Top 10 Best Monster Hunter Flagship Monsters

Every Monster Hunter game has that one beast. You know the one. The creature slapped across the box art, roaring its face off while you're still back at camp trying to figure out how whetstones work. That's the flagship monster. It's the apex of the game's ecosystem, the crown jewel of its campaign, and the creature you spend hours prepping to fight only to get slammed through a mountain on your first attempt.

These monsters aren't just tough. They set the tone. From the thunder-charged electricity of Zinogre to the rocket-propelled rage of Valstrax, each flagship is carefully crafted to reflect the game it stars in. Some of them test your patience, others your reflexes, and a few might even test your TV's durability when you cart for the fifth time in a row. Still, beating them is one of the most satisfying experiences Monster Hunter has to offer.

So which one stands above the rest? That's where you come in. Pick your favorite, vote it up, and see how your taste stacks against the rest of the hunting community.

The Top Ten
  1. Tigrex (Monster Hunter Freedom 2)

No words can describe the feeling of landing the final blow on the Tigrex. It almost kills you in the intro to the game, threatens you in a few quests, and then when the time for the battle with your rival finally comes... you will probably be destroyed. Again and again.

It feels impossible at first, but you start to learn how to use the environment to your advantage, memorize its attack patterns, and find a way to dodge its merciless charging. This monster is relentless. It doesn't give you a second to rest. The built-up rivalry makes you feel like a god when you finally defeat it and make it into a helmet.

You have to face it in MHF2 to understand why he's the best flagship monster. Simple words can't describe the thrill of that hunt.

  2. Gore Magala (Monster Hunter 4)

Gore Magala is easily the best representative of a Monster Hunter game. Since 4U was my first Monster Hunter game, he quickly became my favorite due to his awesome fighting style, unique way of weakening you, and overall design.

As the main focus of 4U's story, he was created to be a challenge, and Capcom succeeded. If you need to know why he's #1, look him up on images. There's your answer.

Intimidating, powerful, with an interesting fight that features unique mechanics and very well-done build-up and story integration - Gore Magala does everything right. Much better than any of the previous flagships, in my opinion.

  3. Zinogre (Monster Hunter Portable 3rd)

Zinogre and its subspecies are the only species of Fanged Wyvern, so they are very unique both in move sets and designs.

Electric doggo of sick flips is my main man. I would put Gore Magala as a close second because he is my spirit animal.

Super. Saiyan. Electric. Wolf. That is all.

  4. Nargacuga (Monster Hunter Freedom Unite)

Badass design, extremely difficult, and a good expansion of what a monster with Tigrex's body shape could do.

Best monster in terms of fun, design, dynamics, and rewards. It sure ain't an Elder Dragon, but it's the most fun foe to battle.

  5. Brachydios (Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate)

A monster that literally punches explosions using explosive goo. What's not to love? Its equipment is ridiculously overpowered though.

  6. Lagiacrus (Monster Hunter Tri)

I think that all the flagship monsters are amazing - they're all very awesome and creative in their own right and all very formidable monsters. However, I believe that the Lagiacrus did the best job of representing its respective game, with Tri introducing underwater combat. Not only did it look cool and feel fun to fight, but it also did a better job than any other monster of being intimidating and challenging.

Lagiacrus truly felt like a Lord of the Seas when fighting him underwater. His speed, grace, and aggression made it clear that you were playing by his rules. I don't care what new moves they try to give him. He'll never again reach his former glory without underwater combat.

  7. Kushala Daora (Monster Hunter 2)

Although barely recognized as a flagship monster, it is a metallic dragon. Yes, A METALLIC DRAGON. So badass that just going near it makes you fall over from the strength of the wind produced by its wings. This monster proved that size wasn't everything compared to some of the previous hulking Elder Dragons.

What's cooler than a metal-plated dragon that controls storms?

    That's right, I didn't think so.

By far the best Elder Dragon, best flagship, and my second favorite monster, so yeah.

  8. Seregios (Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate)

I like the Seregios because it has a wild and cool look, is fast, and is somewhat hard to beat. It goes in the top for me because it is one of the only invasion monsters in the flagships besides Rathalos.

  9. Rathalos (Monster Hunter Freedom)

THE flagship monsters for the Monster Hunter series, the Raths tie the games together in a way that no other monster can hope to do. As a veteran Monster Hunter, I am biased in favor of the Fire Wyverns.

However, I wish Capcom would put more effort into integrating them into a storyline for once. The wyvern is fantastic, but the producers are jerks.

Basically the one that ties all the games together. Monster Hunter just isn't Monster Hunter without the Rathalos.

Brilliant monsters. However, although they laid the foundation, they didn't expand upon it.

  10. Azure Rathalos (Monster Hunter G)

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Magnamalo (Monster Hunter Rise)

  13. ?

Bloodbath Diablos (Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate)

  14. The Contenders
  15. Glavenus (Monster Hunter Generations)

A dinosaur with a 15-foot ignitable tail. Tell me what is better besides the Tigrex.

  16. Valstrax (Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate)

  17. Velkhana (Monster Hunter World: Iceborne)

Velkhana is one of the main antagonists of Monster Hunter: Iceborne. From the beginning, we know of its existence, and various cinematics and battles showcase its power. It is so powerful that we have two "practice" fights to train before the real challenge.

Dodge the ice laser, the stalactites, the ice floor, and finally reach our rival. And then it kills us with the tail.

  18. Nergigante (Monster Hunter World)

The buildup for Nergigante and his fight is a long one in World's story, but it is a fun first-time battle when you have to learn his fight pattern and abilities. Before some updates, he was the second wall for players (the first being the Anjanath for most), and rightly so, in my opinion.

However, he changed with the updates and now is honestly easy if you know what you're doing. His concept as the Eater of Elder Dragons is neat, but what am I to fear when I could just bash his face in with a hammer? Cool battle theme, though.

  19. Mizutsune (Monster Hunter Generations)

  20. Gammoth (Monster Hunter Generations)

  21. Astalos (Monster Hunter Generations)
