Top Ten Worst Things That Have Happened in 2024

Alright, I think that despite the fact that we are still in January of 2024 as of this typing, we might as well create a list here.

Yes, this will likely continue my long-running monthly analysis posts, but let's face it, there are many events out there that will shape the landscape and culture of the world this year. It's worth noting all the things that will make us feel like 2024 is going to somehow be worse than 2023.

So, add items as you wish, but be proper about adding them. No weird items involving celebrity scandals or such unless they are that ridiculous.
The Top Ten
1 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake in Noto Peninsula, Japan

New Year's Day started incredibly rough for Japan with a deadly earthquake in the western part of Honshu. There was also a tsunami with it. At least 168 dead so far.

2 Israel-Hamas War Continues

The first three items are actually nothing new. However, they go right into 2024 fairly strong and will likely stay as the worst things throughout the whole year. Now, in 2023, this particular item got to the top of the list and I think it is fitting that it is at the top for this year too. We don't know if or when there will be any ceasefire, but nearly every civilian is calling for one on both sides. Meanwhile, the protestors on both sides are still being unruly all over the globe. This is going to remain an ugly conflict.

3 Chilean Wildfires

In a matter of about 2 days, wildfires broke out and reached historic magnitudes in Chile. 26 are dead, but it's expected to go further. This is another reminder of the true horrors of uncontrolled fires in places and how climate change is playing a big role in this. Prayers for all the families affected.

As of 13 February 2024, it looks like both the wildfires in Valparaíso and Puerto Montt are gone. President Boric has announced a reconstruction team.

4 Russian Invasion of Ukraine Continues

This is the next ongoing conflict and still is a big one. Unfortunately, I really don't see how Ukraine is going to chew their way out of this one, no matter the support they get.

5 Perry High School Shooting

Our first mass shooting of the year occurred at a rural high school in Iowa. One student was confirmed dead, along with the perpetrator who shot himself. This happened weeks before the Republican caucuses in the state. It's also been reported that the perpetrator was LGBTQ+ (genderfluid) and had been bullied at school.

6 U.S. Border Crisis Continues

And the last ongoing item is here. We've had many border crossings and there is significant outcry about what U.S. leadership is doing regarding the border, and it doesn't look like it's going to be anything good.

We need to stop letting people in. Pretty soon the government will force you to turn your house into a migrant shelter. We need to say no to them for once.

Should be #1. There are too many drug addicts here and it is more sad than whatever is going on above.

7 Kerman Bombings

91 dead at a commemorative event marking Soleimani's assassination in Iran. The Afghanistan branch of ISIS was responsible for two separate bomb explosions.

8 Fort Worth Sandman Signature Hotel Explosion

One concern I have is about building explosions, often caused by gas leaks and similar issues. Proper maintenance is crucial to prevent such incidents. However, the larger the building, the greater the potential impact. There have been 21 injuries and no deaths so far, but one person was reported missing at the time.

9 Downtown Orlando Parking Garage Shooting

Another dark day in Florida. A man was killed when a fight at a parking garage in Orlando ended with a deadly shooting. Violence is not the solution to problems. Rest in Peace to him and prayers for his family.

10 Release of the Epstein Files

Where do we begin with this? The release was eagerly anticipated by those interested in conspiracy theories involving Epstein and human trafficking. Several high-profile names were revealed in these documents, likely changing many people's perspectives on some famous individuals.

I can't believe people let Stephen Hawking do things to them. I don't know why Stephen Hawking is famous and liked by people in the first place.

With the release of the Epstein Files, the memes about this have exploded in popularity, especially with Stephen Hawking.

The Newcomers

? Two Steps from Hell Disbands

They were the leading duo of dramatic music from February 14, 2006 to April 8, 2024.
They were best when they were together.

? Columbia University Pro-Palestinian Campus Occupation

Currently ongoing as of now but it really needs to be said that the drama escalating over this and class cancellations are ruining this university.

The Contenders
11 Convicted Man who was Denied Probation Lunges at Clark County, NV Judge and Attacks Her

In what is a viral video, a man who was convicted of a felony and had multiple other crimes under him was denied probation. When he heard this, he flew over the judge's table to attack her and started to fight with her. This video showcases an issue with how criminals view the law. They want to be given incentives all the time, and when they don't get what they want, they act as if they have nothing left to lose. This man will definitely serve more time for this incident, and let's hope that incidents like this don't happen again.

12 Moscow Crocus City Hall Attack

As much as the media wants everyone to hate on Russia, that really refers to the government and Putin. Remember, there are Russian citizens that have been dealing with hardships their entire life, and this, boy howdy this is one terrorist attack. It's claimed ISIS is responsible, and there was even a video of the terrorists committing the violent acts. One thing's for sure, Russian forces have seized the four men, and one of them has actually confessed that they were killing people, no matter who, for money. Yeah, so he was killing because he wanted money from a higher-up in ISIS.

