Top 10 Ways that Serena from the Pokemon Anime Could've Been a Much Better Character
When a companion travels beside Ash for an entire region, you want her story to feel like it belongs to her instead of constantly circling the same few character beats. Serena had enough personality and potential to be much more compelling, and if you think XY left too much of that potential unused, there is plenty here to debate.

Drop the Amourshipping bait
This Amourshipping thing has destroyed her character. (These words might seem caring towards her, but I do hate her a lot, more because she's boring as hell and her character's got no depth or complexity.)
And besides, Amourshipping is pure trash. It's forced, unnatural, boring, and one-sided. The main question is: where's the chemistry? Answer: nowhere.
She never points out his flaws and has his heroic image in her mind. Neither do they tease each other. They just act nicey-nice to each other. And since she never fights with him (again due to her stupid crush), he also doesn't pay much attention to her.
Everything about her, from her crush to her dream, is so fake and impractical. She's got nothing to do with Pokémon. She just shows herself off by wearing pretty dresses.
However, she's practically the same case as Brianna from the AG series. Here, she gets a chance to travel with Drew in the form of Ash, which would never actually happen to her. Of course.

Have her goal be more about Pokémon than herself
-
Have her contribute more to the group
During the epic showdown with Ash, Alan, Diantha, and the Kalos Gym Leaders, including Clemont, trying to save Kalos and the world from the thing I forgot what it was, Serena literally does nothing but stand there on the sidelines along with Marin and Bonnie. If it were Misty, Dawn, May, or Iris, they would have helped them try to stop it.
-
Have her get a goal and development much earlier in the series
-
Have Serena develop a crush on Ash much later on in the series or drop it altogether
Ugh, please no. No crush on Ash, thank you. Even after her crush on Ash pissed us off, it's something she shouldn't have, whether it's early or later in the series. I suggest dropping it altogether.

Have her be a warrior
-
Have her pay a lot more attention to Clemont and Bonnie
All it was was Ash, Ash, and Ash, with a little bit of Bonnie action.
She nearly ignored Clemont.
-
Have her have a better reason to cut her hair and change her appearance or drop it altogether
-
Have Serena not kiss him, just walk away, and just say goodbye on the final episode
As memorable as the kiss was, it was completely forced, and people take it as Amourshipping being canon, which is, of course, false because if it was, Ash would have kissed her back. But he doesn't. He just kind of stands there awkwardly, like most boys his age would, confused.
That kiss was just stupid. Like, she just HAD to do it before she said goodbye with her desperate self. Ash didn't even acknowledge it.
Ash, you could have just pushed Serena away or just told her not to kiss you. Come on, you ten-year-old Ash.
-
Don't have her be a walking stereotype
Nothing bad about being girly. It's just the way Serena says girls should always appear to look pretty and dedicates her life around a boy that I find very stupid.

?
Make her able to handle hard stuff rather than force guys to be in love with her
-
?
Make her goal as a Sky Trainer like her manga counterpart from the Pokémon Adventures manga
Guys you should check out her manga counterpart. It's better than game serena and anime serena.
-
Don't have her be defined by Ash and constantly cater to him
-
Have her interact with her Pokémon more often
