The Contenders: Page 2
Theatre of tragedy, type o negative, Paradise lost, Unsun, Moi Dix Mois, Tristania, Elis, Darkwell, Sirenia, Theatres des vampires and much more. Gothic metal combines the lyrics from gothic rock with the sound of metal, finished with some industrial or classical effects. It's a shame that nowadays every metal band that tries to be a little bit dark or symphonic immediately is called goth. Nightwish is symphonic, Evanescence is Nu-metal, and HIM is it's own genre, they are great bands from itself and don't need to be classified.
Epica and Katra Rock!
Did someone says Evanescense? , ok ill will him
My goodness. Whether it's technical thrash, or rudimentary thrash, it's thrash. Metallica, Megadeth and Artillery are technical thrash's best, though technical thrash wouldn't even exist without Metallica's progressive thrash. How deep does this rabbit hole need to go?
If you guy don't like bands like Heathen, Artillery, Annihilator, then you have no idea about Metal. Thrash metal on the firs place is a fair deal but this one on 21st is a shame really!
If your just starting to dip your toes in to the water of thrash metal, this is the waste deep line of the swimming pool with bands like Gama bomb, Metallica, Megadeth, annihilator, Anthrax.
Never heard of this before.V 2 Comments
Deathcore is the worst metal subgenre ever, and shouldn't be on this list at all let alone top 20. Literally every deathcore band in existence is the EXACT same thing: horrible pig squeals, generic chug-chug riffs and breakdowns for the sake of breakdowns. There is not one decent deathcore band in existence.
I actually enjoy it, but yeah, there's a lot of bad things about it. - Metalhead1997
People who can't hang with Deathcore don't know what their talking about. They don't slow down and actually listen to it, and so they claim it all sounds the same. That could be said for any genre really, and there are distinct differences in Deathcore bands. Compare Emmure (my personal favorite) with Suicide Silence. Although they are some of the more similar of bands in this genre, there have very distinct differences.
Opinions will be always just opinions, but TO ME most Deathcore bands sound too similar. Breakdowns over more breakdowns make the music very tedious and the shrieking/squealing vocal style is exhausting to listen to. - Flav
Deathcore and metalcore aren't even metal there just punk influenced by metal
Added because I think it's overhated. Yes, some bands are bad, but bands like Thy Art is Murder don't make it all about cramming in breakdowns and actually make their music aggressive, and when their breakdowns do hit, they hit harder than Chris Brown. - IronSabbathPriestV 12 Comments
Great metal genre, maybe not so skillful as tech death, but it's not necessary either. Keyboards and epic overall atmosphere. Try bands like Midnight Odyssey, Mare Incognitum...
Excellent metal genre, can be embraced by technically every metal fan. The atmosphere, the feeling, something just cosmic(or medieval sometimes). Vote for atmospheric black metal!
I was gonna vote for this, but I saw folk metal first. - WonkeyDude98
One of the best genres indeed. Favorite bands are Agalloch, Winterfylleth, Summoning and especially Saor - Doggelito98
This brand of metal makes me very wary of playing it too loud so as to not disturb my neighbours. I often navel gaze at the lyric sheet whilst whispering the choruses as loudly as I feel is acceptable to social norms.
Sleep, Electric Wizard, High on Fire, Acid Bath, Acid King, Spiritual Beggars, The Sword, The Melvins, Baroness, Orange Goblin - ryanrimmel
Kyuss and Down. Done.
Sleep is the definition of this. Don't believe me? Here, listen to "Dopesmoker". - Metalhead1997V 1 Comment
Stryper, Killswitch Engage, perhaps Tool (though they are spiritual, but who really knows with them? ), plus many others probably have Christianity in there somewhere. I've had a hard time working out Slayer's Silent Scream. They're satanic as all get up, but lyrically - taken at face value - it has anti-abortion sentiment, often associated with Christianity. Ponderous.
Christian metal is not a genre of music it is a style of lyrical content
No, I think Christian metal is both a belief system and a movement. The confusion lies in that they're not handcuffed to a genre. From Glam to Deathcore you will find it.
Not my style, but hey, Impending Doom? - Metalhead1997V 3 Comments
Though I agree with genres like Thrash and Power metal, drone is such a unique genre because you truly need to just loose yourself in the waves of sound baring down onto U. Sunn O)))'s Dark One and Monoliths and Dimensions are eerily beautiful and you truly get absorbed into it. WARNING: This not a genre that you can tap your foot or headbang to, it requires you to really listen. Also, you need a lot of patience considering most drone songs are 15 minutes long and it could be about a minute before another chord is played. So put on Sunn O))), sit back and get lost in it.
Drone Metal? Does a nuclear bombardment raining down on civilians count as drone metal? How about Clone Metal? Metallica has many of those chasing them around.