13 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake in Hualien City, Taiwan

Another powerful earthquake has caused widespread damage leading to multiple casualties. It's Taiwan's strongest in 25 years.

14 Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

A relatively historic bridge had collapsed after a freak accident occurred. Video shows that a liner ship lost power and ended up crashing into the bridge. We have no idea about the six who are missing, and it is even worse for everyone else who lives and commutes as now they have to take alternative routes. Oh, and wouldn't you know it, conspiracy theorists are ALL OVER THIS for some ridiculous reason.

I'm still surprised something like that happened. What are the odds that the boat hits the bridge and it collapses almost instantly? There has to be more to the story than what we know. Thoughts and prayers to those affected by this tragedy

15 Death of Glynis Johns

Eight decades of being an actress for Glynis Johns. She lived up to 100.

16 Death of Akira Toriyama

This was such a huge loss for entertainment. His death was something we didn't see coming and was caused by a private battle with acute subdural hematoma. He will be remembered as the creator of the Dragon Ball franchise, which is among the biggest Manga and anime franchises of all time. R.I.P. (1955-2024).

His artwork is also in Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest, two great RPG franchises.

17 Benjamin Netanyahu Sabotages Chances for a Hostage Deal

Bibi doesn't want to make a hostage deal because he's afraid to upset demagogues like Ben-Gvir and Ron Dermer while justifying this war, but he's doing so for political fortune, which is disgusting. Ron Dermer said they plan to "thin out" Palestinians in the Gaza Strip "to a minimum."

Bibi wants to avoid prison for his ongoing corruption trial, and he shows little to no sympathy for the causalities of the war and the hostages, which he smeared the families of the hostages influenced by Ben-Gvir.

Hamas is still evil for wanting to choose terrorism and violence towards Israel for every decade and opportunity they get.

If we could ever get peace and get these hostages back as fast as possible, then we need to unpack much of this extremism.

18 MatPat Announces His Retirement The Game Theorists is a YouTube channel that centers around gaming. They have shows such as Game Theory, The Science of, Sidequesting and Digressing, Crossover, Game Change, Culture Shock, and A Brief History... read more

It's not comparable to wars, natural disasters, or deaths, but this was significant for YouTube. MatPat announced his retirement from his GameTheorists channel on March 9th to focus on his personal life. He felt he had done enough. Remember, there's only so much one can do in life.

19 Death of Lynja

An absolutely devastating loss for the TikTok and food community. The world lost the host of Cooking With Lynja to esophageal cancer. She was a legend in food and comedy entertainment, amassing over 15.3 million followers. Rest in peace (1956-2024).

20 Death of Carl Weathers

He was one of the biggest stars in cinema, known for his roles as Combat Carl in the Toy Story franchise as well as Al Dillon in Predator, along with his roles in Happy Gilmore and the Mandalorian. This was around 3 weeks after his 76th birthday.

21 Death of Kelvin Kiptum

This was such a devastating loss for sports. The first person to run the marathon in less than 2 hours 1 minute would've been competing at the Paris Summer Olympics, but he was killed in a car crash. He achieved the marathon time of 2 hours 35 seconds, making him the fastest marathon runner in history. R.I.P. to the G.O.A.T. (1999-2024).

22 Abdication of Margrethe II
23 Death of Adan Canto

He was too young and lost to appendix cancer. He was best known for portraying Sunspot in the 2014 superhero film X-Men: Days of Future Past, Paul Torres on the Fox drama series The Following, and AJ Menendez in the ABC prime-time series Blood and Oil. His last appearance was on The Cleaning Lady since 2022. Rest in peace (1981-2024).

24 Palword/Pokemon Controversies

This is liable to be on the "dumb items" part of my analysis, but even if that weren't the case, this has a very, very strange effect on social media online as well as the overall perception of video game design and what not. Palworld seems like a super fun game, but apparently, Pokemon die-hards think that it does nothing but be a total ripoff of their favorite franchise "but with guns" or other excuses. The designs of monsters are similar, but those who defend Palworld all say that it really is a fun game, and heck, I gotta agree with them! Just because you grew up playing Pokemon (some of you guys still stick to Generation 1) doesn't mean that any other monster-raising game is automatically terrible.

The sheer explosion of media outcry from die-hard Pokemon fans is what ultimately landed this as a worst thing, and it's still going as of this writing.

25 Death of Jonnie Irwin

He was the presenter of Channel 4's lifestyle programme A Place in the Sun from 2004 to 2021 as well as the BBC daytime programme Escape to the Country from 2010 to 2023. He lost a battle to lung cancer in his 50s. He was special for its kind. R.I.P. (1973-2024).
