Top 10 Video Game Controversies of 2021Well, another year is almost finished and it's mostly the same as last year. COVID-19 makes going outside a challenge, many of us are still out of work and yes; even more video game controversies. So let's take a look at some of the biggest blunders in video games of the past year.
This one has angered a lot of people. In fact, there were so many things wrong with it, Youtube channel gameranx released a video with 20 things wrong with the game. The major issues for the game were how character models weren't upscaled right, how the rain is so opaque it hinders your view, songs being omitted and a whole bunch of bugs and glitches that weren't in the originals. Adding fuel to the fire was how the original versions were removed from digital store fronts like Steam before the trilogy's rerelease. Thankfully, Rockstar saw how this was a major blunder and relisted the original trilogy on their own storefront.
The whole edition across various consoles was the huge controversy and a big mistake at that too. It's official, Rockstar has gone downhill.
While we finally have a GTA game on a Nintendo console, this surely isn't a good way to start.
Perhaps, GTA V or even IV would do even better, if well-executed.
EDIT: My ignorance, there WAS a GTA game on Nintendo DS.
A blatant cash grab that is not even as good as the original games. Pathetic.
If you still haven't gotten a hold of a PlayStation 5 console, I've got some bad news for you. Sony has scaled backed its production forecast so it's not going to be making as many consoles as everyone has hoped. Due to a shortage of the chips and other components needed to manufacture the systems, it had to cut its production by 1 million units. That might not be much, but there are millions of people in the world trying to get their hands on this system. So far, Sony is blaming the COVID-19 pandemic for the problems.
When Nintendo announced that they were going to released a revised version of the Switch, many fans were elated. But when the video for the OLED model was revealed, it turned to disappointment for a few. While the Switch OLED featured a wider, brighter screen and a better kickstand, there weren't really any other improvements. No 4K resolution on TVs, no improvements to the JoyCons, nothing. This made it a tough sell for those who already own a Switch or Switch Lite. It was like selling ice to eskimos.
When Nintendo finally announced the Expansion Pass option for Nintendo Switch Online, people were elated to learn that they could finally play Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games on the Switch. But soon afterwards, they announced the price and the video showcasing the Expansion Pass quickly became their most disliked video on their Youtube channel. If that wasn't bad enough, people who played these games noticed issues that weren't present in the originals. Ocarina of Time was the most notable example as the water was more opaque, there was input lag, lack of fog and button mapping. While this was present in a few games, Ocarina of Time seems to have suffered the worst.
This expansion pack is stupid. I can just emulate all those N64 games for free, so why make it a expansion pack, other than for more money
I don't see any problems
They don't have to put every little detail from the original game, so stop complaining
Avengers has been wrapped in controversy even before its launch; from Spider-Man being exclusive to PlayStation platforms to boring repetitive gameplay and tons of microtransaction, it hasn't done as well as Square Enix would've liked. However, they're putting the blame squarely on Crystal Dynamics because this was their first live-service video game. But most feel that the genre was the wrong fit for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Square Enix needs to own up to this failure if they want this IP to be profitable.
This should of been a single player, story driven game, not a live service game.
In the video game industry, it shouldn't matter what gender you are. As long as you're able to make some awesome games, you have a place in the industry. However, Bobby Kotick doesn't seem to agree with that statement. The current CEO of Activision Blizzard has known about the company's toxic work environment for years in regards to sexual harassment, sexual assault and gender discrimination and didn't lift a finger to fire those responsible. When the company's shareholders found out about this, they started making demands to the company's board of directors to have Kotick fired. I found out about this information from The Washington Post, which is one of the biggest news outlets in the world so you know that this is serious. Things got so bad that even Sony and Microsoft are giving the public their two cents on the matter. You're free to post comments on this entry as the story develops and hopefully will have a satisfying conclusion.
Unless things are changed at both Activision and Blizzard, I will never buy another one of their games. In fact, I wouldn't care if they died because they have zero IPs that I care about. Hell, even EA has more IPs that I care about like Halo and Mass Effect.
Edit: I take that back. I forgot they own Crash Bandicoot. Crap, I'm sad now.
Ever since its launch in 2006, the PlayStation Store has provided us with awesome games old and new. But in early 2021, Sony announced that it would discontinue support for older PlayStation systems, mainly the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and the PlayStation Vita. When it received major backlash over the decision, Sony decided to reverse it. At least for the PS3 and Vita. This is good because there are a number of excellent games that can only be bought over the PlayStation Store. But it's only a matter of time before Sony decides to go through with its decision to cut ties to its older platforms forever.
Well, Sony decided against that, so win for us?
While Resident Evil VIllage has some very memorable characters like Lady Dimitrescu and old favorite Chris Redfield, it also featured some awesome boss fights. One of the most notable is a late boss enemy known as Stern and it looks original. But if you saw Richard Raaphorst's 2013 movie Frankenstein's Army, you can see the similarities. It's unknown if this was purely coincidence or if the developers knowingly ripped off the design. But as of this writing, nothing's come of it. Although it's only a matter of time before Capcom's dragged to court.
Even ten years after its release, Skyrim is a game that players young and old keep coming back to. It's the kind of game that was able to provide 100s of hours of gameplay and many are wondering if the sequel will be able to live up to the lofty standards set by this game. While we know very little about the game, one of the more solid details is that it's planned to be exclusive to Xbox consoles and PC. This is quite upsetting for those who don't have either and prefer to stick with either their Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4 or 5.
2021 was a big year for The Legend of Zelda franchise because it was the year the franchise turned 35. Fans were hoping that Nintendo had something big planned for Hyrule's iconic Princess and her Knight Link but as it turns out, it wasn't the birthday bash fans were hoping for. They released a Switch version of Skyward Sword which fans took to because they had no choice and there's the Game and Watch version of Legend of Zelda which includes the 2 NES games and the original Link's Awakening in all its monochrome glory. But what fans really wanted to see was a Switch version of their favorite titles The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Let's hope Nintendo comes through next year.
Blizzard is probably now the most hated game company now (besides probably EA).
Well, FF7 remake has finally been ported to the PC via Epic and holy cow, it's expensive! I don't know about you U.S.A. folks but here in Canada, it costs a whopping $93.49. And when you're expected to pay that much, you have the right to expect the best product possible. Well, from what I've heard, it's not. It lacks many graphics options and the framerate dips from time to time among other things. It's best to wait until this goes on sale if you want to buy it.
