Top Ten European Alternative Rock Songs of the 21st Century

There is no strict definition of what's alternative rock. It may also include songs bordering on indie rock, pop punk, emo, metalcore and similar. But I personally wouldn't include full punk songs by bands such as Die Ärzte or Die Toten Hosen. Even though some of their softer songs are on the border, they are deeply rooted in the German punk scene and their biggest artists. Pop punk is okay though.
The Top Ten
1 Don't Jump - Tokio Hotel
2 An Dich - Silbermond
3 Forever Yours - Sunrise Avenue
4 Perfekte Welle - Juli

You can't measure the impact this song had on German music landscape in 2004. They made both German language lyrics and indie rock (even though they describe themselves as alternative, their music affected indie more than alternative) ten times more popular, going so far that sales of English language dance pop would decrease, which dominated the German charts before. In the meantime, this style blew dance pop off the map completely. Juli themselves never had any other song remotely as successful, but famous and brilliant artists like Silbermond, Casper or Jennifer Rostock owe their careers to Juli, who started the hype that was the start of their success. This radical change of mainstream, which still goes on as of 2017, 13 years later, was also dubbed as "Neue Deutsche Perfekte Welle", a portmanteau of the 80s genre "Neue Deutsche Welle" and Juli's hit "Perfekte Welle".
