Best Singers of All Time

The Contenders: Page 7XW

121Jessie JJessica Ellen Cornish, better known by her stage name Jessie J, is an English singer and songwriter. Born and raised in London, she began her career on stage, aged 11, with a role in the West End musical Whistle Down the Wind.

Has a beautiful tone of voice, as well as an amazing control and technique. Above all she has, in my opinion, one of the best emotional connection to the song; when she sings you can feel her soul pour out. She as well has a marvelous stage presence. Although she does have her fun and playful songs like Bang Bang(which I don't have anything against), she also has deeply emotional songs with beautiful messages like Stand Up or even Price Tag. Yet through all her success she manages to remain humble and down to earth.

There are a lot of people missing from this list. I think Jessie J is one of the biggest ones. She has such amazing control of her voice. It's crazy.

WHY? Of all time? Jessie J should AT LEAST be in the top 200. She may have only released 1 album, but that was one of the BEST albums of 2011. She has a wide range of music styles from pop to urban to a bit of reggae. AMAZING and UNIQUE voice live and in my opinion the BEST British female singer since Amy Winehouse.

Ohh no. Her songs are not cool

122Ian GillanIan Gillan is an English singer and songwriter. He originally found success as the lead singer and lyricist for Deep Purple, and the original singer on the rock opera concept album Jesus Christ Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber, where Gillan had the leading role (Jesus Christ).

Going solo seems to be a labor of love more often than not, and it's an opportunity for an artist (frontman or otherwise) to delve into unexpected genres or styles. Deep Purple's Ian Gillan is no stranger to the solo project, with many of his personal endeavors of the past 20 years taking a more watered-down approach to the Deep Purple tradition. Gillan's latest album One Eye To Morocco, shows that the singer is perfect & might be returning to form. Gillan is still a capable vocalist, but the edge that was present in songs like Highway Star is gone at this point. At the age 60+, this shouldn't be a huge shocker and edginess probably wasn't the singer's intention anyhow. For me, he is the No. 1!

why did I have to scroll so far down, I mean he's not even on the first page!
i was gonna vote for Robert Plant or Freddy Mercury, but seeing Ian so low on the list ill just vote for him

come on, no one can sing Child In Time exept for Gillan
he's also one of the best live singers

he also performed the role of Jesus in the original Jesus Christ super star btw

The number of singers that had the chops of Ian Gillian in the early 70's are very few in numbers. Showboating a powerful, masculine voice Ian also had screaming high notes, the likes of which had never been heard before. While the few other male singers that could hit high notes sang like girls (i.e. Robert Plant) Ian had a strong hold over the low notes as much as the high notes and he delivered them both with machismo. - GuitarZero

One of my most favorite rock singers should easily be in the top 50s. Deep Purple is very underrated and so is Ian Gillian as a lead singer. He also had the lead role as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. - LightningBlade

123Nat King ColeNathaniel Adams Coles, known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American singer who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist.

There's lots of singers on this list whose music I prefer over Nat King Cole's but that wasn't the question, now was it? Yes, he should be number 1 or at least very close to it!

Trying to claim anyone as "the greatest singer of all time" is extremely arrogant--I'm voting for Nat not as the greatest singer (how could anyone ever presume to know that? ), but because he is certainly much better than everyone listed above him.

Nat King Cole has the most beautifully opened tone EVER! He is, of course, pre-rock... Nat, Ella, Billie, Nancy, Sarah, Frank, Vic, Bing and Pops are on a planet of their own... Only Lennon and McCartney has the jet fuel to get THERE! Miles, Benny, Duke, Glen, Brubeck, George, Ira and Cole dwell there TOO! - frank

The Christmas Song is one of my favorite Christmas songs - Ajkloth

124David Lee RothDavid Lee Roth is an American rock vocalist, songwriter, actor, author, and former radio personality.

David Lee Roth sang with such spirit, and such personality, but GOOD personality, not like the vulgar, Michael Jackson. Roth should be #1 you guys! - jhismyname

He was a great singer with a great solo career nut his voice isn't what it used to be.

Roth is by far the most expressive and excitable man here... Michael jackson isn't half as good as roth!

Why is he so low?

125Anthony KiedisAnthony Kiedis is an American singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist of the band Red Hot Chili Peppers, which he has fronted since its inception in 1983.

A! red hot chilli peppers is the best! I was at their concert last month and it was awesome! ALL YOU Bieber FANS AND Bieber GO TO HELL!

He's great I can't believe he's in the 60's TOP 10 BABY! I love his songs like dosed and under the bridge and don't even get me started on scar tissue. This guy is a singing god and deserves to be past all those random singers I've never heard of!

Just to say something to what the last person said; Anthony is not the only original member Flea is too.

Even though I'm a huge fan of his and the band, I will admit he was not the best singer when the Peppers started out, but he has evolved and he is amazing. He also performs like no one on stage, with the movements and dancing.Plus he exerts so much energy and passion when he sings.

