This guy is amazing, sure, he killed a man and burnt a few churches, but it adds to the black metal euphoria-thing.

Classic. And you know it

83 Accept Accept Accept is a German heavy metal band from the town of Solingen, originally assembled by former vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, guitarist Wolf Hoffmann and bassist Peter Baltes.

They are invencible on stage, their sound is amazing, their set list is perfect, and the performing is awesome. Shall be at the top behind Judas Priest. - JR

This band should be in the top 20. - Rambles

Yes! I like them, and Udo's vocal range is excellent.

Grr! So cringe-inducing that they are on this list - jack2244

85 White Zombie White Zombie White Zombie was an American heavy metal band that formed in 1985. Based in New York City, White Zombie was originally a noise rock band, and was known for its later heavy metal-oriented sound.

If there were more records, he would definitely be higher on my list. Saw a few youtube videos, and they were pretty atrocious live, but the records are awesome!

Love rob zombie in his work. They should be in the 60s-70s not 160!

Spectacular

He is higher. I ran into him a few pages ago. I feel sorry for the individual running this thread. It's gone from a bonfire to a raging inferno, and is a great read to boot.

Rob must be higher!

Rob Zombie is amazing

What, 185 how is rob zombie not at least in the top 20

87 At the Gates At the Gates At the Gates is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, and a major progenitor of the Gothenburg sound

Yes, you should say more. Still influential today, even though they stubbornly refuse to release material and just play live.

At the Gates should be in the top ten easily...i guess a lot of young people is voting crappy band here... - ischan

88 Rise Against Rise Against Rise Against is an American hardcore punk band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1999. The band's current line-up comprises vocalist/rhythm guitarist Tim McIlrath, lead guitarist Zach Blair, bassist Joe Principe and drummer Brandon Barnes. They are known for popularizing punk.

Rise against is not a metal band, they're a punk band pure and simple, and a very good one at that.

Did they - or any other Punk band for that matter - have an impact on metal? If so, they're rightly here. If not, fair enough. I often look at Dead Kennedys track Drug Me and In God We Trust ep as influential for its hardcore aggression, and I know Sepultura cover them. Ponderous.

Guys, how could this band is not in the list! This band has all the power, riffs, vocals and lyrics. This is the best band and it is modern band. We should give them a credit for what they deserve.

Not metal. anyway I don't like their heavy songs. rather I prefer their soft songs more. - zxm

89 HammerFall HammerFall HammerFall is a Swedish heavy metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was formed in 1993 by ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak.

They are great! These folks should be in the top ten! I know they are Swedish but they rock, if you don't agree you have never heard them.

The best heavy metal band!

This list will be standing before everyone who has contributed to it have long passed away. It's a novel, not a list.

Hammerfall copied off of Iron Maiden and helloween, and I fall asleep listening Hammerfall.

90 Mercyful Fate Mercyful Fate Mercyful Fate was a Danish heavy metal band from Copenhagen, formed in 1981 by vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Hank Shermann.

Why are Mercyful Fate not even on the first page? They should at the VERY least be in the top 20.

We know that This website isn't trust worthy at all either by judging from the fact that Avenged Sevenfold is at the top 10 & mercyful fate is the top 229th or that dio is the 22nd

Look, this site is old school, hence Metallica, Slayer, Sabbath, Priest, Megadeth inside the top ten. Mercyful Fate only released 2 official albums and a couple of rare ep's. That doesn't mean they're not better than some inside the top ten-or-twenty, but when you're old school you have to grin and bear it.

Very underrated! - htoutlaws2012

Nu-metal? From memory? If so, they were borderline respectable. So long as they don't move past #400 then I think most metal fans would be happy.

These guys are literally, one of the best bands on this list... Along with the insightful lyrics, the amazing vocals, and great instumemtalization I'm gonna say they deserve top 25

Lol! So they're fans now scream in falsetto unison at their live shows, like King Diamond?

Pure grind. This band have kicked asses so many times that they're fans got castrated.

93 Sabaton Sabaton Sabaton is a power metal band from Falun, Sweden formed in 1999. The band's main lyrical themes are based on war and historical battles.

