Egnomac Cartoon Review: The Wacky World of Tex Avery
egnomac Its Egnomac here to do a full review of what many people consider one of the worst cartoons ever made "The Wacky World of Tex Avery".First for a little history for or those of you who have been living under a rock Tex Avery is an American animator and director who was a huge influence in the animation industry known for producing and directing animated cartoons during the golden age of American animation who helped in the creation and evolution of several iconic cartoon characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Droopy Screwy Squirrel among many others. Avery's style of directing consisted of encouraging animators to stretch the medium and do things that that couldn't be done in live action and in a way help create a lot of the gags that we still see today, his influence can still be seen in more modern cartoons series like Ren and Stimpy, Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, SpongeBob Squarepants and even in the Loud House.
With that said lets move on to the Wacky World of Tex Avery a French Canadian American animated cartoon show created by Robby London and co produced by DIC animation using Tex Avery's name as in their worlds was suppose to be a an homage to the late great cartoonist and his squash and stretch animation style cartoons of this era, and the result is a heaping pile of garbage that feels more like an insult to everything Tex Avery has done for the animation industry. Lets start off with the intro as it shows you everything that your in for by immediately bombarding you with characters shouting "Welcome to the wacky, wacky wack, wack welcome to the wack,wack, welcome to the wacky world of Tex Avery" as characters invade the screen as disgusting fart and bodily function noises play in the background to the tune of Infernal Galop, it goes on for a full minute but it feel like it goes on for an eternity and is a real assault on you ear drums and will really make you change the channel. As for the actual show its self, each episode consists of three shorts with different characters which include Tex Avery, Pompe Pete, Freddy the Fly, Power Pooch, Maurice and Mooch, Genghis and Khannie and Einstone. While the segments contain a lot of influences from previous Tex Avery cartoon shorts their executed so horribly not to mention the pacing is very slow so not a single joke lands its like they literally tried copying the style of Tex Avery without even understanding why they worked in the first place and another point I need to bring up Tex Avery cartoons are known for being really fast paced and throw jokes at you almost every minute but at the same time they knew when to stop, in these shorts there's hardly a time when the show can just take a break.
Another point is the animation which just looks awful and and has very bland backgrounds as for the characters a lot of them look really hideous. The voice acting if you can even call it voice acting is very meh, despite having the talents of such recognizable voice actors Billy West, Maurice LaMarche and Cree Summers and you can tell they did the best with what they were given but their talents are completely wasted as for the rest of the voice actors they range from tolerable to down right aggravating.
An now lets go over the segments
Tex Avery
Usually the first segment of most episodes which is a cartoon about a goat riding cowboy named after Tex Avery himself who the creators made a caricature of who constantly clashes with his rival Sagebrusgh Sid usually over his on again off again girlfriend Chastity Knotts and I have to tell you neither of the characters are remotely likable even Tex himself who has a lot of the mannerisms of another Tex Avery created character Screwball Squirrel with none of the charm and just comes off as an A-hole which is pretty much how all of the other characters are in this show, as expected a lot of the jokes miss a lot of times they set up a joke and end up beating it into the ground, just to show off a few episodes one episode consists of Tex and Sid competing to be rodeo clowns to impress Chastity another the pair see her with a fat guy and think she's into fat guys so they spend a lot of the episode trying to out fat each other not joking another consists on Sid dressing up in drag to rob banks while Tex is helpless to stop him since he doesn't fight girls so he dresses himself up as a girl to stop him and another one has the two fighting over a cabin and end up destroying it as they find out its Chastity's cabin and fix it up making it fancy for her as she leaves them in the cold, yeah the episode are pretty terrible.
Freddy the Fly
Another Tom and Jerry style short which is probably the better of the Tex Avery shorts but thats not saying much as a pesky fly Freddy torments a obnoxious and overweight billionaires Amanda Banshee voiced by Scott McNeil who you may not know voiced Lord Raptor in both the American and anime versions of the Darkstalkers cartoon series as she tries to get rid of them in some of the most over the top way and while she's usually the one who starts some of the conflicts most of the time Freddy just causes trouble for her just to be an dick and a lot of the torment she gets feels unwarranted. Freddy is loosely based off one of Tex's earlier characters Homer the Homeless flea and comedian Red Skelton's Freddy the Freeloader.
