Top 10 Smartest Comic Book Superheroes

You've seen them build suits of armor out of scrap in a cave. You've watched them outwit alien warlords, solve problems the smartest scientists couldn't crack, and run circles around entire teams with just a laptop and a plan. These are the comic book superheroes who bring brains to the brawl.

Sure, super strength is great and flight is flashy, but sometimes the sharpest weapon in a hero's arsenal is pure brainpower, along with maybe a degree or five from fictional Ivy Leagues.

This list is your chance to weigh in on which heroes truly earn the title of smartest. Are you more impressed by the tech inventors, the master tacticians, or the ones who can rewrite the laws of physics while quipping mid-battle? There's no single way to be smart in the comic book world. Some of these heroes work in labs, others lead from the front lines, and a few just seem to know everything, which is either really cool or deeply suspicious.

The Top Ten
  1. Batman

Batman, also known as Bruce Wayne, is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. On film, Batman has been portrayed by Lewis Wilson, Robert Lowery... read more

Bruce Wayne doesn't have any powers. Unlike many other superheroes, the crime-fighting life wasn't just handed to him. No, he had to work for it. And he did, since he was ten years old. He honed his body to physical perfection and trained his brain to mental and academic perfection.

He learned more than fifty languages and studied or obtained degrees in subjects like biology, math, physics, mythology, advanced chemistry, technology, criminal justice, forensics, medical sciences, and more. Batman is considered the "World's Greatest Detective," a title that is not exaggerated.

Batman is considered the second smartest person on the entire planet, Lex Luthor being the first. However, Batman has single-handedly foiled Luthor's schemes more than once.

You could say that Superman has stopped Luthor on his own more often than Batman. However, given the fact that Superman usually deduces Luthor's plan by using his super hearing and sight, it does not make him smarter than Batman, who resorts to his brain. Although fairly smart, Clark relies too much on his powers to be considered a genius.

Batman doesn't fully trust many people, and even those he does trust, he ensures he is prepared to take them down if necessary. While Wonder Woman was angered by this and Superman was hurt, Batman refused to play it by trust. He played it smart. He has a backup plan for everything, doesn't trust what he sees at first, and does not pick between two bad choices but instead invents another one.

  2. Iron Man

Iron Man is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by writer and editor Stan Lee, developed by scripter Larry Lieber, and designed by artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. Iron Man first appeared in Tales of Suspense #39 in 1963.... read more

He is the best and the smartest. I mean, how can a guy create a robot more intelligent than himself and capable of global destruction?

He is a genius. He built his first suit in a cave with a common man to assist him. He created everything he owns. He created a program, or Artificial Butler (J.A.R.V.I.S.), which can run his company, talk to him, and do all sorts of things. He is by far the most intelligent or the most genius superhero of all time.

Sure, Batman is clever and smart, but he does not actually apply this knowledge. Think about it. His suit and weapons have flaws, and the bad guys he fights are simple thugs, robbers, and a clown. For God's sake, a clown! Meanwhile, Iron Man is a genius. He follows through with his inventions and fights legitimate bad guys, not minor robbers.

  3. Mr. Fantastic

He should be number one, but sadly, Batman and Ironman's popularity (and possibly their much better movies) have beaten out Mr. Fantastic for the top two.

In my opinion, the order should be:

    1. Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic)

    2. Tony Stark (Ironman)

    3. Hank Pym (Ant-Man)

    4. Bruce Banner (Hulk)

    5. T'Challa (Black Panther)

    6. Bruce Wayne (Batman)

    7. Clark Kent (Superman)

    8. Dr. McCoy (Beast)

    9. Charles Xavier (Prof. X)

    10. Barry Allen/Wally West (Flash)

Spidey's smart but not top ten. Batman is really smart but not top five.

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised that he's only third on this list. Marvel, in their ranking, said that Reed is smarter than Tony. He should be first. I was tempted to vote for Batman or Iron Man because they are my two favorite heroes of all time, but we have to be honest, Reed is smarter.

  4. Spider-Man

Spider-Man is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, set within its shared universe. The character was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and writer-artist Steve Ditko and first appeared in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962) during the... read more

He made a serum in the Amazing Spider-Man comic book that regenerates body parts.