Drone is a experimental genre. Bands like Sunn O))), Boris, Earth, and Growing define this strange genre. It is comprised of long notes, and weird dark ambient sound effects. It's not for everyone. You have to appreciate drone Metal - ryanrimmel
This is boring. Sunn O))) is the only band I know of in this subgenre but it's just BORING. - Metalhead1997V 1 Comment
You guys don't know what viking metal is - it's a subgenre of black metal with influences from Nordic folk music. But it's not folk metal because folk metal is a subgenre of power metal.
Many bands from different metal subgenres use viking lyrical themes but it doesn't mean they are viking metal.
Amon Amarth sing about vikings but their music is melodic death metal and not viking metal/black metal. - Metal_Treasure
Viking metal was created by Bathory and it is a sub genre of black metal
Oh for gods sake, this probably doesn't deserve a place in the top five, but 35th place is just ridiculous.
They should make an Elder Scrolls metal subgenre.V 3 Comments
It seems like more punk/hard rock mixed with funk music more than metal. - zxm
Ok, this is legit. Infectious Grooves, Mordred, Living Colour and the like were good, but it was a fad.
Autopsy, Katatonia, Disembowelment, and My Dying Bride are awesome - ryanrimmel
Doom:VS is a good band. - Metalhead1997
The name "post Metal" sucks. It gives the impression that Metal is dead.
There are great "post Metal" bands. Check out Neurosis, cult of Luna, Isis, the ocean, Rosetta, and pelican, - ryanrimmel
Curious genre. Protest The Hero, Asking Alexandria and the like are interesting. I don't know even what it stands for. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe it's not. I guess if you don't like post-metal then post it to your worst enemy.
Neurosis is good.
Ryanrimmel: You said it all.
Definitely not my favourite, but I voted because it should at least be in the top 10. There are many great grindcore bands out there! Carcass (Pioneers of the once good but not so much anymore goregrind), Assuck, Cattle Decapitation, Terrorizer, Nasum and my personal favourite Napalm Death! - Oliwally
Probably the best "core" genre ever. Not a brilliant genre by any stretch but waaay better then metalcore and that outright abomination know as deathcore.
Cattle Decapitation and Ring of Saturn. Enough said.
Suicide Silence not so much.
This is the worst thing everV 3 Comments
These bands are great! But New Wave Thrash Metal is not a subgenre. It is all Thrash metal. - ryanrimmel
This isn't that great. All these bands are just generic predictable clones of the 80's thrash bands that came before them.
It's The New Wave Of American Heavy Metal, with Pantera, Lamb of God etc. leading the charge. There is a whole movement underway, including Between the Buried and Me etc. It's actually a good time for metal fans again.
Not all of it is unoriginal. Just listen to bands like vektor.V 1 Comment
Oh, I could write a whole book's worth of good bands in this subgenre. This is my favorite metal subgenre by far.
I would just FLOOD this page with reasons why it's my favorite subgenre, but I won't for your sake and the site's. - Metalhead1997
Oh gimme a break. May as well say regular death metal bands aren't brutal. - IronSabbathPriest
Pretty good genre with bands like Suffocation and Dying Fetus. Sadly its also filled to the brim with all of those crappy generic slam bands for wiggers like Krannium, Cephalotripsy, Guttural Secrete, and many others. Worst of all though goes to Waking (or Wanking) the Cadaver though, no doubt.V 4 Comments
I think Avant-garde metal means same by this. - zxm
Ok, Between the Buried and Me are in a league of one. If someone can come up with something remotely close to these freaks I shall buy it. I'll be the first in line, but it better work this time.V 2 Comments
When most people think of rap metal, they think of Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park. Well those bands are horrible (LK was good back in the day, but they suck now). Listen to bands like RATM, and you'll grow to love rap metal.
This list is false. Thrash metal is not good at all. Rap metal should be in the top tens. People who listen to rap and metal music at the same time should listen to this type of metal subgenre.
This one is a brain-teaser. Voivod are up there, perhaps some A Perfect Circle (eMotive era APC), Tool (slightly). Perhaps, in time, metal will evolve itself out of existence? Perhaps all music will? The possibilities are endless. Salvador Dali and H.R.Giger rules!
This genre is by far my favorite. I love post arcturus, sigh, sleepy time gorilla museum, transcending bizarre, mr. bungle, dog fasion disco, blotted science, bucket head. So much creativity in all bands and there all so different from one another.
Behemoth is one of if not the greatest metal band of this generation. This is an amazing subgenre
Not a lot of great bands come from this genre, but those great ones include Behemoth, Goatwhore, Angelcorpse, Blasphemy, Akercocke - ryanrimmel
