The Contenders: Page 2

21 Alternative Metal Alternative Metal Alternative metal is a music genre that infuses heavy metal with influences from alternative rock and other genres not normally associated with metal.

Think System of a Down, Tool or early Linkin Park. An upgraded version of nĂ¼-metal with more complex guitar riffs and different lyrical themes. (e. G, System of a Down's political lyric themes)

Linkin Park, system of a down, stone sour, breaking benjamin, three days grace, its all alternative metal

More lyrical version of metal. Bands like Seether, Breaking Benjaming, Three Days Grace, Evanescence fall under this category.

System Of A Down,Linkin park,Breaking Benjamin,Staind,Three Days Grace and of course DISTURBED made me love metal music..

22 Nu Metal

I'm actually really surprised to see it so high on the list! This is my favorite genre, and honestly I was afraid to even say I liked nu metal, because I would get pounded into the ground by other metal fans, but really the only people that hate this genre are the brain dead metal fans that hate everything except what they like. Thanks for voting up, even though you don't know me I'm happy to see this genre is getting some positive feedback. Korn, slipknot, system of the down, and linkin park (not really sure if they still make nu metal) for the win!

Nu Metal is great because all the aspects combined make it melodic. Majority of nu metal songs have deep meaning, and most of the bands make their music for good reasons. - lukestheman4

Have you ever listen korn, slipknot, Linkin Park, limp bizkit or mushroomhead? You will be surprised because of basses, drums and DJ... And more

My favorite as well

23 Country

Easily the best music genre ever. Always has been, always will be! Sadly, it's also the most underrated music genre ever. I can't believe it's lower than garbage like hip hop, metalcore, rap, and electronic! Seriously people?! Country music is not a bunch of drunk cowboys crying because their cow died, or their pick up truck broke down! It's not all about beer and tractors! It's about LIFE! It's about family, faith, friendship, love, hope, God, being proud of where you come from even when people discriminate against you for it, learning valuable life lessons, being a better person, having fun, pursuing happiness, and other things that everyone cares about! There are also some really funny country songs out there! Sure, there are sad country songs, but they're sad because they mean something. They're sad because they're realistic. Country music is amazing because it sounds good, the lyrics actually have depth and meaning and everyone can relate to them, and country singers can actually ...more

Ok Country is definitely one of the best genres out there, if not the best. It's this genre that early American society was first based off of, and Country can be played anywhere, be it with just one acoustic guitar, or a full band. While it's true that country has evolved to more of a poppish tone, all music is evolving. Now pop music, mixed in with country, isn't just about love, having fun, but it actually has some real messages mixed in. A great example of modern country Is Rascal Flatts: listen to their songs Bless the Broken Road, My Wish, Changed. Etc, and tell me those are not incredible songs. Country is the best genre ever, no doubt

What? Early American society? Do you know how old country is? I think you mean folk and the blues, but that it still way younger than America. - MrWizard1234

Country music is basically the root of all other modern music genres, just look at Elvis he was country singer and he also basically invented rock and roll and blues. Country is also the longest lasting genre, gaining popularity around the early 1900's. Since country has been around for awhile a lot of changes have been made mostly for the worst it is all about drinking beer and saying how "country" they are but the genre lost what made it special, the ability to convey emotion in the lyric. Other things that made it great are also gone like telling a heart felt story, actually teaching you a lesson, and telling the struggles of day to day life. In conclusion modern country is crap, and older country, in my opinion, is the best genre.P. S this is for classic country not modern.

Everyone else is just plain stupid

24 Funk Funk

Why isn't this in the top 10? Listen to bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and you'll get my drift.

Red hots are not funk band. Red Hot Chili Peppers is funk rock band.

Peppers represent this genre and they are the greatest band of all time. Funk is the best man!

Best genre ever, I can't interact with anyone who disagrees

25 Progressive Metal

By far the best genre. Bands like Tool, Dream Theater, Opeth, Symphony X, Prototype and Agalloch are some of the most talented bands ever. Hands down.

Prog is the best! Tool is the best and Dream Theater is second. (For prog metal)

My top bands:

1. Tool
2. System of a Down
3. Dream Theater

#3 and #2 can switch around. - moose4life19

System of a Down is a good band, but it's not progressive metal. It is alternative and nu metal. - Powerfultekin

By far, requires the most talent to play. People who listen to prog metal and prog rock are usually musicians and/or intelligent people.

Just listen to bands such as Tool, Dream Theater, Opeth, Meshuggah, and Symphony X. I also heard Rush would be considered Progressive Metal as it has taken some of those elements of heavy metal, and King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man was also considered one of the earliest metal songs, and probably the first Progressive Metal song. - DarkenedBrutality

26 Folk

Just listen to Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell. People like that.

