Top 10 Best Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Characters

The Top Ten
Jaden Yuki

Jaden Yuki is honestly the best duelist, and he only had three losses in nearly 200 episodes. His allies are Syrus, Alexis, Bastion, Atticus, Chazz, Aster, Zane, Axel, Jim, and Jesse. He is definitely the next King of Games.

Second place for me goes to Jaden Yuki. He's intelligent, humble, funny, and doesn't hate anyone. A main character who protects his friends throughout the whole anime series and isn't afraid of unknown danger, he proves that through his every duel.

The main protagonist, Jaden, with his Elemental Hero and Neo Space deck, always says, Get your game on! because the duel isn't over until the last card is played.

He can see Duel spirits and has the power of the Supreme King. Also, he can apparently see the inner spirits of people. No one knew what to think of this kid who came late to his entrance exams and was forced to duel Crowler instead of an easier opponent. He pulled off a massive upset over the weird (man, I think) teacher, which gained him a lot of attention from others and many doubters.

From that day on, he kept proving others wrong and improving people's thoughts of him time and time again. He has shown he'd do anything to help a friend and is willing to forgive even the craziest of people. His spirit and passion for dueling are very cool to see. For a long time, dueling to him was nothing but fun times and a game (even having a fun time dueling in a Shadow Duel).

Until later on, when more duels he fought, the more danger he was in, and so were his friends. He saves the day nearly all the time and loves dueling. Though he's a great Duelist, his grades aren't that great, mainly because he's not paying attention or he's sleeping through class. But his ability to pull a rabbit out of his deck to win duels is what's kept him from being expelled on many occasions.

Professor Crowler has been making Jaden jump over hurdles to just survive, and that was only in season 1. He's had to battle so many crazy, power-hungry villains like Sartorius, Viper, Shadow Riders, Yubel, Supreme King, and more. How he's kept that smile is shocking to most. He's even beaten the Sacred Beasts twice.

He's also merged with Yubel to once again be together but also to stop Yubel from causing any more damage after leading Jaden and his friend into a dark world to search for Jesse, who was under the control of Yubel after their 2 on 1 duel against her.

Other than his grades, or lack thereof,... more

Zane Truesdale

Zane is a great character throughout the series. One of the strongest duelists ever. I didn't really like him when he became evil but he was really good at dueling then as well. I love how he realizes that he was wrong about his little brother Syrus.

Also, the way he decided to stand down in the duel against Camula was very brave of him and he lost that duel for Syrus. He has nice hair and eyes.

He's a humble and brilliant duelist. I like towards the end of season 3 where he was dueling Dark Jesse and actually told Syrus he's proud of him. Even though he kinda mocked him before, I mean, he's his brother after all, so that's nice of him.

I do love his Cyber Dragon deck.

Alexis Rhodes

Alexis is a good character and one of the smartest students in Duel Academy. She has definitely become more fond of Jaden. A lot of the guys are falling for her. She has beaten Chazz, Atticus, and Titan.

I like Lexi because she has an interesting-looking deck. Her Cyber Girls are strong, and her ritual monsters too. She's in Obelisk Blue definitely for a reason.

In the anime, I really don't remember her winning any duels, but I think she did.

This attractive and strong female duelist is one of the most talented at Duel Academy. She's also overly popular and is everyone's eye candy. She's also a really almost perfect student. She rarely causes trouble.

She has many Female Warriors and Ritual Cards. She is quite the smart duelist too. I'd want to have her support if I ever was in a duel and needed help.

She doesn't have many downsides other than her popularity (even if she doesn't acknowledge it too often).

She's always supporting her friends but she can also get very angry and depressed.

She is quite fond of Jaden since she first saw him make waves in the school and beat her in a forced duel in comeback fashion. In the last two seasons, she's really looking out for him even when he's beating himself up. Oh, also because Jaden saves her darkness-ridden brother Atticus from the control of the shadows.

