Songs With the Most Beautiful Lead Vocals

The fourth installment in my "Songs With the Most Beautiful..." series.

The Top Ten

1 Nella Fantasia - Jackie Evancho

There is no one who comes close to this young lady. No one.

Her version is not terrible but it isn't brilliant either. I've heard a much better version of this song sung by a guy with an absolutely glorious voice.

A voice so pure, beautiful and uplifting that many people of all ages shed tears on listening to her.

Watch her sing this for Sharon Osbourne on "The Talk" and you can't help feeling uplifted.

2 God Only Knows - The Beach Boys

I really like this song a lot every single time I hear it on the radio.

Carl Wilson didn't even crack Rolling Stone's Top 100 Vocalists list. Bloody shame. Even Paul McCartney (see below) has to strain a bit when he sings God Only Knows. Carl doesn't even sound like he's trying. - PetSounds

Paul Mccartney's favorite Song! - Beatlesboy9

Loved the movie "Love and Mercy", what a great story.

3 Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel

Someone tell me why is some random cover above this classic?

This is an incredibly moving song. One of the best songs ever, yeah!

Best Vocal Performance Ever

4 Bridge Over Troubled Water - Jackie Evancho

Paul Simon did NOT write this song for Jackie - that's ridiculous! He wrote the song with Art Garfunkel for EVERYONE to enjoy. She sings this song as a cover, NOT an original song for her. Furthermore, there are better versions of this song than Jackie's.

A fantastic version of Paul Simon's timeless classic.

Sung at a charity event by Jackie Evancho. The most beautiful rendition of this song ever done.

Absolutely fantastic version by Jackie. She's the best. Thanks to Paul for writing this song for Jackie!

5 Hey Jude - The Beatles
6 Here, There and Everywhere - The Beatles

Gives me shivers - TheCuteBeatle

The lead vocal, and indeed the whole song, was inspired by God Only Knows (see above). Paul rarely uses falsetto, but he does it masterfully. - PetSounds

7 White Christmas - Bing Crosby
8 The Show Must Go On - Queen

Hey Jude is definitely better.

9th? ! The best singer sang this song and he was amazing in it!

Hey Jude ahead of The show must go on? Are you kidding?

Freddie always put so much into his songs, there will never be anyone like him, freddie was the best singer to ever live

9 Walk Away - Matt Monro

My heart misses a beat when I first hear Matt's warm voice on this song and leaves me quite breathless and in tears... It's just... Beautiful. - Britgirl

10 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Love this

Any time, pal. I must agree. It's wonderous work. - PositronWildhawk

12 Hey You - Pink Floyd
13 Rainbow Eyes - Rainbow

Ronnie James Dio, aka Mr. Golden Voice for a reason.
Very powerful yet velvety voice. Great vocal technique.
Dio's voice and the song in general sound like a music message from the center of the Universe. - Metal_Treasure

14 Life is Beautiful - Luminous
15 If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot
16 Poor Man's Moody Blues - Barclay James Harvest

... But they're not!

17 I Want to Know What Love Is - Foreigner
18 Path of Glory - Demons & Wizards

A definition of beautiful modern vocals, especially the beginning of the song. - Metal_Treasure

19 The Winner Takes It All - Abba

Amazing! Agnetha's voice cries through this song with pain! Just remarkable how she can sing such a devasting song with emotion! - ivylee

20 In My Time of Need - Opeth

Very beautiful voice and melody. - Metal_Treasure

21 Surf's Up - The Beach Boys

I'm not thinking so much of the Beach Boys' version as Brian Wilson's piano demo for a T.V. program. - PetSounds

22 Can We Still Be Friends - Todd Rundgren
23 Yesterday - The Beatles
24 Danny Boy - John McDermott
25 Fiddler on the Green - Demons & Wizards

Beautiful, emotive and expressive modern vocals. Vocal perfection leaves me in awe.
A hauntingly beautiful and sad song with relevant vocals. - Metal_Treasure

26 For My Lady - The Moody Blues
27 Thank God It's Christmas - Queen

The most beautiful vocals from Freddie. - Metal_Treasure

28 If I Had $1,000,000 - Barenaked Ladies

A little voice in the back of my mind said, "this belongs on the list! " I love its nature - the quirkiest love song ever written. - PetSounds

29 Dreaming (Tell Me) - Yngwie

...Malmsteen, that is. Vocals by Joe Lynn Turner, who has also done great work with Deep Purple and Rainbow. - BobG

30 Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
31 Thoughts - Michael Schulte
32 Miracle Machine - Blind Guardian
33 Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
34 The Way We Were - Barbra Streisand
35 As Tears Go By - Marianne Faithfull
36 Our Loved Ones - Volbeat
37 Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day
38 Both Sides Now - Judy Collins

Because there is little music education in schools, the new generation does not know what good music is. Judy should be int he top 10 along with Baez.
The variety of songs and tenure, prove their right to be rated among the best.
In fair judging, popularity by the industry, is no qualification for
pure vocal excellence. Period!

39 Here Without You - The Byrds

An intensely personal number written and beautifully performed by the late, great Gene Clark.

Not even The Beatles could pull off harmonic rock as well as The Byrds.

40 Drowning In Your Eyes - Ephraim Lewis

Deep romantic masterpiece with wonderful lyrics and impeccable vocals. Nothing less than wonderful!

41 The Bard's Song (In the Forest) - Blind Guardian
42 Catch the Wind - Donovan

FINALLY! someone knows Donovan! - LightningStrike

"In the quiet hours and minutes of uncertainty
I want to be
Deep in the warm folds of your loving mind…." - PetSounds

43 Se - Jackie Evancho

This Ennio Morricone song from the movie "Cinema Paradiso" gets the Jackie treatment on her album "Songs from the Silver Screen." Also check it out on Jackie's PBS Great Performances DVD "Music of the Movies." Splendid work. - BobG

44 Master Exploder - Tenacious D

Let it be known to everyone within five miles of his recording studio that Jack Black does not need a microphone - xandermartin98

45 Hallowed Be Thy Name - Iron Maiden
46 Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack

I have an obsession with the vocals - PositronWildhawk

47 Softly, as I Leave You - Frank Sinatra

It is absolutely tragic that the 11-year olds who make up most of the voters here at Top Tens have no idea who he was, and have never heard a single song he performed.

48 White Bird - It's a Beautiful Day
49 I Dreamed Last Night - The Moody Blues

Good song, but it's not the Moody Blues! It's by Justin Hayward and John Lodge AKA 'Blue Jays', who were two-fifths of the band. The song would no doubt have been even better if it had featured on a full-band follow-up album to Seventh Sojourn, or if they had at least invited their inspirational keyboard wizard, Mike Pinder, to participate. However the band unfortunately decided to have a rest and go their separate ways for 5 years. This was one of the songs made during that 'sabbatical' - almost a Justin Hayward solo effort. Why they didn't subsequently bust a gut to get Pinder back is a mystery to me - never the same without him.

The Moody Blues' long-term exclusion from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a true travesty. This one is really only Justin Hayward and John Lodge, but the resulting spare arrangement highlights Justin's voice beautifully.
