I don't think Sid was really a bad kid, just misunderstood. I think he did what he did because he had no friends, an overactive imagination, not a very good home life or parents, and he had no way of knowing that the toys he tortured were alive. He's actually a sympathizable character when you think about it. And does change greatly after the first movie.
