What are the Balkans?

The Balkans are a region in southeastern Europe, usually defined by geography, history, and culture rather than by one perfectly agreed-upon border. The name comes from the Balkan Mountains in Bulgaria, but in practice the term is used more broadly for countries on or around the Balkan Peninsula. Depending on the definition, the region commonly includes Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and the European part of Turkey.

Why is there sometimes disagreement about which countries are in the Balkans?

Because the Balkans are not a single political unit, there is no master switch that lights up and declares what counts. Some definitions lean on physical geography, while others focus on shared historical experience, especially centuries under the Ottoman Empire or links to former Yugoslavia. That is why countries like Slovenia and Romania are sometimes included in Balkan lists and sometimes treated as partly Central European or partly Eastern European instead.

What makes the Balkans historically important?

This region has long been a crossroads between Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean world. Empires did not just pass through here. They collided, traded, governed, fought, and left fingerprints all over the map. The Balkans have been shaped by the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire, the Habsburgs, and later the rise of modern nation-states, which is a lot of history for one neighborhood to carry around.
