Out of all the characters on this list, Buck is the only one I'd quantify as a legitimately bad person. The others are all insane or murderous. After his son makes a fool out of himself, Buck attempts to distance himself from his son to keep his social standing. That is HORRIBLE parenting. It gets even worse when Buck suddenly supports his son after he becomes the town hero, and then abandons him AGAIN after he attempts to warn of the invasion.
Yes, I know he eventually realizes he's never there for his son, and stands by him against the red alien in the ship, but that doesn't make any of the things he did okay. Buck was a surprisingly mean spirited character, even going so far as to call his own son an embarrassment. What a jerk.
