Greatest Bands from the '80s

The Contenders: Page 5XW

81The Pretenders

Chrissy Hynde is one of the finest songwriters EVER... Also vocalists! Her bands were always honest players who helped to her songs the "edge" they deserved! Learning to Crawl is one of the finest albums ever released! She never released anything but great albums!

My God people if the Pretender's are not here I don't know what to say.

82Sonic YouthSonic Youth was an American rock band from New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and Lee Ranaldo remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, and rounded out the core line-up.

This is one of the main influences for bands like Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine

Why isn't Sonic Youth in the top ten, what the hell?

83RoxetteRoxette is a Swedish pop rock duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson (vocals) and Per Gessle (vocals and guitar). Roxette went on to achieve four US number-one hits with "The Look," "Listen to Your Heart," "It Must Have Been Love," and "Joyride", and nineteen UK Top 40 hits. Other hits include "Dangerous," more.

Should have been higher... this band deserves it! Per and Marie combo is just mind blowing... the powerful 'listen to your heart' and the catchy 'the look' prove why they should deserve higher ranks!

Great band. Literally. Original and dynamic songs

Great Band, Glad to see them back after 20 year on the road again.

What is wrong with people seriously great band

84Simple MindsSimple Minds are a Scottish rock band formed in 1977. They achieved commercial success in the 1980s and, despite various personnel changes, continue to record and tour.

Most underrated band... It deserves a lot more

The band who's song was the theme tune to The Breakfast Club 'don't you forget about me' another Great Scottish band along with Big Country

Can't believe how low in the rankings they are.
One of the most creative and innovative bands of their generation.

Mind blowing listen before you play any competitive sport

85The Sisters of Mercy

This is the band that brought me into new wave. Should be at least 50!

Should be higher. Temple of Love is the best they have done and can ans will hold the test of time.

86Talk Talk

Talk Talk invented whole genres of music. They evolved from synth pop to something profoundly sophisticated and inspiring. Their last three proper studio albums are greater than most of the top releases by many of the bands on here. Spirit of Eden is transcendent. Colour of Spring raised the bar beyond most band's grasp. Portishead, Sigur Ros, Massive Attack, Underworld, Radiohead, Robert Plant, members of Pink Floyd - all bow down to Talk Talk for a reason.

Pop as art. From their commercial early releases to their more introspective records, a band that did influence generations to come.

Define all that is great about 80s music.

Music for "gourmets"

The band got into mainstream after improving after their debut album got negative feedback . In 1978, more.

The masters of heavy metal music. These guys are icons today. It's easy to guess they should be number 1.

What these guys should be at the least in th top 10

89Spandau Ballet

Spandau should be top 5 probably top 3. If it goes by hits and ability to fill out stadiums they are most definitely up there.

"This is tony, hi I'm join, I'm Steve, I'm martin, and I'm Gary and we're Spandau Ballet."

Unbelievable they should be top 5. If it goes n top 30 hits they could be top 3.

The best band. They're simply AMAZING!

90Black FlagBlack Flag was an American punk rock band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California. Initially called Panic, the band was established by Greg Ginn, the guitarist, primary songwriter, and sole continuous member through multiple personnel changes in the band. They are widely considered to be one of more.
91RadioheadRadiohead are an English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Colin Greenwoood (bass guitar), Phil Selway (drums), and Ed O'Brien (guitar).

Radiohead banded together (officially) in the early 1990s, they are my fave band but should not be on the list at least under this name

Radiohead is a great band! CREEP is the best song ever... Radiohead should be upper on the list

Video killed the Radio Star...So true!

92The Alarm

One of my favorites. Some my other favorites include Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Stone Temple Pilots, The Clash, Foo Fighters and The Hives.

As someone who was born in 1970 I had fonder memories of the creche than the Clash. The alarm came along and changed that, a great band that got me into many others

One of the biggest college bands in the 80s. Never got the full recognition they deserved. Check out their greatest hits. Amazing songs. A ton of them.

The music and lyrics of Absolute Reality transcends generations. And for this song alone, The Alarm deserves a respectable place in this list.

93Level 42

Numerous hits on both sides of the Atlantic and still awesome!

One of the most underrated bands of all time.

It's been 30 years since I first heard "Something About You" and I still like listening to it up to this day!

Overlooked in this list of Great and Good Bands of the 80's

95White Lion

So underrated - front man Mike Tramp is a talented songwriter and vocalist, as well as being a great guy, and continues to release a wealth of quality music. Uplifting, melodic and finely crafted.

96Electric Light Orchestra The Electric Light Orchestra are an English rock band from Birmingham. They were formed in 1970 by songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne with drummer Bev Bevan.

Oh really, classically trained musicians creating innovative rock 'n roll wind up at #217!? I suggest you review their body of work and then Roll Over Beethoven.

Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. If this was a 70s list, ELO would be much higher.

The most underrated band... Thank you Jeff Lynne

To be fair, ELO is a 70's band, why is it here?

They're biggest international hit "Xanadu" was released and in 1980 and they were successful until 1982 - jrodz

97ZZ TopZZ Top is an American rock band that formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band is composed of bassist and lead vocalist Dusty Hill, guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, and drummer Frank Beard.

One of the greatest bands of all time! Show me any other band on this list that headlined to represent the United States at the Olympics.

Did not make the top 100? Who made this list? Were you born yesterday?

98SurvivorSurvivor is an American rock band formed in Chicago in 1978 by Jim Peterik. The band achieved its greatest success in the 1980s, garnering many charting singles, especially in the United States.

Come on eye of the tiger burning heart they should be top ten

Still blasting this out. Fab band

I don't get how this band is NUMBER 234

99RattRatt is an American heavy metal band that had significant commercial success in the 1980s, with their albums having been certified as gold, platinum, and multi-platinum by the RIAA.

Don't have a bad song toured the world and still playing. Should at least be in the top 15 top bands of the 80s. I guess more pop fans voting than rock.

Good lyrics, great sound, and an all around super band!

Should at least be in the top 20. One of the top headliner bands in the 80s

Best rock band of the 80's. I still listen to all their music even today!

My generation would agree Styx is among the best in their era. Dennis De Young and Tommy Shaw are great musician. Their songs are meaningful. Styx must be among the top ten

Why is this below skid Row?! Sure Youth gone Wild was good, but Styx released tons of hits!

Totally one of the best. Both Styx and Foreigner had a ton of hits... this list is way of base.

For pure rock and roll: ACDC, Foreigner, Styx, Scorpions, Van Halen, etc should be way closer to the top 20 than down near the bottom... who the hell is AlphaVille?

Great song and one of the best live shows around. Saw them in early 80's and again 2015 - even better. Should be in 10 top
