Most Overrated Albums of 2018

This list is about albums that in my personal opinion get a lot of undeserved attention, not saying this albums aren't good but they definitely didn't deserve the hype they get
The Top Ten
1 Invasion of Privacy - Cardi B

This is the only album on the list that I personally disliked, what is so special about this album? Is just your generic female trap album, I mean it has some interesting ideas like the Latin beat in "I Like It" but it's ruined by Bad Bunny and J Balvin, and that's the thing, most of the features here and extremelly mediocre, Cardi B is not even a pretty great rapper

Nobody liked this album, how it won best rap album over ksg, Astro world, ye, kamikaze, Daytona, etc blows my mind.

At least with this album a lot of people realized that Cardi B was trash.

Overrated? More like overhated. A lot of people trashing it.

2 Astroworld - Travis Scott

Travis Scott is one of those bad artists that everyone loves to pretend is good.

3 Scorpion - Drake

What's funny though is that I thought this album was a bit more varied than his previous efforts. I LOVED "If You're Reading This It's Too Late". His emotions were at their roughest, the beats atmospheric and dark. And it was different than the flexing you know from other artists. Then, it became a bit repetitive. "Views" and "More Life" were solid, but they lacked surprises, although they had individual peaks (e.g. the hit song "Hotline Bling"). I think compared to that, "Scorpion" sounds much more refreshing. It is poppier, relies more on sing along choruses, which brings in more variation, because it's not always the same flow. Also, the beats are different this time: the way samples are used makes it get a strong oldschool hip hop vibe, especially strong on "Nice For What". Yeah, I liked this.

Like Cardi B, pretty much only overrated for hits. If this album didn't have hits then nobody would care about it. I mean, like who actually cares about this album other than for the hits? I haven't seen anybody giving any good reasons for this being a good album other than the typical "it got hits" or "it's been on the billboard for so many weeks so it's good" crap.

Same as with Kamikaze, mixed opinion with critics but loved by the people, personally this album shows that Drake doesn't have any ideas anymore, some of the songs are great but most of it is complete filler, he can just put 10 songs in this and the final result would be way better than this

At this point, I am aching for Drake to return to the quality status he had in 2014-2015, because his albums after that point have more filler than the entirety of Naruto Shippuden.

4 Ta13oo - Denzel Curry

Everybody was calling this the best rap album of 2018, nope, no way. Sure the production is alright but Denzel just isn't that lyrical and he raps as if he is ripping off Memphis rappers. Denzel, you're not from Memphis! If I want to listen to this style of rap I'll just listen to Triple 6 Mafia and 90's Memphis rap, who did what Denzel was trying to a lot better. Denzel just isn't that good of a rapper at the end of the day. He isn't bad by any means, but he's pretty average. But I guess when you're used to Kodak Black, Lil Uzi and Drake he would seem like a lyrical genius...

Everybody has been raving about this album and Denzel in 2018 but he is honestly just not that special. He isn't a bad rapper but he's not as lyrical as people make him out to be, there are far better rappers than him like Locksmith and Phonte who people probably haven't even listened to. I guess if you're a trap fan you'll enjoy this album but I am not a big fan of trap and I really only liked the first few songs on the album, but like I said if you're a fan of that kind of rap this will probably be impressive to you.

Nah, this album was amazing. The production is amazing here and I dig his flows. It's not even overrated because not many people like it in the first place. The metal instrumental of Percs is good, Denzel surprisingly goes well with the spooky aesthetic of this album. Good album but Denzel seems to show more of a darker trap route on this album and I guess that's why most people won't like it.

This guy is pretty disappointing as a whole. The way everybody was praising him I was thinking he was going to be an amazing rapper, but he let me down pretty hard.

5 Daytona - Pusha T
6 Kids See Ghosts - Kids See Ghosts
7 Ye - Kanye West
8 Black Panther - Kendrick Lamar

Pretty much any album with Kendrick Lamar is going to be overrated and overhyped by the masses who think he's the best rapper of all time.

9 Sweetener - Ariana Grande

I agree very much. I found it to be her weakest album, musically. She barely got to show the singing ability she definitely has, which in and of itself would be okay, as Mariah Carey's "Caution" pretty much did the same and was good. The major problem with it is that its songs have little replay value and often feel longer than they actually are. Some of the tunes are weakly produced (even though he's usually a good producer, these are the ones by Pharrell), others have odd segments ("get it, get it, get it / hit it, hit it, hit it"), others are creep slow and have no development throughout. For a pop album as she usually did, it's not catchy enough and has no real energy, and for a RnB or artpop album, it has too little atmosphere. "No Tears To Cry" is the best song off it, it is a really good earworm pop song.