They sing about things that are tried and true. There's no DJ that works with Folk music to get it right. It's the raw human voice and spirit.

Guys are you serious? Ever played/watched the game "Life is Strange"? The main theme Syd Matters- To All of You and Obstacles is so good. It feels like your at peace with yourself, just like a slice of heaven.

FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS CATEGORY AND IT ENDS UP BEING 42ND? ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS? WHERE ARE ALL THE SCREAMING FANS STANDING UP FOR THEY'RE FAVE GENRE?

Anyway...

I love Folk music, it's a mix of diff categories and can be rock, sad, really, anything. Folk is like a more soothing version of pop in my opinion. Of Monsters And Men is my fave Folk band. Check them out!

It doesn't matter if you are talking about old folk or new folk; all of it is amazing!

27 Disco

Nothing makes me groove like those funky tunes.

It left its mark on American society. Nothing can match the distinct funky soul inspired sound

An amazing genre full of extraordinary voices and instrumental talent, including many classical elements.

Everybody likes disco music!

28 Blues Rock Blues Rock

Fake n gay, deadmau5 is better - akyreaper

Blues Rock. No 115?! Are you KIDDING me? Bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Deep Purple (my top 3 bands ever) all adopted a bluesy rock sound. It was mostly hard rock, but they had blues thrown in there. A few examples-

Led Zeppelin:
When the Levee Breaks

AC/DC:
Down Payment Blues
You Shook Me All Night Long
Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution

Deep Purple:
Lazy (AMAZING underrated song)

Blues Rock comes in second to hard rock. No. 115...

29 Alternative Rock Alternative Rock

Two words: Smashing Pumpkins

Why isn't this higher

This is the best! Imagine Dragons play Alt. Rock! - Jackal2272

YEAH ALT ROCK

30 Death Metal

Like Metal but with more anger and power

They are speechless... Wonderful. Most beautiful part is that their Voice is in anger and powerful voice, Wonderful voice. Everyone should hear of this type of song. They will inspired you, just like they inspired by me. They have unique talent.

The only music that parallels the complexity, technicality and emotion of classical music. It's the hardest genre to play on Earth, besides classical.

Death metal is just amazing! - Oliwally

31 Melodic Death Metal

I'm happy to see so many rock&metal-genres here at the top! :D
I have no clear favourite... Hard or punk rock? Power, heavy or melodic metal? Nu metal or metalcore? Or maybe grunge? Maybe alternative rock? No clue :P
But hey, just voted in honor of one of my favourite bands:
In Flames! M/ - Flav

Five years ago, I used to listen to meaningless idiotic songs on the radio.

But, then I discovered rock/metal music and its countless sub genres.

I never thought death metal song will ever make me cry. After listening to "Lethe" by Dark Tranquillity, I cried out loud and this song relieved me from some of my pain.

I have been a big fan of Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth and Children of Bodom.

Lethe is in my opinion the best song ever made, made me tear up too - Tylerlangford1234

Embrace of the Endless Ocean by Amon Amarth got me hooked on Melodic Death Metal. The music has the intensity of Death Metal, but the melody expresses more emotion and atmosphere.

Carcass, Children of bodom, Amon amarth, Arch enemy, At the gates, The black dahlia murder, In flames and many more.
Absolutely beautiful, complex and powerful music.

32 Groove Metal

Aggressive style of music. Like Nu-Metal, but adds more of what Metal really is, while removing what make Nu-Metal unpopular. Think of bands like Pantera and Sepultura, for example.

Groove metal is pretty good. Unfortunately, it also inspired that cancer most of us know as nu-metal.

I love groove metal, especially pantera and machine head

I thought Anthrax inspired nu metal

33 Power Metal

Fast paced instrumentals and intricate playing put the power into power metal. The sheer skill possessed by bands like Blind Guardian and Sonata Arctica, symphonic intricacies of bands like Rhapsody, and catchy melodies of bands like Sabaton and Stratovarius exemplify the diversity of power metal's reaches. Sub genres like pirate and viking metal also manifest power metal influences. Fantasy tinged lyrics and synth provide a distinct flavor to many bands, while others use more traditional, yet dramatized lyrics. By far one of the most skill-intensive genres one could listen to, and appealing to a wide variety of people.

An EPIC version of Heavy Metal Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, Helloween and much MUCH MORE!

