Top 10 Pokemon Boss Battles in Pokemon Games

This is the list for the top 10 Pokémon boss battles. This includes battles with a main character, not any normal NPC.

The main character includes gym leaders, rivals, champions, and others.

The Top Ten
  1. Red

Red is a Pokémon Trainer from Pallet Town in the Kanto region. He is the first playable character in the Pokémon video game series, debuting in the original Generation I games.

He has since reappeared in various Pokémon media, including the Generation III remakes FireRed and LeafGreen, which are... read more

I think the best thing about this fight is the implications - think about it. When you face him in G/S, he's become so obsessed with Pokémon that he's isolated himself. He's gone without human contact for years. In effect, by beating him, you're actually saving him. He returns to the world of humans so that future trainers may battle him.

In effect, you help him do what he should be doing - facing off against other trainers, not sitting on an icy mountaintop for years. Granted, none of the other Red battles were any good - in my opinion, they all sucked. But it's the fact he's there that counts.

Red is the ultimate boss. It's not just the fact that he has the highest-leveled Pokemon, but also who he is as a trainer. The battle is held in the harshest conditions. Just being at the peak of Mt. Silver gives you an overwhelming rush of passion and energy. Once you're in that moment, and once the music hits, you're sucked out of reality.

You're facing the trainer that you once were. Red doesn't have to say anything, being the silent protagonist, which adds to his mysteriousness. Red has the deepest passion for Pokemon out of everyone and is a true trainer. He doesn't even use Full Restores. He battles like a true trainer should.

Also, it's the Champion of Johto versus the Champion of Kanto. Two champions head-to-head. No other battle can top that. Battling Red gives you a feeling like no other. Even when the battle is over, win or lose, you know you faced the greatest boss trainer ever.

  2. Cynthia

  3. N (Champion)

  4. Cyrus (Distortion World)

  5. N (Nimbasa City)

  6. Clair

Clair is the Gym Leader of the Blackthorn Gym in the Pokémon games Pokémon Gold and Silver. She specializes in Dragon-type Pokémon and is notable for using a powerful Kingdra as her signature Pokémon. Clair is also the cousin of Lance, a member of the Elite Four, and appears in later Pokémon titles and... read more

  7. Blue (Champion)

Yeah, I agree with the last comment, this Pokémon battle is downright famous in the eyes of gamers. Why is it this low?

ARE YOU SERIOUS! Nobody votes for practically one of the best boss battles in the history of gaming! Sure, it's not the best Pokémon battle of all time when it comes to fighting Red, but are you kidding!

You think N's fight in Nimbasa, Norman, Wally, and even flipping Iris as Champion are better than the world-phenomenal video gaming boss fight known as your final fight with your badass - and I admit, ass - rival of the first frigging game of POKÉMON!

God, that was a mouthful, but the point still stands. This is my favorite Pokémon (tied with Cynthia) and my 4th favorite boss battle in video gaming history. I just can't believe that Blue is this low. It's absolutely absurd and downright crazy. Please vote for it.

  8. Ultra Necrozma

This was pretty much the only difficult boss fight in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, besides the abomination that is Totem Togedemaru. When I first saw it, I noticed how ridiculously gigantic it was compared to my character. It looked like it could easily obliterate me with its godly powers, which were clearly strong enough to block out all the light from an entire planet.

The music was very intimidating, and I saw that it was level 60, ten levels higher than the Dawn Wings Lunala I had faced just moments earlier. It was even a higher level than the Pokémon League in the later game. It felt as if you had to face Mewtwo before tackling the Pokémon League in Kanto.

Even though my Raichu was super overpowered (level 58, since I had been grinding EXP points throughout the game), it got one-shotted by Dragon Pulse. In the end, almost all of my Pokémon were either one-shotted by Photon Geyser or Dragon Pulse. I didn't know that Ultra Necrozma had the Psychic/Dragon typing, meaning that fire, water, electric, or grass attacks would only do half damage.

I only defeated Ultra Necrozma on my second try because of all the Max Potions and Revives I spammed to wear away at Necrozma's Dragon Pulse and Photon Geyser. No wonder this thing has base stats higher than Arceus and only falls short of Mega Mewtwo (X or Y).

  9. Steven Stone

  10. Rival (Pokémon Yellow)

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Volo & Giratina (Spear Pillar)

  13. ?

    Volo (Final Encounter)

Was downright shaking when the music started playing. And how is a 6 vs. 8 fair?

  14. The Contenders
  15. Whitney

Whitney is the Gym Leader of the Goldenrod Gym in Pokémon Gold and Silver. She specializes in Normal-type Pokémon and is especially known for her Miltank, which is infamous for its strength and difficulty. Trainers who defeat Whitney receive the Plain Badge.... read more

  16. Wally

Wally is one of the most interesting characters in the entire franchise. I call him the Gohan of Pokémon because he starts pretty weak until the final bout with him, where he could destroy you if you're not ready for him. Also, that ORAS theme though!

  17. Ghetsis (Black and White)

He's hands down the best antagonist the games have ever seen. Right after he drops some absolutely cold-blooded lines about how he only adopted N to use him as a pawn, and then reveals his end goal to rule through force by being the only one with Pokémon, you then need to battle him.

Emotions are running high as you want to stop him and make him pay for being such a manipulative scumbag, and then he comes out with a very challenging and menacing team, with his Hydreigon probably being the second most memorable ace Pokémon of a boss behind Cynthia's Garchomp.

My only criticism of the battle is that the song didn't pump enough of a threatening and high-intensity atmosphere into the battle, and kind of just gets tuned out as a low rumble in the background. That problem was fixed in the sequels though, replacing it with an awesome remix of the original theme.

  18. Norman

  19. Iris (Champion)

Iris is a character from the Pokémon video games Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. In the original White version, she serves as the Gym Leader of Opelucid City. In the sequels, Black 2 and White 2, she becomes the Champion of the Unova region, and she specializes in Dragon-type Pokémon.... read more

It was so exciting, realizing she was Champion!

  20. Hapu

  21. Wallace

  22. Drake (Dragon Master)

  23. Juan

Now Juan CAN be difficult simply because in Emerald there are very few places to train, and often teams are under-leveled. Not to mention, Juan's Pokémon, especially Kingdra, have very few weaknesses.