In Season 4, Alexis wasn't sure what she would do after graduating, but it took a Tag Duel with Jaden to help her figure out what she wants to do. They both skirt around the real words, but they are both grateful for meeting one another.

There are many things that make Alexis the great duelist and strong person and make her gain a lot of attention when she is nearby. She wears her emotions on her sleeve and she's easy to connect with as a character. Now, as you can see, she's very good looking. Beautiful is the word and there is good quality to her, but she's more than just a body. She's a strong woman with a passion for dueling and friends.

Important Cards - Cyber Blader, Etoile Cyber, Blade Skater, Cyber Prima, Cyber Tutu, Cyber Angel Benten, Cyber Angel Dakini, White Veil, Fusion Gate

Cyber Warriors is her Recipe

Closest Allies - She has lots of friends but is only close with a few people: Atticus Rhodes, Mindy, Jasmine, Zane, and Jaden

Her nicknames are Lex, Lexi, Queen of Obelisk Blue.

Bastion Misawa

The smartest character in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX! His decks revolve around calculations and carefully studying his opponents. I like that he's that kind of guy, and he really is smart. He shows that many times.

I do love his Bonding H2O deck with Hydrogedon, Oxygedon, and Water Dragon, his signature monster.

He did get a little bit lost in the shuffle for a while, but early on, he was really, really big!

He's basically a dueling genius. His IQ is beyond any other student at Duel Academy. He duels by relying on science and not instincts. He is looked at as #2, only to Jaden when it comes to duel skills because he hasn't beaten him.

His two downsides are not being noticed more times than not and his weakness to focusing around women and female cards. He was once so distracted by Shadow Rider/Amazon Woman Tania he lost focus to her power, failed to beat her, and lost the key.

His brain is outstanding. It can figure out a problem in no time and he also took time to work with Dr. Eisenstein to improve his knowledge. He's a complete dueling package with everything but being number 1.

Important Cards - Water Dragon, Oxygeddon, Magnet Warriors, Blade Knight, Hydrogeddon, Plasma Warrior Eitom, Doom Swordsman, White Magician Pikeru

His recipe is, well, he actually has many different decks for the different monster types.

Closest Allies are few and far between, but his best pals are Jaden, Syrus, and Tania (Amazon Woman).

His nicknames are Niban, Misawy.

Aster Phoenix

Aster Phoenix is definitely good-looking. He is a good duelist but has been beaten by Jaden, Chazz, Sartorius, and Adrian. I actually thought he was going to beat Adrian, but I guess I was wrong.

Aster's cards include Destiny Hero Plasma, Destiny Hero Doom Lord, Destiny Hero Dogma, Diamond Dude, and Captain Tenacious. He has beaten Jaden and Zane. That was literally Zane's first defeat.

Third place goes to Aster Phoenix. I love him because he gives his life to protect his friends in one episode, which is, in fact, a sad one for me. Also, his Destiny Heroes are also nice-looking.

Chazz Princeton

You know the cheer. Chazz it up! He has definitely grown as a duelist and person. He defeated Alexis the second time and also Aster Phoenix, which surprised me. He saved Duel Academy by beating his brother Slade in a duel.

He might be a little arrogant, but he is an amazing duelist. If I ever could, I would make a reboot of GX with Chazz as the main character who is super nice and selfless. At the end of the show, Alexis would kiss him.

Even though he's a jerk character at the beginning of the anime, he changes and grows as a duelist and a person as time goes on and during the second season.

Tyranno Hassleberry

This dinosaur-blooded Sergeant Duelist we met in the 2nd season has become a really important character. Cool fact: he actually has dinosaur DNA in his body because there is a dinosaur bone in his leg. Hassleberry's bullying was put to a halt by Jaden, and it seems to change him for the best. He looked at Jaden as a true friend and a hero.

His downsides are that he speaks and acts like an Army Sergeant nearly all the time, and he's so loud. Also, he always talks about how he'll exact revenge on an enemy but often backs down.

