Top 10 Lies Parents and Teachers Tell You

The Top Ten
Anything is possible if you try (you can be the next _____)

This is a huge lie that teachers tell because they have to. I mean, they can't just say, "Oh, you should give up because you're never going to be anything." You do have the opportunity to be many things, but maybe not anything.

Unfortunately, this is a big lie. Not everyone can be the president, and not everyone can be a police officer. Some people are born smaller and will never be a basketball player, no matter how good their 3-point shooting skills are.

I often try things a million times and still fail miserably.

Looks don't matter

Once again, this is false. Look at how many actors and actresses who can't even act but become rich and famous because of their "good looks." For example, Jessica Alba is considered to be good-looking, but she cannot act her way out of a cardboard box. Even if you are not up to the task, if you look the part, you may get the supervisor or front desk job that you really want. The better-looking you are in life, the easier things will be for you. The uglier you look, the harder you will have to work. Girls would prefer a handsome husband, and guys would prefer a beautiful wife.

Ignore the bullies because they will go nowhere in life

For some people, this may be true, but a person who is once a bully will always be a bully. Bullying isn't confined to a school area. There is a good chance someone higher up in a workplace will try to bully those below them. Look at the government - so many of those people were bullies when they were growing up, yet they still ended up with high-paying jobs. I never had a bully, but for those who do, remember that sometimes they follow you throughout life.

Just because someone was a bully as a kid doesn't mean they have no chance at a successful career. And ignoring bullies won't make them stop. You have to stand up to them.

Stay in school because school will lead to success

It is true that school will give you the much-needed education to survive in life, but you pretty much get all of that by high school. You don't need college to be successful - look at Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. College is good if you are going specifically for medical or HR purposes, but degrees like philosophy and liberal arts are completely useless.

I want to either be a YouTuber, singer, musician, or actress. How will school help with any of that?

Well, I wish I had graduated in Year 10 instead of Year 12 (I'm in Australia, by the way)!

Everyone is created equally

Some people are born better looking than others. Some will be naturally taller, while others are born deaf or blind.

Everyone is created equal if you were born into the right religion and race for your specific country. And if you're in a heavily religious area, it helps if you were born male, because religious people often don't consider women to be equal.

I have proof that's not true. My older sister and older brother have all the good qualities, and I got all the bad ones. My family mistreats me, and I seem to be bad at everything.

You should never talk back to your parents or teachers

You can say whatever you want to us. Why is it suddenly wrong when we do it to you?

Wrong. Sometimes you should stand your ground for what you believe in.

Video games cause mass shootings

This is an outright lie that the Christian Right tends to use to push for laws banning violent video games. If anything, these games prevent more real-life violence because a lot of people play video games like these to relieve stress or pent-up anger.

We treat all students equally

Teachers or parents will tell you this, but when it clashes with their personal views - especially if those views are bigoted or ignorant - they'll treat certain students terribly.

Our English teacher favors girls over boys (he's male). The girls can literally tease him, but if we boys say one word out of line, boom - he yells, Get out!

Africa is the only continent where "kids are starving"

The old saying that if you don't eat your food a kid in Africa will starve is misleading. Every country has children that are starving. Africa is not the only continent with a starving population. It is not just desert and lions - Africa is a continent with cities as well. Not everybody is poor in Africa, just like not everybody is rich in North America.

Seriously, look at the homeless kids in the streets. ONLY African kids are starving?
Also, Africa is not always the poor and less economically developed continent. Think of Angola and Luanda - very luxurious! There are poorer countries elsewhere. Sure, Ethiopia struggles, but what about Laos, Timor-Leste, Detroit, and countries with ongoing wars?

Homework should take no more than x minutes

Ugh, the people who make these comments are the worst. In some subjects, I can write a paper in only an hour or two, but this does not apply to every subject. It also varies from person to person. Unless you're a preppy MENSA kid who can complete a whole series of calculus tests in less than 30 minutes, this is an inaccurate statement.

Kids should take their time, or they will rush and fail.

The Newcomers

? You must study hard or you will not have better life
? MSG is bad

This most likely comes from the racist "Chinese restaurant syndrome." People claimed that MSG makes everyone sick, is dangerous, and artificial, but that's NOT true.

MSG can also be found naturally in Parmesan cheese, dried mushrooms, dried seaweed, and tomatoes. Not everyone reacts negatively or gets sick after eating MSG. I eat instant noodles, but I never get sick.

That said, it should still be used moderately.

The Contenders
As long as you tried your best, it is good enough

As an adult, you don't get judged based on how hard you try but on whether you succeed or not. Teachers may give you partial credit for trying on a test, but in real life, there is no try, only do. It doesn't matter how hard you tried to meet your deadlines for your boss - at the end of the day, what will matter is whether you got it done.

So if I try my best and get 0% on every test, that's good enough? And everyone would still want to hire me?

If you get to know someone they will be nice to you

Most of the time, that's not the case. Most kids, especially from middle to high school, don't care about getting to know you.

Columbus discovered America

Only someone who is dumber than Dumbo himself would actually think that this statement is a fact. The natives were the first ones to discover America thousands of years ago, and long before that idiot Columbus was even conceived, there were several Northern European Vikings who had already set foot on the North American continent. And what did Columbus even "discover"? Just a few insignificant islands that aren't even located on either of the American continental plates. Yeah, TOTALLY the one who discovered America.

School is a safe place

Threats and school shootings are real. No school is 100% safe.

School helps you prepare for life

Partially true, but they don't teach you important things like how to pay for insurance, taxes, fees, etc. Why, schools?

All autistic kids have ADHD
Pluto is a planet
Mistakes are ok
Any degree is a good degree
Every kid is special in their own way

Some people are just ordinary, and there is nothing special about them. Yet teachers and parents will tell this to their kids and students.

That is the point. No one is special because everyone is special. It's almost like we are human beings who are each unique.

Teachers are nice and helpful
All students are required to be served milk

Milk allergies and sensitivities are real.

Video games are bad for you

Some popular video games are educational, like Minecraft. Others, like Undertale, teach morals. So no, video games aren't bad for you.

Gamers are richer than the school headmaster will ever be.

Do not approach the TV screen or you will be blind
Life is good

Only if you don't constantly restrict it!
