punk rock is a subgenre of rock music that emerged in the mid-1970s. It is typically characterized by rebellious lyrics and down-stroked power chords played on electric guitars. Bands such as Bad Religion, the Sex Pistols, and Green Day (which leans toward pop-punk) are examples of this genre... read more

    Easycore

  14. The Contenders
  15. Rap

Modern rap doesn't sound a lot like traditional rap. The genre as a whole can stay the same, but we need more sub-genres like mumble-rap, trap-rap, hip-pop, thug rap, rap & b.

  16. Reggaeton

Little to do with reggae. It should rather follow the template of K-pop, J-pop and should be called L-pop instead.

  17. Bro-Country

  18. Grunge

Grunge, sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound, is a subgenre of alternative rock. It originated in the Pacific Northwest during the mid-1980s and became widely popular in the early 1990s. Bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden helped bring the genre into the mainstream, influencing fashion... read more

Not sure about this one, though Grunge has three different sounds:

1st type is Alternative mixed with Punk (Nirvana).

2nd is Alternative mixed with Hard Rock (Pearl Jam).

3rd is Alternative mixed with Metal (Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Melvins).

To the genre that killed metal.

  19. Pop Punk

People said that this music genre is an oxymoron because "punk" is anti-mainstream, but "pop" is mainstream. What do you think? I like this music genre.

  20. Gangsta Rap

  21. Post-Grunge

  22. Classical

  23. Dream Pop

The list mostly includes bad genres with great genres in their name. Here's an example for the opposite.

  24. Blues-Rock

Blues rock is a fusion genre combining elements of blues and rock. It is mostly an electric ensemble-style music with instrumentation similar to electric blues and rock, including electric guitar, electric bass, and drums, often accompanied by Hammond organ. The genre gained popularity in the 1960s with... read more

To trash music. Blues sucks. Heavy Metal is the best.

  25. Rock-Rap

  26. Country Rap

  27. Blues-Jazz

It would look good changed to "Bluezz." If ever I owned a Blues / Jazz Bar, I would call it Misty's (or Miss T's) Bluezz Bar.

  28. Post-Punk

It's pretty removed from punk. It's generally quite nothing like punk. But many post-genres are confusing.

  29. Shoegaze