He eventually becomes a very strong-minded and reliable soldier of sorts for The Duel Academy when it came under attack by The Duel Ghouls and the dimension change. He's a natural-born leader, and with his dinosaur senses, he's one heck of an awesome duelist.

He's shown little interest in love, though at times he'll comment about girls.

Important Cards - Black Tyranno, Ultimate Tyranno, Gilasaurus, Dark Driceratops, Black Stego, Jurassic World, Big Evolution Pill, Jurassic Impact

Dinosaurs are his deck recipe.

Closest Allies - Mainly Jaden, Syrus, and Blair. Also shares a connection with Jim.

His nicknames are Dino Boy and Serg.

Jesse Anderson

Jesse Anderson is like Jaden. He has a bond with his cards and can talk to duel spirits. He has a passion for dueling too. He has a legendary deck, the Crystal Beasts. Luckily, he got the Rainbow Dragon which I think is a great card.

When Jesse was possessed by Yubel, he used a dark crystal beast deck. He was trapped in the Rainbow Dragon card but thank goodness Jaden saved him. He is my second favorite character to me. He has beaten Adrian and Zane. He is so good-looking. He has got nice teal hair and nice eyes. His accent is cute.

Jim Crocodile Cook

I love Jim. He is good-looking, has a cool Australian accent, and honestly, I love his pet crocodile, Shirley.

Well, hello there, mate. That's how Jim greets most people. Coming from South Academy as a transfer, Jim Cook is a very unique character for a few reasons. He's got a pet/partner crocodile named Shirley, who he's protected his entire life from poachers and gained her trust.

He uses Shirley to figure out if he can trust someone depending on how she reacts to them. She can also sense weird vibrations in the ground, which has helped significantly when Viper was causing energy drainage.

Now, he also has a unique power called the Eye of Orichalcum, which had to do with a comet. It can give him the ability to look into people's minds and souls and what's happening within. He gained this power by risking his life to save Shirley from a trap and fell into a river. He used this power to try and reach into Jaden's mind when he was at the time the Supreme King and the darkness was at its strongest point.

Jim had kept the Eye covered in bandages until the time was right, and that was now. So, Jim nobly risked everything and dueled his hardest to free his friend. Sadly, Jim couldn't hold on to win, but he got the message across that Jaden isn't alone and it's not all his fault. He used the power of his eye to also give it to Axel, who somehow was able to find a way to use Jim's special power and free Jaden when Axel and the Supreme King both lost. Jim's presence gave Axel a much-needed boost in confidence after he was terrified after Jim lost to the King.

In his time on the show, he showed that he's an awesome and good duelist. He also saves the new pals he's made from danger, like Alexis nearly drowning during a Jaden duel and a Viper trap.

His confidence and strong side are some of the coolest parts of him, oh, and he's got a good sense of humor. He really has no bad downside. The only thing is he's not too fond of the students making fun of his Australian accent all the time.

He never was looking for love, though he mentioned Shirley... more

Dark Magician Girl

That's literally one of my favorite cards! I love Dark Magician Girl!

The Newcomers

? Lyman Banner

As Amnael, he devastated most of the high-end duelists on this list with ease and pushed Jaden to become stronger than ever. Also, his ability to be chill and funny was awesome.

? Blair Flannigan

Blair, she's an interesting one. I do have on DVD that episode where she dueled Jaden for the first time, and boy, was it good. I like her because she showed her emotions for Zane at first, but in fact, she loved Jaden, even though she was still 8 years old at the time when she faced him for the first time.

Her deck is interesting, and she is just helpful during the whole anime series. She also grows a lot later on as a duelist.

The Contenders
Atticus Rhodes
Jasmine
Syrus Truesdale

Jaden's closest friend is a character who lacks confidence and courage in the beginning. But I like that he manages to get to Ra Yellow further on. He's humble and looks up to his friends.

