21 Reggae

Reggae in my opinion is the only music genre that goes beyond music. Not many other genres sway the minds of our youth, with its meaningful and inspiring lyrics. Most of reggae artist stay away from mainstream tendencies, with the soul purpose of changing the world for the better. With its funky, flowing sound we can only hope people will catch on to this music that is more then music.

I call reggae a beautiful badass; its got some much soul and flows like classical music but also rolls in heavy with a strong bass line. Its like the product of the best parts of every other genre. In my opinion.

I knew that rap will be in top ten. I knew that hard rock will be in top ten. I know that reggae should be in top ten. Reggae is very positive music and I think that people just want be sad, this is a reason why reggae isn't in top ten...

I love the positive messages in this music! I can't believe people consider this as underground music!

22 Soul Soul

Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Four Tops, Diana Ross, Commadores, Jackson 5, Soul Train. Without this their would be no rap or R&B.

This is a genre you really feel and has provided consistently great artists

I'm 13 years old, and this is my favourite genre. I really get invested in the beautiful music and meaningful lyrics.

Two words: Aretha Franklin. - MrWizard1234

23 Psychedelic Rock

Psychedelic rock. This is the best genre out there. It's not mainstream that's the problem. It was revolutionised by the 13th floor elevators in about 1965-1966 then became huge in 1967 what such bands as Pink Floyd bringing out piper at the gates of dawn, doors: the doors, Beatles sgt peppers lonely hearts club band and many more. Bands such as tame impala are bringing it back which is awesome and psychedelic was the roots of punk, pop rock and pop. Be grateful for it.

38 is way to low when we're talking about bands such as Floyd, Beatles, Doors and so many other of historys greatest bands, not to mention newcomers such as MGMT

I like most genres of music before 1995, and occasionally Id hear a new song which I like, but Psychedelic Rock is without a doubt the best genre. It combined all the great genres of its day like blues, folk, jazz, rock, classical, funk, Eastern music, etc. and added new elements that made your brain melt as you rode the psychedelic rollercoaster. Some of the greatest artists of all time explored psychedelia and opened our minds to the possibilities and complexities of music. Artists like the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Phish. it's a shame its not more well known, otherwise no one would listen to what people call music these days.

Just listen

24 Progressive Metal

By far the best genre. Bands like Tool, Dream Theater, Opeth, Symphony X, Prototype and Agalloch are some of the most talented bands ever. Hands down.

Prog is the best! Tool is the best and Dream Theater is second. (For prog metal)

My top bands:

1. Tool
2. System of a Down
3. Dream Theater

#3 and #2 can switch around. - moose4life19

System of a Down is a good band, but it's not progressive metal. It is alternative and nu metal. - Powerfultekin

By far, requires the most talent to play. People who listen to prog metal and prog rock are usually musicians and/or intelligent people.

Just listen to bands such as Tool, Dream Theater, Opeth, Meshuggah, and Symphony X. I also heard Rush would be considered Progressive Metal as it has taken some of those elements of heavy metal, and King Crimson's 21st Century Schizoid Man was also considered one of the earliest metal songs, and probably the first Progressive Metal song. - DarkenedBrutality

25 Folk

Just listen to Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell. People like that.

They sing about things that are tried and true. There's no DJ that works with Folk music to get it right. It's the raw human voice and spirit.

Guys are you serious? Ever played/watched the game "Life is Strange"? The main theme Syd Matters- To All of You and Obstacles is so good. It feels like your at peace with yourself, just like a slice of heaven.

FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK FOLK I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS CATEGORY AND IT ENDS UP BEING 42ND? ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS? WHERE ARE ALL THE SCREAMING FANS STANDING UP FOR THEY'RE FAVE GENRE?

Anyway...

I love Folk music, it's a mix of diff categories and can be rock, sad, really, anything. Folk is like a more soothing version of pop in my opinion. Of Monsters And Men is my fave Folk band. Check them out!