Many metal bands are good, but Sabaton is great because they teach you history. Most of their songs are about the history from 15 century to nowadays. Also they play well, it's another reason to choose this band.

They are way too low there. Sabaton MUST be on the, at least, top 25. They are one of the better known ones, and 40:1 is great. I'm actually Polish.

Seen them live 3 times at Sabaton Open Air and they're hilarious and great at catching the audience and that they sing about actual battles and people make me get goosebumps.

I don't have to study history too much, I can listen to Sabaton. Also they have lot of powerful songs...

94 Periphery Periphery Periphery is an American progressive metal band based in Washington, D.C., formed in 2005. They are known for their heavy, progressive sound which employs poly-rhythmic patterns and soaring melodies.

I tried my best with this mob, and the production values are great, the vocalist is great, the musicianship is great, and the songwriting is great. But yet, they suck! Why? Because they're like the Justin Bieber of metal. It's so saccharine and sickly that I can see more techno fans attending their shows than metal fans.

One of the best guitarists on the planet at the moment with some of the best phrasing I've heard in a long while. Massively proficient and all around better than most of the bands above on this list.
Not only is Bulb ridiculously talented himself, his production skills are second to none in the industry having worked on the first Animals As Leaders album and the new Veil Of Maya album.

So excited to see these guys live next month! All the members are so ridiculously talented (being a drummer, I now look up to Matt Halpern as a major influence) and their songs are so fantastic, melodic, heavy and enjoyable! Check out Scarlet, Alpha, Make Total Destroy and Icarus Lives if you wanna get started on them!

What I can't believe is that there are bands such as AC/DC, Bon Jovi etc ahead of bands like this. They are also great bands, I agree I listen to them myself but explain to me how they are metal, they are rock guys.
Anyway Periphery are great, listen to so many songs try, Insomnia, Make Total Destroy, Scarlet, Buttersnips etc its true Djent and Prog Metal!

95 Breaking Benjamin Breaking Benjamin Breaking Benjamin is a American post-grunge/alternative metal band formed in 1998. Amazing band... So underrated its sad. Each song is great, hope they get off hiatus. Good luck Ben

I wish people heard more of breaking benjamin. There is nothing quite like their music and bejnamin burnley is an amazing singer.

I LOVE this band! Ben has an AWESOME voice and I can't help but LOVE his screams! Very talented!

Used to be my favorite band, and again not metal hard rock - Ihategwyn310

96 GWAR GWAR Gwar, often styled as GWAR, is an American heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia, United States, in 1984, composed of and operated by a frequently rotating line-up of musicians, artists and filmmakers collectively known as Slave Pit Inc.

Awesome band. Made funny songs with heavy riffs and broke the barrier of punk, thrash, metal and speed metal. Should be in the top 25

I agree! Piledriver did a similar thing, though GWAR outlived them. I chuck 'em on every now and again.

Codename: Kids Next Door brought me here.

97 Death Angel Death Angel Death Angel is an American thrash metal band from Daly City, California, initially active from 1982 to 1991 and again since 2001. Death Angel has released seven studio albums, two demo tapes, one box set and two live albums.

These guys belong in the top 10 for sure (but I put them in the number one spot). Even when they were teenagers on their debut album them blew most of these other bands away. - jimocracy

Here! Here! A 16 year-old drummer on one of the finest thrash debuts in 'The Ultraviolence'. Progressive thrash with 'Frolic Through The Park', and knocked it out the park with 'Act III'. Only tragedy stopped them in their tracks. Like early Metal Church, they could have been anything...

Death Angel doesn't get the respect the deserve. Their a really good band that came out of the Bay area Thrash scene and their last album Relentless Retrubution is awesome. Ultra Violence, and Act I are trash classics in my opinion and Death Angel needs to be shown a little more love.

Bull that they aren't in the top 25. Rob is super fast and their newest album was so fast and complex that they should be fully redeemed by now.

98 Underoath Underoath

These guys definitely deserve to be higher on this list

Underoath did actually have a good album called Cries of the Past, before they became that godawful, non-metal, whiny band we know them as today. But one good album does not equal a good band.

Heck they are #1 in my opinion. Sooo cool. Aaron Gillespie is an awesome drummer
