Best Things About Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a great addition to the series, not going to lie.By making Ramona the central focus, it gives her more depth as a character. This is something I can get behind, and it also illustrates how similar she and Scott are as people, which I appreciate. Sure, Scott's not as present, but it's a nice change of pace.
I appreciate that it had a different direction going for it. Much like Spider-Man's backstory, it would've gotten old to see the same thing over and over again. It's something I can get behind, and this helps it stand out from the movie. Aside from it also being a Netflix anime, but I digress.
The music's pretty solid, although the same can be said about the 2010 movie as well. It's got the typical flair and charm you'd expect while also adding some interesting new ideas. Granted, I'm not too familiar with Tantric as an artist, but I dig the new Sex Bob-Omb songs. Those are great.
I'd argue they give stronger performances in this anime than they did in the movie. Honestly, everyone sounds a lot more energetic, lively, and improved. It helps that they also had experience and good direction to strengthen their performances, so props all around.
One of my biggest gripes with the movie is that the romance, in general, along with the pacing, was rushed. They didn't seem like they cared for each other all that much, like they do in the comics. Here, though? There's this genuine interest that feels realistic enough to work. Giving credit where credit is due, so yeah, enough said.
It captures the charm of the comic pretty well. Granted, there are some obvious differences in terms of design, but it's pretty sleek-looking animation. I don't know if it's the best-animated thing to exist, but it does look very impressive and feels very close to the comic's unique style, which is all you can ask for in a Scott Pilgrim adaptation.
There are a few more characters from the comics that you see in the show. For example, Scott's brother Lawrence has a cameo, Hollie also makes an appearance, and Scott's parents are present in Takes Off. I think if you squint hard enough, you might also notice a Lisa Miller cameo too. I can appreciate this.
Kind of self-explanatory, but it captures a lot more of the comic's style without directly rehashing the same story of Scott fighting seven exes to win over Ramona. I feel like it's a lot stronger than the movie in nearly every regard, honestly.
All of the characters sound legit and realistic. Considering how it has the same cast, along with a few new additions, it balances things out. They give great performances, which I commend them for, because it gives the show a ton of charisma.
Writing for a show can make or break it. In the case of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, it makes it work as a concept. Granted, there are some things that might be questionable or baffling, but overall, it's a solid story. If they do make a second season, which I doubt they will, I'd be on board with it.
