Top 10 Most Disturbing Moments In Anime

Anime, with its boundless creativity and imagination, often takes us on unforgettable journeys through varied landscapes of emotion. It has this extraordinary ability to capture the essence of the human spirit and push the boundaries of storytelling. And while many of these tales are uplifting, filled with laughter and romance, others plunge into darker territories, serving up scenes that are genuinely unsettling and downright disturbing.

As we delve into this, it's important to note that these scenes that disturb, upset, or shock us, often do so for a reason. They may highlight societal issues, explore the darkness that lurks within the human psyche, or push the envelope of our comfort zones to provoke thought and discussion. They're not simply there to serve up a platter of chills and thrills, but to make us reflect, question, and possibly understand the world a bit better.

These disturbing moments don't eclipse the inherent beauty of anime, but rather enhance its range. They make us appreciate the light-hearted moments more and serve as stark reminders of the complexities of the human condition that anime isn't afraid to explore. And while they may not be everyone's cup of tea, their influence on the narrative and the emotional responses they generate are undeniably powerful.
The Top Ten
Nina Tucker is turned into a chimera - Fullmetal Alchemist

Definitely very disturbing. Her father gave her worse than death.

I still cannot watch the rest of the series because of this episode.

By far the most disturbing thing I've ever seen in anime.

The abuse and death of the puppy - Elfen Lied

I've seen a lot of messed up things in anime, but the scene where these two guys are viciously beating this poor dog to death was too much even for me.

I was horrified when watching this scene. Why would a bunch of little kids beat an innocent puppy to death?

It didn't help that shortly after, Lucy killed them all.

Goosh Goosh - Tokyo Tribe

Don't watch that scene. The anime is pretty good, but that scene was cancer to my brain.

Unless you want to throw up, I don't recommend watching the scene.

The Eclipse - Berserk
Satoko gets tortured - Higurashi When They Cry
Ed and Al's failed transmutation - Fullmetal Alchemist

Ed and Al attempted to bring their mother back to life. Instead, everything goes wrong. Ed loses a leg, Al loses his body, Ed trades one of his arms for Al's soul, and the result of all their sacrifice is this creepy and disturbing black thing.

Yes, when I was a child, I was confused when I saw it on TV.

The atomic bomb - Barefoot Gen

Let me reiterate: On August 6, 1945, the USA dropped a bomb on Hiroshima (and three days later, Nagasaki) to force Japan to surrender and end World War II.

It doesn't make the MELTING EYEBALLS part any less horrifying. The little girl... the soldier... the old man... the woman and her baby... the dog... you can't say that isn't more terrifying than fiction.

I was going to vote for The Eclipse from Berserk. But the reason why I'm voting for this is because the explosion actually happened in history. You can literally see the people melting.

Videl gets destroyed by Spopovich - Dragon Ball Z

This whole fight was hard to watch. Spopovich is just wailing on poor Videl, really beating on her to the point where even the people in the stands were disturbed the whole time.

I'm saying to myself, "Somebody please stop the match, enough's enough." While all this is going on, Videl's father Hercule is nowhere to be found. His daughter is being beaten to death by Spopovich, and he's hiding out in his dressing room.

This scene haunted me in my childhood. I'll never forget it. Poor girl gets beaten nearly to death by a man twice her size.

She could have killed him if he hadn't been possessed, save the fact that she twisted his neck with one kick.

The bunnies - Blood-C
Envy's monstrous form - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

He becomes this incredibly huge monster made up of the bodies of the poor souls used to make the Philosopher's Stone. Even Edward couldn't bear to strike him, seeing the faces of those tortured souls.

The Newcomers

? Public kill - Psycho-Pass

One of the most messed-up scenes in anime. A random person goes around killing people because the mask he's wearing won't make him look suspicious. Eventually, he sees a woman in a crowded street and starts beating her to death. However, since the anime is set in the future with advanced technology that can immediately identify criminals, the rest of the people around stand and watch, looking completely expressionless. They don't understand what's happening or how to react. Some even start recording it, thinking it's some kind of show.

? Spandam's demise at Enies Lobby - One Piece
The Contenders
Shinji's eye gets ripped out - Deadman Wonderland

It's exactly what it sounds like. After losing to Ganta at Carnival Corpse, Senji is forced to play a penalty game and has his eye literally ripped out.

Hisoka's orgasm - Hunter x Hunter
Tetsuo's mutation - Akira

I actually saw this scene on YouTube one time and was browsing through the comment section. I read one where the person said he actually saw this scene at age 4.

F'ed up world we live in, folks.

I just can't get it out of my head!

Toothbrush incest - Nisemonogatari
Chihiro's parents turn into pigs - Spirited Away
Neferpitou probes Pokkle's brain - Hunter x Hunter

This moment was very disturbing, and I first saw the episode on Toonami.

Asuka's brutal death - End of Evangelion
Tamaki forces Ganta to watch footage of the Carnival Corpse matches - Deadman Wonderland

Not only does Tamaki admit to Ganta that he rigged the evidence against Ganta during his trial, he then forces him to watch these gruesome matches from the Carnival Corpse.

Clearly, the makers of the show were fans of A Clockwork Orange.

The ending - School Days
Mustang's relentless assault on Envy - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Envy-Kun! I ship my OC with Envy because I thought he could be redeemed if someone would have just shown him love and hope, but that never happened.

I guess this scene is something that I'll surely have to rewrite. Maybe Mira should be burned at least once by accident because she was trying to protect Envy. Whomever responds next, please tell me what you think.

Super Buu kills the Z Fighters - Dragon Ball Z
Pierrot le Fou - Cowboy Bebop

The moment when Mad Pierrot was crying for his mother after Spike hurt him with the throwing knife...

Shiro's dual personalities - Deadman Wonderland
Sabrina and her creepy doll - Pokémon
Death of Sears's mother followed by necrophilia - Hellsing Ultimate