Haven't heard anything quite like Kiedis. This guy's just incredible.

Ruki is awesome, he can sing any kind of music, he can transform his voice from distortion to clean, just like changing guitar effect.. Awesome

127Benjamin BurnleyBenjamin Jackson Burnley IV is an American musician, composer, and producer, best known as the founder and frontman of the American rock band Breaking Benjamin.

Can't beat him. No one knows him so therefore he's this far down on the list. Don't let metal suffocate in pop and hip-hop, and look up Breaking Benjamin in your spare time. - Giusti97

In my mind, Ben one of my favorite male singers, along with Roy Khan. Both are fantastic singers, with powerful, beautiful voices. It doesn't hurt that they both sing with phenomenal bands, and some of the best songs I've ever heard. (For the record, Breaking Benjamin is my favorite band, and Simone Simmons is my favorite singer of all time -- I don't see her on this list, though).

Hands down, my personal favorite of this list so far. I've gone out of my way to be a die-hard breaking benjamin fan. His songs are just epic. My favorite heavy songs are "I Will Not Bow" and "Had Enough", while Burnley is able to slow things down with "Forget It" and "Rain". He is incredibly, ridiculously underrated and tied for my fave singer of all time with Shaun Morgan.

Bens just awesome

129Chris Martin

Seriously? 112?

Chris Martin has such a special and beautiful voice! Why is he not in the top 20?

Coldplay is an amazing band with Chris Martin as an amazing Lead Singer! I just can't understand why people like Nicki Minaj are higher than Chris...

But it's the same with the modern music today... This anaconda is played on the radio...What happened with our world?

Okay, there are also really good songs in the charts and on the radio like The Script or Coldplay songs and I accept every person who has an other taste of music but you can't call Anaconda music!

So what I want to say is that I'm really sad that Chris Martin is so low on this list and that I can't understand why other crap singers are higher than him and by the way...Where is Danny O'Donoghue?

Chris Martin's voice is got to be the best voice I've ever heard in my entire life. He and Coldplay make the world go round with their touching and sensational songs they've written... GO COLDPLAY! - jprg12

Chris Brown before Chris Martin? He should be ranked a lot higher than that. Chris Martin can sing high, medium or low. He has got to be one of the best I have ever heard. He is so inspiring.. - Elaine22

People here are insane. If Taylor Swift is higher than Billy Joel... Just what. This guy deserves at least the top 100. He and his band made awesome music. - okcnaline

His voice is amazing. A very unique voice. I love his voice in Parachutes cause it had some sensibility and emotion.

Being the bass player/co-vocalist of blink-182 and now +44 he has bought a nice reputation for himself. A decent bass player but unbelivable singer. Goes for clean, pure low notes (listen to Little Death by +44) to mind-boggling highs (listen to Chapter 13 by +44) He a singer any band would want.

You'll know Mark Hoppus as the the singer of his primary band blink-182 and his side project 44. He has got lower baritone voice and a great vocal range, especially if you listen to 44, which is his best work to date. He plays bass too, and occasionally guitar. He is also pretty decent live.

a total legend on the bass and can sing well to you don't realise how hard it is untill you sing some of their songs

I went thru top 10 and I'm like. How isn't he here. But NO... He"s 229. You guys should check out back in black, thunderstruck, and TNT. The are all awesome

Who else has the devotion to sound like that. To sing as he does one must, gargle nails, chain smoke, drink gasoline, attach a clamp to their balls or breasts, drink molten metal, drink acid, etc.

He's so underrated. I mean, shouldn't he honestly be in the top 50s at least? He can sing like he's got nails in his mouth when he hasn't any. Listen to Back in Black. Listen to Thunderstruck if you haven't. You'll understand. His singing may not be melodious. But melodious isn't really proportional to better singer, so he should be appreciated. - LightningBlade

132Tim McIlrathTimothy James "Tim" McIlrath is an American punk rock musician. He is the lead singer, rhythm guitarist, songwriter and co-founder of the American punk rock band Rise Against.

Rumour states that Tim McIlrath is the God of Punk Rock
Hey say his vocal chords themselves are made of lightning and imbued with the power to change the world when combined with his breath-taking, emotive and eternally significant lyrics.

Tim's mighty scream is a force to be reckoned with due to it's incredible ability to cast waves of fury upon those who don't care for the world we live in and support war or violence in any form. However, it also has an, arguably, more important element embedded within; the power to save lives.

I don't know why this guy is down here...
really? justin bieber? britney spears?
better than this guy?
what the hell do people nowadays are listening to?
and where the hell is dave grohl?
- myself123

I love how people vote singers who sound nothing like they do on albums when singing live. Tim sounds almost exactly the same, except for maybe a few adjustments on albums to make Rise Against songs sound perfect. Either way, needs to be much farther up on the list.

