Great film. Well directed, written and Hanks gives one of his best performances. He is especially impressive considering how due to the film's structure, it would have not worked nearly as well had a bad actor played the lead. Hanks however keeps you utterly engrossed throughout what is essentially a one man show for a lot of the film, and even makes you care for his relationship between him and a volleyball for crying out loud! He deserved a third Oscar for the role, but instead lost to Russell Crowe in paycheck mode. Go figure.