But the reason why I can still appreciate this album despite not liking it is probably also the reason why it appeared highly on most best of 2018 lists: Grande didn't ...more

Is impressive how much Ariana's popularity increased this year, not even when she released Dangerous Woman (two years ago) seems that she get as big as she was in 2014, but man this album is just average at best, I liked a few singles over it but why everybody is making it looks like the next pop queen?

10 A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships - The 1975

I give this album some credit because is the most variated and unique album the 1975 has released yet, however people loved this album to death, even compared it to OK Computer, which is ridiculous
OK Computer worked because it didn't comment on social issues as directly as this album did, which is the main flaw this album has, it might be good, but not great, and not even at the same level OK Computer is

The Contenders
11 Kamikaze - Eminem

This is one of the albums on the list that didn't get so overrated by critics but more from the people that listen to it, I mean the album is okay, at least is better than the garbage of Revival, but in what planet is this album the best rap album of the year? Better than Tattoo? Better than Daytona? Better than Kids See Ghosts? That is just crap, is avarage at best, flows may be pretty good but that's Eminem, is obvious to expect that from him, beats are just trying way too hard to mock all over the trap genre

What I find funny is how insanely well received this was by German critics. They hailed it like it is almost as good as his first few works. SPOILER: it isn't. Eminem's problem is that he's stuck in post-Eminem era, and everything he has to say wa there before, and more meaningful. His career was perfect, as if written for a screenplay, and this is, at best, a post-post-credit scene.

Chapter I: "The Slim Shady LP", aka "Introduction"
After his unknown underground album "Infinite", Eminem hits mainstream success with a provocative album and a new controversial style he introduced. A wider audience wasn't used to this shock value, parents and the media did not know how to deal with this man - does this music harm their children?

Chapter II: "The Marshall Mathers LP" and "The Eminem Show", aka "Acclaim"

Eminem had changed the game, and sees himself confronted with the consequences. A style which he never ...more

This is what I hate about this stupid page, no one understand how the meaning of "overrated" is, nobody liked Invasion of Privacy? Look at the Wikipedia article, jesus I seriously don't get why people still browse this useless web

Eminem is immature on this album but it sounds pretty good at times, but he does get petty and abrasive. It's better than that trash Revival but it's not amazing or whatever, it's just okay.

12 Harder Than Ever - Lil Baby
13 Tha Carter V - Lil Wayne
14 Golden Hour - Kacey Musgraves

Good album, but just way too loved by everyone, I don't complain about this album too much because I really liked it but is way too overloved by critics and people, that is impossible to not put it on the list

This album wasn't even that amazing to begin with. It was a mediocre album with good instrumentals and that's pretty much it.

15 Dirty Computer - Janelle Monae

Highly aesthetic music between pop, RnB and funk. Even moreso, its lyrics authentically reflect the feelings of an LGBTQ+ person that suddenly stands in the eye of the public and becomes a star, and now has angsts about their sexuality, not knowing how they would react.

Same as with Golden Hours, good album but just way too overloved

16 beerbongs & bentleys - Post Malone

2Bough, a German producer and YouTube critic, repeatedly called Post Malone one of the greatest talents that we have these days. And I say he is right. Malone works beyond any boundaries of a genre, he is heavy when he needs to be, drowsy when he feels like it and melancholic when he has to let it all out. What is the quintessence of this album: money can't buy happiness. In a capitalistically oriented world, Malone reached everything: he got money, fame and luxury, but that doesn't protect him from heartbreak, mental illness or his own feelings.

If THIS garbage is what passes off as good new music, I can see why "oldies" & "classic" stations are getting more and more popular...

Verbal vomit from a freak show.

Same as with Scorpion and Kamikaze, no need to explain why, 2018 was basically the year of Post Malone

17 Die Lit - Playboy Carti

I mean, you can actually give some credit to Carti for being more experimental than the other artists in the trap scene, but then again is not as good as critics make it to look like, is just avarage at best

Amazing productions but literally everything else about it sucks.

18 Trench - Twenty One Pilots

No. Underrated.

19 You Won't Get What You Want - Daughters
20 Be The Cowboy - Mitski

Same as Golden Hour and Dirty Computer, good album but way too overpraised

21 Culture 2 - Migos

Eh, not many people like it in the 1st place so no, not overrated.

22 Dummy Boy - 6ix9ine

Sure the worst rated album of the year by critics is overrated

Lol no one liked this