His deck is good. He even beat Jaden once!

This little guy's name is Syrus. He's the younger brother of Zane, who is also haunted by the way Zane treated him when he was younger. Syrus used bad language when he got in over his head in duels. Ever since then, Syrus has been afraid to use his most powerful spell card, Power Bond, because he didn't know how to play it right.

Syrus isn't as bad a duelist as he keeps saying to everyone. His problem is the self-doubt that prevents him from shining most of the time. Syrus has a hidden but strong side to him. When he finds that little ounce of belief in himself, he can hold his own in duels and he's even won quite a few.

In many ways, Jaden helped Syrus so many times and got him out of trouble. Jaden always showed that he believed in Syrus and has his back. One of the first true signs of this was Syrus and Jaden's Tag duel against Para and Dox. This was set up by Crowler to try and teach Jaden a lesson and force Syrus to duel alongside him, knowing Syrus in his mind was a weak duelist. The duel was getting worrisome for Syrus and Jaden, but through the help of Jaden's friendship, Syrus was able to overcome his fears and help Jaden win the Tag duel.

Also, at some point over time, Syrus finally used Power Bond in the right way and it ended a lot of his self-doubt. To the point, he tried dueling against his brother Zane, who at this time was a much darker and ruthless dueler. This duel didn't go Syrus's way, but it did make him stronger and made Zane realize Syrus has become better.

Through thick and thin, Syrus has been the best friend of Jaden, even when times were hard when Jaden was the Supreme King. In many ways, Syrus was one of the main reasons Jaden was able to get free from the dark.

Syrus has also elevated from Slifer to Ra to Obelisk, showing he's really grown stronger.

His other downsides are he's super scared and petrified almost every single time something goes wrong. Also, he can scream for a long time which... more

Vellian Crowler

I didn't think I would put this character on this list at all, but here he is. I do have my dislikes for this character, mainly because in the whole first season, he's working so that Jaden gets expelled from the school and actually acting as such a jerk professor and kind of a villain, but not really. But I like that he changes during the end of the first season, while dueling Camula.

I thought he was a real jerk at first. But that all changed when he went up against Camula.

Axel Brodie

He was very intriguing and became super important as season 3 went on.

Adrian Gecko
Yubel
Chumley Huffington

Well, all I can say is this guy has a skill for designing cards and a skill for eating grilled cheese. He's not a terrible duelist by any means, but Chumley lacks in the motivation department and isn't a good student, as he was held back due to his grades. He's a very big guy with a good heart when it comes to his designing and his love for his Koala cards.

Eventually, after Jaden and Syrus came along, he started doing a lot more than just being a lazy student. He was having a lot of fun with his new friends. But then, after a call to Sheppard, it was discovered that Chumley's hot sauce working dad was coming to the island to take his son back home because he wasn't doing well enough with his grades. So, Jaden decided to give Chumley a hand in the duel against his dad where if he lost, he'd be forced to leave Duel Academy.

Chumley showed he's not a pushover duelist, but he still couldn't beat his dad. But before Chumley was saying goodbye, his dad left a note saying he sees how good of friends he has made and that he wouldn't want to take him from them or rip away his dreams. Then, once people started noticing how good at designing cards Chumley was, he explained the story behind the card. It was also revealed that he could hear and see Duel spirits just like Chazz and Jaden.

Some time later, one of his old creations was sent to Pegasus, in which his card Ayers Rock Sunrise won the challenge, and he was given the honor of helping Pegasus by being a card designer for Industrial Illusions. He has no real love interest other than his Koalas and designing. Before leaving the island, he gave Jaden a new card, Skyscraper 2 Hero City.

His downside is his lack of motivation and his obsession for grilled cheese.

Important Cards - Big Koala, Des Kangaroo, Des Koala, Master of Oz, Wild Nature's Release, Ayers Rock Sunrise

Closest Allies - Jaden, Syrus, Des Koala