Come on! folk is much better than country! folk produced artists like bob dylan, simon & garfunkel, joni mitchell, etc, and it also fused with rock to create lots of great music! - RecklessGreed

26 Funk Funk

Why isn't this in the top 10? Listen to bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and you'll get my drift.

Red hots are not funk band. Red Hot Chili Peppers is funk rock band.

Peppers represent this genre and they are the greatest band of all time. Funk is the best man!

I am a huge fan of slap bass and tapping. And funk influenced slapping more than any other genre. - zxm

27 Melodic Death Metal

I'm happy to see so many rock&metal-genres here at the top! :D
I have no clear favourite... Hard or punk rock? Power, heavy or melodic metal? Nu metal or metalcore? Or maybe grunge? Maybe alternative rock? No clue :P
But hey, just voted in honor of one of my favourite bands:
In Flames! M/ - Flav

Five years ago, I used to listen to meaningless idiotic songs on the radio.

But, then I discovered rock/metal music and its countless sub genres.

I never thought death metal song will ever make me cry. After listening to "Lethe" by Dark Tranquillity, I cried out loud and this song relieved me from some of my pain.

I have been a big fan of Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth and Children of Bodom.

Embrace of the Endless Ocean by Amon Amarth got me hooked on Melodic Death Metal. The music has the intensity of Death Metal, but the melody expresses more emotion and atmosphere.

MDM deserves to be under top 10

28 Disco

Nothing makes me groove like those funky tunes.

It left its mark on American society. Nothing can match the distinct funky soul inspired sound

An amazing genre full of extraordinary voices and instrumental talent, including many classical elements.

Everybody likes disco music!

30 Metalcore

Maybe there are too much pop-emo-bands calling themselves metalcore, but the REAL metalcore like from As I Lay Dying or Parkway Drive is really really awesome! Very ambitious, diversified and melodic. love this genre!

Other memorable bands could be: August Burns Red, Unearth, Killswitch Engage, The Ghost Inside, The Agonist, The Devil Wears Prada - Flav

Older Bullet For My Valentine, As I Lay Dying, some Bring Me The Horizon, Asking Alexandria, older Avenged Sevenfold. - EvilAngel

Metal core is the best genre ever. It involves screaming, metal, and meanings. They have certain meanings and lessons

Killswitch Engage is widely considered metalcore. m/

31 Rap Rock

How is rock rap so low on the list don't forget about bands such as the Red Hot Chile peppers and Rage Against The Machine, Linkin Park skillet three days grace breaking benjamin and many more

Rap rock should be ahead of classical. We got, linking park, Hollywood undead, skillet, breaking benjamin. With out rap rock we wouldn't be able to express ourselves and the bands struggled like us and help us move on.

Classical is the best kind of music out there, and rap rock deserves to be on #9 on this list - LargeDemon

It is a modern genre rap and rock listeners like Linkin Park is best for it

Basically another word for nu metal but it needs to be praised more

32 Death Metal

Like Metal but with more anger and power

They are speechless... Wonderful. Most beautiful part is that their Voice is in anger and powerful voice, Wonderful voice. Everyone should hear of this type of song. They will inspired you, just like they inspired by me. They have unique talent.

The only music that parallels the complexity, technicality and emotion of classical music. It's the hardest genre to play on Earth, besides classical.

Death metal is just amazing! - Oliwally

33 Groove Metal

Aggressive style of music. Like Nu-Metal, but adds more of what Metal really is, while removing what make Nu-Metal unpopular. Think of bands like Pantera and Sepultura, for example.

Groove metal is pretty good. Unfortunately, it also inspired that cancer most of us know as nu-metal.

I love groove metal, especially pantera and machine head

I thought Anthrax inspired nu metal

34 Blues Rock Blues Rock

Blues Rock. No 115?! Are you KIDDING me? Bands like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Deep Purple (my top 3 bands ever) all adopted a bluesy rock sound. It was mostly hard rock, but they had blues thrown in there. A few examples-

Led Zeppelin:
When the Levee Breaks

AC/DC:
Down Payment Blues
You Shook Me All Night Long
Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution

Deep Purple:
Lazy (AMAZING underrated song)

Blues Rock comes in second to hard rock. No. 115...