If people were not afraid to dive deeper into today's music scene than they'd find Rise Against and see how fantastic of a singer this guy is. Today's pop and rap artists are certainly not better or anywhere near as good as Tim is.

lol... this list is a joke! Karen Carpenter at #58?

My favorite vocalist, by far, is Karen Carpenter. Her voice has an inherent melancholy quality which makes it perfect for the Carpenters' many melancholy and sad songs. She had such a vulnerability in her voice that it makes me want to give her a comforting hug.

Nowhere will you find a voice as smooth and silky as hers. Some people say Barbra Streisand's voice is "like butter. " I believe that distinction belongs to Karen.

But Karen's voice possesses so many qualities and facets that I love. It is soothing and sweet, loving. And sometimes when she hits those super-low notes, it sends a chill up my spine to this day.

And sometimes when she is singing tenderly, her voice crackles, and again, you hear that vulnerability.

Some other adjectives I can use to describe her voice are warm, sincere, touching, loving, and soothing. It wraps you up like a fluffy blanket on a cold day. The emotion ...more - jonk0469

Karen had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard in my life time. Perfect pitch awesome vibrato and just sang effortless. She made you listen to the words with perfect phrasing and timming. Karen was not a belter and when you added a mic to that voice out came this flawless instrument, she knew her talent. No one can come close to that god given voice. Karen never made a mistake and it has been said she was incapable of singing off key. Amazing singer.

Love the simplicity of her songs and serenity of her voice

135Rod StewartRoderick David "Rod" Stewart is a British rock singer-songwriter. Born and raised in London, he is of Scottish and English ancestry.

One of the most truly amazing and inspiring singer/writers ever, the most entertaining act you can witness today, and one who has changed and made possible many other performers. So varied and so good at everything he does, and keeping it that way throughout one of the best careers in the business. He is the ultimate rock and roll (not forgetting the many other styles he's mastered) legend.

His song, Forever Young, saved my life.

God blessed this man with talent then Rod shared it with the world. Thank you both.

I don't know why people don't like his voice but his voice seems to be nice to me - zxm

If I'm not hallucinating I think he's below Justin Bieber. Why is he so low down here? He's the best singer ever!

Why on earth is he all the way down at 159? His music is awesome!

There's a lot of people who should be higher than Justin Bieber. WAY higher.

His voice is one of the best for rock music. He's a good lead vocalist. - LightningBlade

138Maynard James KeenanMaynard James Keenan, often referred to by his initials MJK, is an American musician, record producer, winemaker, and actor, best known as the vocalist for Grammy Award-winning progressive metal band Tool.

If you Listen to Tool & A Perfect Circle and read the lyrics and all you who are voting for others will realize that Maynard James Keenan has most likely made the greatest vocal contribution to the world's music library of all singers so far. His vocal range is vast, from soft light and sensitive to heavy all consuming passion. Delivering the sacred words of life through intelligent & thought provoking lyrics. There is always an undeniable wisdom & subtlety in the lyrics & their delivery.
The instrumentation is always very unique. The Rhythms are very pure & polished and resonate perfectly with the emotion of the songs.
There is always an underlying Intelligence in the songs that reveals itself as the song progresses. With sensitivity, Maynard sings in ways that are therapeutic to the soul. Tribal and primal. Something very special for mankind.

I hate sounding like a Tool fanboy, but the fact that Maynard is even on the same list as folks like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, let alone below them, is a symptom of what is wrong with modern culture. This guy is seriously talented and his ability to drag you through emotions with his style is pretty amazing.

Never got that feeling listening to "Toxic".

This list is a joke. There's no reason for Maynard to be any lower than the top 5. I don't even see Geoff Tate on the list. This is just ridiculous. Sure MJ had a great voice, but Elton John's was used more dynamically. Sure, some 80's rock singers had great ranges, but Maynard's is just as good if not better than most... Not only that, but he can use that range softly, loudly, and passionately.

I think I saw Chester Bennington up there. Are you guys serious? You think he can scream? Listen to Ticks and Leaches, Eulogy, and Grudge? He's got power and length and can easily transition into the softest voice in rock in an instant. This list is a Joke.

Top 50 or better.

Unlike most of these haters, I'm personally here to say she's actually very talented. My sister who listens to very talented singers like Adele and Kelly Clarkson even confirmed that Nicki Minaj is good, which is saying a lot. The only reason you people are hating on her is because of her songs "Stupid Hoe" and "Anaconda". Have you even seen her perform her song "Grand Piano" live? Have you also seen her do an acapella rap of her "Flawless" verse? She literally knows how to slay. Stop listening to those songs and listen to the good ones like the one I mentioned.

This has to be a joke, have brains you dumb imbeciles who are obsessed with 2 things: butts and nudity.

Okay, I think this list just threw in random people now as it ran out of ideas

I think she is queen.
