    Sri Lanka is much cleaner compared to other countries in South Asia. I visited the country just after the civil war and again a year ago, and I was really impressed by the progress the country has made.

    The road network is good except in the capital, Colombo, where you can get stuck in traffic for hours. I almost missed my flight if not for the airport highway.

    The people are very humble and welcoming. The food is a bit spicy from my perspective. I highly recommend trying the beautiful waves in Arugambay if you are into surfing.

    It's a warm country, so pack your summer clothes. The nature in the highlands is very soothing. Don't rent vehicles if you're heading to the highlands. Instead, take the train, which offers an amazing six-hour journey. I know it is quite long, but it was one of the best experiences I had during both of my visits to Sri Lanka.

    Take mosquito repellent, as there are a lot of mosquitoes. Don't bring anything decorated with images of Buddha, as this could cause serious trouble. Unless you stay in star-class hotels, it is really cheap to travel in Sri Lanka, though it is not as cheap as India.

    Locals love when visitors use a few Sri Lankan words, so just Google a few before your visit. Have cash ready, as many places outside Colombo do not accept bank cards.

    You just can't hate a country because of a few bad people.