If Spider-Man focused on studying, he would be as smart or smarter than Tony Stark.

Spider-Man has an IQ level the same as Reed Richards and Tony Stark! He's definitely a genius.

  5. Hulk

Robert Bruce Banner, also known as The Hulk or Bruce Banner, is a fictional superhero in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was co-created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. In live-action films, he was portrayed by Eric Bana, and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he's... read more

A big misconception is that Hulk is dumb. Not true at all. Calm Hulk is similar to Banner in terms of intelligence. World War Hulk has all of Banner's smarts and has massive combat intelligence.

He has the intellectual skills and talents to understand the concepts of gamma radiation and the Tesseract.

Fave hero! I'm Hulk's biggest fan, yo! He is smart because he is a scientist.

  6. Black Panther

T'Challa, better known as the Black Panther, is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appearing in Fantastic Four #52 (cover-dated July 1966) during the Silver Age of Comic Books.... read more

This guy is the king of Wakanda, the most advanced city in the Marvel universe. And guess why? Because of Black Panther. I don't think Iron Man can say anything like that as a comeback. If you saw him in Captain America: Civil War, he was badass. He is totally smarter than Spidey. He definitely needs to be higher.

He used a sound weapon against Ulysses and ate a Wakandan heart-shaped herb which gave him his abilities and intelligence.

In the Marvel Universe, Black Panther is the eighth smartest man on planet Earth.

  7. Professor X

Professor Charles Francis Xavier is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics and is the founder and leader of the X-Men.

He is a powerful telepath and a leading advocate for peaceful coexistence between humans and mutants. Professor X was created by writer... read more

Charles Xavier was one of the few responsible for creating Cerebro and is an expert on genetic mutation. He should be a spot higher.

Come on! He can read minds. He can displace people's consciousness in different dimensions.

  8. Superman

Superman is a fictional comic book character and arguably the first powerful superhero of the modern era. The character was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, who were high school students in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1933. Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1, published by National... read more

Although the Bat is smarter, giving him a chance to fight against him, Superman is good at learning from his mistakes or watching and learning from others. What this Man of Steel lacks in strength, he makes up for with intelligence.

Superman is smarter than most give him credit for, but he is nowhere near as smart as Batman. People need to stop making baseless statements.

Superman is often shown to have a flawless, eidetic memory of everything he has ever seen, read, heard, or otherwise experienced.

  9. Flash

The Flash is the name of several superheroes featured in American comic books published by DC Comics. The most well-known version, Barry Allen, first appeared in Showcase #4 in October 1956 and was created by Robert Kanigher and Carmine Infantino. The character's primary power is super speed, achieved... read more

The Flash's brain can process things at extreme speeds, which enables him to counter enemy moves before they even get close to him. He can read books super fast, which allows him to learn lots of things in seconds. He once ran all the people in a burning building out onto the sidewalk, ran to the library to read hundreds of books, and used what he learned from the books to rebuild the entire building - all in a few seconds.

He's mostly known for his speed, but he should get more recognition for his creativity and ingenuity.

Flash is underrated when it comes to science, and just to be clear, I'm talking about Barry Allen, not Wally West. He's basically the same as Spider-Man. They're about the same age, loved doing experiments, and were always straight-A students.

  10. Beast

Beast is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics and is a founding member of the X-Men. His real name is Dr. Henry Philip Hank McCoy, and he is known for his blue fur, superhuman strength, agility, and intellect. Beast is also a renowned biochemist and political... read more

Hank McCoy should be higher than Bruce Banner. He created a serum that can enhance and get rid of the mutant X-gene. He also assisted in the making of Cerebro.

Hank is easily one of the smartest comic book superheroes ever to be on the pages of any comic book. He should be in the top three. Actually, it should go like this:

    1. Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards)

    2. Ant-Man (Hank Pym)

    3. Beast (Hank McCoy)

He is well known and trusted as the smartest member of the X-Men.

  16. Brainiac 5

He has twelfth-level intelligence. Saying Batman is smarter than him because he has legions of fans is like saying Nicki Minaj is a better singer than Susan Boyle because she's more popular.

    No contest.

He is intelligent enough to figure out a cure for death.
