Top 10 U.S. States that Should Join Canada

You've probably noticed the trend. Every time Trump says something wild, there's a spike in Google searches for "how to move to Canada." But what if Canada came to you? Let the border shift a bit and save everyone the headache of international moving fees and learning what the heck a "Timbit" is before they're ready.

Some states already feel halfway Canadian anyway. Cold weather, health care envy, and hockey culture? Check. If you're living in one of these places, you might already be apologizing too much and spelling "color" with a "u" without even realizing it.

So what are the U.S. states that should join Canada? Vote for the choices you think deserve to be at the top of this list. Whether you're serious, sarcastic, or somewhere in between, your picks help shape a not-so-united map of what could be America's northern reinvention.

The Top Ten
  1. Alaska

Alaska is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the Americas. The Canadian administrative divisions of British Columbia and Yukon border the state to the east, and it has a maritime border with Russia to the west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area and is... read more

Alaska should just join the Yukon. It is really annoying on maps that Alaska exists separately and would probably be better and happier in Canada's hands. Also, Alaska is cold, so there is not much of a climate change. Geopolitically and economically, it helps.

I live in Canada and I believe that Alaska would be a territory that would thrive under Canadian territory. It would also make more sense geographically speaking.

Alaska should join Canada because it is sitting next to Yukon. It would make sense geographically because Alaska sits far north of the 49th Parallel. Anything above 49 should be Canada's.

  2. Minnesota

Minnesota is a state in the Midwestern United States. It was admitted as the 32nd state on May 11, 1858, created from the eastern portion of the Minnesota Territory.

The state is known for its lakes, natural beauty, and high standard of living. It has a cold climate, particularly in the winter... read more

Minnesota is practically Canada anyway! Great, hardy people who can withstand arctic temperatures!

Wisconsin and Minnesota fit together perfectly. Might as well complete the area with Canada.

This is practically Canada anyway. Everything about the place is Canadian!

  3. Washington

Washington is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States located north of Oregon, west of Idaho, and south of the Canadian province of British Columbia on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. It is the only state named after a president. Washington is a hub for technology and aerospace industries... read more

Jesus, this should be part of Canada. It is so much like Canada that they are practically twins. I mean, the Olympic Peninsula is just so close to Vancouver Island you can spot it from Victoria. They both have mountains, coast, and warm valleys. Why isn't the whole Columbia River part of Canada? They share the same name. Canada exports so much to the USA that they should give us Washington!

Washington and British Columbia were to make a province at one point called Cascadia along with Oregon. The union is not dead yet, so why not?

  4. Maine

Maine is in the New England region of the northeastern United States and is the easternmost state in the contiguous U.S. Its capital is Augusta, and its largest city is Portland. The state is known for its rugged coastline and maritime history, and it is famous for seafood cuisine, especially lobster... read more

Maine is culturally the most similar to Canada (at least the Maritimes, anyway), so they'd fit right in. Having a more southern part that can actually get up to 90 degrees would be awesome!

Because Maine should come along with Vermont and New Hampshire.

  5. Vermont

Vermont is a state in the New England part of the northeastern region of the United States. It is the second least populous state in the country, after Wyoming, and is known for its forested natural beauty and progressive politics.... read more

I was proud and felt fortunate to be an American. My ancestry goes back to the Mayflower and key players in the Revolutionary War. But now I am ashamed.

And scared. Scared of what my country will do to Canada and Greenland, places that are not part of the USA. And scared for the citizens of the US. Vermont and Canada are so close.

Besides being neighbors, we even share a library that sits on both sides of the border. Many Vermonters have ancestors who came from Canada. Vermonters often go to Canada, as well as Canadians coming here. We share many of the same values.

Right now, I wish I did live in Canada. But Vermont has so much US history, I am not sure we would choose to be part of Canada. We were once our own country in a way. I hope we at least withdraw from the US.

  6. Oregon

Oregon is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada.... read more

Does Oregon have yahoos and con jobs? Sure, but we also have Alberta (where I live), so they are welcome too.

  7. Michigan

Michigan is a state located in the Great Lakes and Midwestern regions of the United States. It is the only state to consist of two peninsulas and is bordered by four of the five Great Lakes. Michigan is a major center of the U.S. automotive industry, with Detroit historically known as the Motor City... read more

People from Michigan sound like Ontarians and also act like them too! Plus, Michigan is just as cold as Canada, so they would adapt well to Canadian society. Detroit and Windsor account for a lot of trade already. Why not just join already?!

The land is shaped to fit all the pieces into Canada. Maybe Trump can't bother us there.

Especially the Upper Peninsula, Michigan's climate and culture are similar to Ontario.

  8. California

California is a state in the Southwestern United States. With 39.6 million residents across a total area of about 163,696 square miles (423,970 square kilometers), California is the most populous U.S. state and the third largest by area. The state capital is Sacramento, and the largest city is Los Angeles.... read more

Give Canada the economic strength of California and watch the red states flounder.

  9. New Hampshire

New Hampshire is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It was one of the original thirteen colonies and is known for its granite quarries and rugged landscapes. The state holds the first primary in the U.S. presidential election cycle, giving it political significance.

All of New England should just join Canada in my opinion and make a separate province. Or, with all the historically French ones going to Québec and the rest either joining New Brunswick or making a separate province!

    Well-educated electorate. Open-minded.

  10. New York

New York is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic region. It was one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States. As of 2025, it is the fourth most populous state, with over 19 million residents. To distinguish the state from the city with the same name, it is sometimes referred to... read more

They have enough shared business, and Canada already treats them better anyway.

Give Canada the economic strength of New York and watch red states suffer.

Hawaii is the 50th and most recent state of the United States of America, receiving statehood on August 21, 1959. It is an archipelago located in the central Pacific Ocean. Hawaii is known for its unique culture, volcanic landscapes, and thriving tourism industry.

Hawaii fits better with the politics of Canada, and it would make a lot of red-state Americans mad to lose it.

Excellent idea! Its military could defend the islands wearing hula skirts and chucking pineapples.

  16. Massachusetts

Massachusetts, officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is the most populous state in the New England part of the northeastern region of the United States. It is known for its significant colonial history, prestigious universities, and economic leadership in technology, finance, and healthcare.... read more

All New England states, except Fairfield County in Connecticut, should become the Canadian province of New England.

Wisconsin is a U.S. state located in the north-central United States, in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. It is known for its dairy production, especially cheese, and its progressive political history. Major cities include Milwaukee and Madison, the state capital.

Wisconsin used to be part of Ontario, has had many French-Canadian migrations, and could be a major addition to Canada's economy. Wisconsin cheese is one of Canada's major imports.

Honestly, people from here even sound Canadian!

  18. Pennsylvania

I was born here, and my entire line comes from here. But I choose Canada, and so should they.

  20. North Dakota

North Dakota is the 39th state of the United States, having been admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889. It is located in the Upper Midwest and is bordered by Canada to the north. The state has a strong agricultural base and a growing energy sector, particularly in oil and natural gas.

I mean, historically North Dakota is pretty close to Saskatchewan, and even the landscape looks the same.

Arguably the most useless state in the Union. Might as well be surrendered to Canada by now.

  21. Ohio

Ohio is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States. Ohio is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state is a key political swing state and is home to major cities like Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati.
