Top 10 One Piece Characters with the Saddest Back Stories and Childhood
Sanji had it rough. His mother died early, he was considered a failure, neglected by his father, beaten up daily by his siblings, then locked up and forced to wear an iron mask because his father didn't want anyone to see him. This was before his ship sank and he was left starving on a rock for three months.
The part when he was starving on the rock was already kinda sad, but when you learn what happened before that with the bullying, rejection, beatings, death of his mom, and iron mask... Jeez, Sanji has some rotten luck.
Pretty much the standard package of watching everything you've ever loved die. The difference with Law was that he was certain he was going to die too, so he believed he had nothing to live for. Everyone else on this list still had their motivations for living. His was mutual destruction until Corazon gave him hope, but even then, his new purpose was for revenge. He explicitly states he never thought he'd survive past Dressrosa, so all this time, the poor guy has never had to live just for the sake of living. Nico Robin comes close, but the Buster Call is at least clean. She didn't have to see her loved ones get their brains blown out (if that can be considered mercy).
Also, his sickness caused him to be in constant pain.
Poor Robin literally had nothing to lose before joining the Straw Hats! Nevertheless, she showcased remarkable resilience from the Ohara incident to when she finally found her much-deserved friends. Her character is a great role model in teaching us to stay strong even when things seem hopeless.
That's why I love One Piece. It teaches us valuable life lessons without being too preachy!
Her mother left her, she was mistreated by her aunt, then everyone she knew died.
Undoubtedly deserves the fourth place. I mean, the guy literally lost his whole crew, died, and then revived, only to aimlessly sail in the middle of the ocean for 50 years! And yet, he's the most joyful and funny person you could ever meet!
Just like Robin, Brook is a role model we should all look up to when it comes to staying resilient through the bleakest moments. Their stories prove that better days will eventually come, even if they seem distant!
How is Brook so low here? He literally watched all of his friends die, one by one, as they sang a song with fake smiles. Honestly, we don't know too much about him, but thinking about how lonely he probably was hurts me.
Poor reindeer! He was discriminated against and rejected by his family (and the humans of Drum Island) for something that wasn't even his fault. I was so happy when he finally joined the Straw Hats!
He had to leave his family. Then he tried to get along with the townspeople and got shot. A nice doctor took him in and promised not to shoot him, and later he did. Then he was taken in by another doctor, and his old doctor died by a corrupt king.
Poor little Chopper. Rejected by his family and alone until he found the doctor.
She might be short-tempered and bossy, but it's easy to understand why, and I don't blame her. She saw her adoptive mother brutally killed by Arlong right in front of her. To add insult to injury, she was forced to work and sweat under Arlong for years, only for him to break his promise just when Nami had saved enough money!
And to be honest, I like how even after the situation was resolved, Nami retained her hardened demeanor and quick temper. It's more realistic and believable than the "problem solved, character is finally happy" trope we see everywhere else! Oda really knows how to develop characters and make them feel more human. By defying the traditional storytelling tropes we've seen in other stories, he's managed to give us phenomenal and fascinating characters like Luffy, Nami, Robin, and Usopp, alongside a diverse cast of wonderfully crafted characters!
Doflamingo was a world noble, but his father decided to leave and become human rather than a god. Honestly, he had to run and hide for two years, eating garbage and getting beaten up. His mother died of an illness, and he was captured and tortured until he unlocked Haki. He was then given a pistol by Trebol and killed his father. He tried to return with his father's head but was called a traitor by the Celestial Dragons. He later became the captain of the Donquixote Family, killed his brother Corazon for betraying him, and more. I feel like he has the most tragic backstory in One Piece and is the best villain.
The Newcomers
It's not fair. Ace should be first, in my opinion. He died for his brother. I love Ace so much.
I really didn't like him in the beginning, but after seeing his backstory, I kinda started liking him. It's the problem in One Piece. You can't really hate anyone because of their backstory.
If you had seen One Piece Gold, you would understand why Tesoro had a sad childhood.
I think people are forgetting some of the stuff he went through. It may not have been as sad as some others, but he did get tortured and abused, his brothers died, and he survived the genocide of Gray Terminal.
His brothers died, he got tortured, and the person he cared about most got his arm bitten off saving him. I think this is an easy vote.
He saw someone he cared about get his arm bitten off. Then that person left him. He lost his brother, Sabo. He was tortured, and that's why he's my number ten pick.
Imagine your wife dying in your arms without knowing that you are her husband. Imagine yourself trying to comfort your daughter (because her mother just died) while she cries, thinking that you are just a strange toy. Just imagine your own daughter saying, "You are not even my father," to you, and you are just watching all of that for ten years, powerless because you can't even prove her wrong.