Power is one of the most melodic metal I ever heard, so much that's in the atmosphere, the harmony changes, epic solos, it's a ballad in the metal sub-genre, its possibly the best music piece I ever heard, revitalising classicals, opera, 80s AOR, and Orchestral strings all done on keyboard

Not my favorite genre, but I do like Dream Evil. - DarkenedBrutality

34 Rap Rock

How is rock rap so low on the list don't forget about bands such as the Red Hot Chile peppers and Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park skillet three days grace breaking benjamin and many more

Rap rock should be ahead of classical. We got, linking park, Hollywood undead, skillet, breaking benjamin. With out rap rock we wouldn't be able to express ourselves and the bands struggled like us and help us move on.

Classical is the best kind of music out there, and rap rock deserves to be on #9 on this list - LargeDemon

It is a modern genre rap and rock listeners like Linkin Park is best for it

Basically another word for nu metal but it needs to be praised more

35 Art Rock

One particular band has turned me onto this expressive style of rock, and that band is Florence + the Machine. Her ethereal vocals and the incredible backing music was just so captivating to me, and her lyrics complement the style so perfectly. It's a very unique style and that's why I like Art Rock so much. - theOpinionatedOne

Art Rock acts include Roxy Music, David Bowie, Jethro Tull, Electric Light Orchestra, Moody Blues, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Procol Harum, Peter Gabriel... And still on 51?!
Come on people..

36 Metalcore

Maybe there are too much pop-emo-bands calling themselves metalcore, but the REAL metalcore like from As I Lay Dying or Parkway Drive is really really awesome! Very ambitious, diversified and melodic. love this genre!

Other memorable bands could be: August Burns Red, Unearth, Killswitch Engage, The Ghost Inside, The Agonist, The Devil Wears Prada - Flav

Older Bullet For My Valentine, As I Lay Dying, some Bring Me The Horizon, Asking Alexandria, older Avenged Sevenfold. - EvilAngel

Metal core is the best genre ever. It involves screaming, metal, and meanings. They have certain meanings and lessons

Wovenwar is amazing best metal core band

37 Metal

Metal is awesome better than hip hop

So good that it's on here twice!

Metal is the best music in this world believe it or not is the greatest

Without this, music would NEVER be the same.

38 Trance

Let me put it this way...

Armin van Buuren
Paul van dyk
Markus Schulz
ATB
Dash Berlin
Tiesto
Gareth Emery
Ferry Corsten
Above & Beyond
Cosmic Gate

...
No one will ever beat them

I think trance is definitely the best genre that isn't that mainstream, the other people would rate Heavy Metal as the best genre, but that is more mainstream than trance, trance hasn't been at it's been since the 90's though really. But it's always been my favourite and it brings back memories of the 90's. It sure is better than dubstep, which is rated higher, shows this list is biased to what we know and what we don't.

Its my favorite music type because of its power to embrace and relax you with joy I'd give this 5 stars out of 3

Many genres Including Pop, Rap, Some other Electronic music, etc are going downhill but 138 BPM trance keeps Improving every year, but it's way too underrated.

Unique atmosphere that twists and enriches your Perception... So it is for everyone

Black Metal ist Krieg!

Black metal for life.

Ahh, I grew up with this, mostly because my parents listened to it. And no, my parents aren't bad. they are very nice.

40 Emo

Modern emo is just teenagers whining about life and how their life sucks, promoting depression in teenagers. But when emo was made in the early 80's, it meant that the singer put so much emotion into a subject, the poetry was AMAZING. Then it was overtaken by depression when the scene came in 2004. Bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Rites of Spring, The get up Kids are all amazing emo bands. - Plonderss

How is this #240? This should at LEAST be in the top 20 with crap genres like electronic, and rap, pop above it. Emo bands, such as Rites of Spring, Taking Back Sunday, Moss Icon, Jawbreaker, they are all amazing, and talented. They spend hours writing lyrics that come straight from the heart. I see why this isn't #1 but it should be way higher. It's hard to put this punk influenced, highly cultured genre in a box, there are some alternative rock influenced bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate. Just get a band, show your emotions in emotionally abstract lyrics that haunt your mind and sooth your soul.

Emo is not just whiney no talent kids singing some sappy song about 1st world problems, emo stands for emotional, yes, it's emotional. Why is that a bad thing? Some one singing about what they feel after they loss someone, someone singing about battling depression, WHY IS THAT BAD? A lot of people can relate to it, people that can't relate or understand it are robots with no consideration for other people. I'm not even that big a fan of emo music, but it needs more credit! A lot of people just say emo is whiney, it's not. emo is emotional, emo is sad, emo is powerful. Just because a song is emo, doesn't mean it's a bad song. Listen to more emo music, then you will see.

Emo tells a lot more than partying, drugs, and much more. A lot of people think emo is just people saying how life sucks but it isn't. Most of the emo music isn't about that. - spodermanfan1000