Power Pooch
One of the few characters not based off one of Tex Avery's creations but instead based off Underdog as Power Pooch is your cliched stupid super hero character who causes a lot for destruction has no idea he's doing them and cause a lot of misery toward the people around him, he also has a side kick named little buddy whose a cat and has a nemesis Dr. Hydrant whose an actually hydrant which is the only few clever things they actually did for this short as he tries to destroy Power Pooch but fails due to Power Pooch thwarting his evil plans always by accident, the shorts portray Power Pooch as a brain dead idiot who can't comprehend anything thats going on and that's pretty much all the segments are is PP turning into a hero and causing more destruction due to his incompetence just to show you a couple of examples in one episode he mistakes a mummy from a museum as an actual person in need of help as he tries to save it , another has him going on vacation to a dog pound which he obviously doesn't know its a dog pound as Little Buddy tries to give him the shoe to get out as he constantly refuses it, another episode has him trying to become a peaceful monk only to cause destruction at the temple leading the other monks to kick him out.
Pompe Pete
Pompe Pete is a roman soldier who was buried in lave and awakens in the modern world as he constantly runs into and torments Dan who is a straight up a-hole and every episode consists of Pete annoying and getting him hurt in at times very violent ways and while Dan does deserve a lot of the torment the joke doesn't work because everything Pete does to him is unintentional and he's not trying to get retribution on him not to mention Pete comes off as nothing more then an Italian stereotype and not even a good one at that.
Genghis and Khannie
Genghis who is a caricature of Genghis Khan is a warlord who seeks to conquer the world and is consonantly being thwarted in his attempts by the incredibly annoying Khannie who just happens to be in whatever place he's trying to pillage including Scotland and Egypt and Genhis is easily defeated by her in some of the most ridiculous ways possible not to mention that Khannoe literally has almost no reaction when he tries to threaten her not to mention her voice is really jarring due to the fact that she's voiced by Cree Summer who you remember voiced Elmyra from Tiny Toon Adventures which is exactly what she sounds like for this cartoon and that's already a bad sign.
Einstone
He's a caveman inventor who attempts to teach the other cavemen how to be more civilized the only problem is everyone is too stupid to comprehend anything he says or does not to mention Einstone himself is extremely obnoxious and shoves his smartness in everyone face, literally every episode consists of him making a new invention and getting everyone pulverized by it and thats it, not to mention the caveman's character designs are really off putting including the episode where his mom comes to stay with him and she looks extremely hideous.
Maurice and Mooch
The final segment is your standard roadrunner Wile E Coyote cartoon where a fox Mooch attempts to eat the young Maurice Squab and is constantly being thwarted time and time again and again the jokes really don''t work here either.
Overall The Wacky World of Tex Avery isn't just of the worst cartoon because its so bad, its bad because of how much of an insult this is to the legacy of Tex Avery one of the most influential animators of his time and what's even sadder is this cartoon only exists because Tex's daughter Nancy Avery needed the money to pay for her children's college and when they were trying to get her permission to use her father's name to make this she was a little hesitant and consulted Chuck Jones who had worked with her father who normally who refuse their offer but instead told her the opposite and they even tried to shaft her in payment reminding her she was lucky they even had to ask her permission in the first place. For a bunch of people who claimed they wanted to make a cartoon series to be an homage to Tex Avery's legacy it clearly showed these people did not care about the legacy of one of the greatest animators and just wanted to use his name to make a quick buck and that my friends is down right despicable.
My final verdict I give this cartoon a 1 out 10 for being an unfunny mess of a cartoon made by a bunch of people who don't know how comedy works, ripped off better cartoons like Animaniacs and Ren adn Stimpy and tarnished the legacy of late great Tex Avery, avoid this one if you can if you truly wish to see a better alternative just watch the old Tex Avery shorts and leave this mess where it belongs in the dumpster.