36 New Wave

No... no way should New Wave be below half of this list. It's my personal favorite, and I think it's going to continue to age well.

The Police, The Clash, The Cars, Blondie, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Depeche Mode, The Go-Go's, Duran Duran, Talking Heads, Eurythmics, The B-52s, Thomas Dolby, The Art of Noise, ' DEVO! There is no argument I can see for putting, say, Death Metal and Drum and Bass above this. THe amount of exciting diversity of this genre and time period can hardly be overestimated.

Such underrated genius. Really what about Depeche Mode? Or A Flock of Seagulls, Synthesisers!? Only the 80s. Heavy Metal comes a close second- Random 10 year old (literally).

Its so groovy laugh out loud

Must be on the top, just listen to this genre

37 Indie Rock

This is a genre that doesn't go mainstream. It's a good thing considering that having mainstream music will make bands looks creative and intellectual control over their music, which is what hip-hop, pop, and modern rock is failing in a way. But with indie rock, it's finally a genre that opens doors to well written lyrics, great beats, creative sounds, innovative direction of music, and intelligence yet fun listening. Modern music fails to make anything forever memorable, but yet for indie, it always marks the spot as the best of all time when an indie rock albums is released.

The White Stripes, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Guided by Voices, Pavement, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, Neutral Milk Hotel, Liz Phair, and the rest are all worth your time.

How is this lower than pop? Pop sucks anyway

I am so glad I made it here. Pop and indie rock need to switch places...NOW. Anyway, indie rock is non mainstream, each band has a unique sound, and lyrics. Although Imagine Dragons are the most popular, let's not over look Arctic Monkeys, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, and many more. This genre takes a lot of talent because everything must be done by the band, not the record label. It is a lot better than these pop rock bands (although I like some pop rock bands such as The Fray, One Republic, etc)

38 Black Metal

Unique atmosphere that twists and enriches your Perception... So it is for everyone

Black Metal ist Krieg!

Black metal for life.

Ahh, I grew up with this, mostly because my parents listened to it. And no, my parents aren't bad. they are very nice.

39 Pop Punk

I feel like the name "pop punk" contradicts itself. Pop means popular, and its what the majority listens to. PUNK is this rebellious spirit that pees on the majority and rules. Pop punk is what teen girls listen to to make them feel like rebellious punks, despite actually being preppy. If you want to understand what I'm talking about listen to Sex Pistols or The Clash or Bad Religion

And here folks you have genre of overrated bands, including but not limited to the sub-par bands licensed to fueled by ramen.

What the hell did people ever here about a band called blink 182 there the best band I've ever heard this genre should be definitely in the top 5.

All time low

40 Dubstep

Everything before all that 2009 noise was great. Even though I like some of the new stuff these producers pull out, I think the early years of the genre were the best.

Go listen to Burial, Skream, Benga, whatever, and compare that to Skrillex. The difference is quite notable.

Get with the times, sure it may sound like a bunch of weird noises, but once you get a feel for dubstep it attaches to you like a limpet. People say it's not real music, but I think to be a dubstep artist you need to have some musical talent to string those sounds together and let it flow. So yeah, dubstep is a real form of music, and it's addictive!

Hear some of skrillex and agree with me - Mushroom99

Dubstep tells a story within the bass drops, techno-style notes and sometimes some lyrics. I like punk, metal, emo, rock etc, but all those tell a story with only lyrics, some songs even just tell a story that is so simple that it's like from a children's story book. If you listen to a song in dubstep, you will find that the song has no meaning. However, there is a meaning, but you need to find it out yourself. All dubstep songs can make you rave out and dance, and sometimes calm you down or make you feel better. Dubstep is the genre with the deepest meaning and it's the best raving music. Good job Skrillex.

Please keep your crazy-ass deepness to yourself. If you wanna go that far into it, just interpret Pink Floyd and Rush albums, or something. - MrWizard1234
