Reasons to Not Use a reCAPTCHA

The new CAPTCHA system for TheTopTens isn't good, sorry but its true.

The Top Ten

1 It is an unnecessary step to submitting a form

I can probably imagine SOME big-name websites using it, as well as those which deal in major deals like credit card sites and what not. But not for sites for free creation of content.

2 Even though it is supposed to keep bots away from a site, a bot can be programmed to work around it

3 Some of the word CAPTCHAs are near impossible to read by human eye anyways

4 The picture CAPTCHAs are inaccurate

"Select all squares with traffic lights" BUT NOT INCLUDING the backside of traffic lights for some reason.

5 The "click until none left" CAPTCHA never stops showing images you need to click

6 It can actually lessen a site's user base

Allow me to explain this one. Users are forced to use these things which basically are unnecessary doses of frictions just for doing things they want to do on their favorite sites (and by favorite things I do not mean anything malicious). While the main deal with CAPTCHAs is to protect spam and site abuse, it also could mean that users could just stop using the site altogether. Not good for a site that needs to grow.

7 A better alternative than using a CAPTCHA would be to simply monitor suspicious behavior from specific IPs, which CAPTCHA cannot do.

8 It does not protect against targeted attacks or any forms of malware

9 The "math problem" CAPTCHAs are way too difficult

10 The "pick the three hottest" CAPTCHA is inaccurate

I'm actually surprised that such a CAPTCHA even exists. But I know it's inaccurate. Beauty is on the inside. Regardless, this is a CAPTCHA no one should use.
