Jak II
Jak II is an action-adventure platformer developed by Naughty Dog and released for the PlayStation 2 in 2003. The game introduces an open-world environment set in the dystopian Haven City, where Jak gains new Dark Eco powers. The storyline takes a darker turn from the first game, with Jak seeking revenge against Baron Praxis after being imprisoned and experimented on for two years. Great characters, non-repetitive gameplay, a great story, and a good challenge. Definitely one of the best PS2 games out there.
It's awesome. The best story ever, great gameplay, tricky difficulty, and fantastic bosses.
This whole game is just waves and waves of difficulty spikes. I loved it.
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Released in 2001, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is the first game in the series, developed by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 2. It follows Jak and his friend Daxter as they explore mysterious islands and ancient ruins in an effort to undo Daxter's transformation into an ottsel. The game is known for its seamless open world and its emphasis on platforming mechanics and environmental exploration. In my opinion, one of the best platformers ever made. It's original, colorful, funny, and so much more. Jak II felt more like a Grand Theft Auto game - frustrating when you had to drive across the entire city just to start a mission.
I'm playing it right now. Currently 70% done, and it's one of my favorite games of all time. Pick it up if you have any extra cash lying around.
As a huge fan of platformers, I've always preferred the pure platforming and colorful fantasy world of the original over the shooting and sci-fi elements of its sequels. Jak II and Jak 3 are great games, but they were missing some of the magic of Jak and Daxter.
Jak 3
Jak 3, developed by Naughty Dog, launched in 2004 for the PlayStation 2 and continues the story from Jak II. The game sees Jak exiled to the Wasteland before eventually uncovering his connection to the Precursors and restoring peace to Haven City. It features a blend of platforming, vehicular combat, and new Light Eco powers for Jak to complement his Dark Eco abilities. Personally, I think Jak 3 is the best. Jak and Daxter was too short, and Jak II was too punishing. Jak 3 manages to expand and improve on Jak II's gameplay, and it lowered the difficulty, but not so much that it lost its challenge.
It feels like Jak II, but the added light eco powers and the wasteland setting bring in fun missions.
It was good, but too short and not as fun as the first two games.
Daxter
Daxter, released in 2006, is a spin-off developed by Ready at Dawn for the PlayStation Portable. The game takes place between the events of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Jak II, focusing on Daxter's solo journey to free Jak from prison. It emphasizes platforming and combat, as well as Daxter's unique bug-exterminating skills. This game is great for the PSP.
Jak X: Combat Racing
Released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, Jak X: Combat Racing is a vehicular combat game developed by Naughty Dog. The game is set after the events of Jak 3 and revolves around Jak and his friends being forced to compete in a dangerous racing tournament. It introduces various weapon-equipped vehicles and tracks, combining racing mechanics with action-based combat. It's my favorite racing game ever, but it isn't like the other Jak and Daxter games.
Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier
Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier was developed by High Impact Games and released in 2009 for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable. The game follows Jak and Daxter as they venture to the edge of the world to resolve an Eco shortage that threatens their universe. It introduces new aerial combat mechanics and expands the franchise's world-building and lore.
