Top 10 Dumbest Goth Stereotypes
You're not goth. You don't wear black velvet capes, you don't write poetry by candlelight, and your music playlist probably leans more Top 40 than Bauhaus. Still, you know lazy assumptions when you hear them, and goths catch a wild amount of nonsense. It's like people see dark eyeliner and suddenly forget how logic works.
Goths get boxed in constantly. People hear "goth" and their brains sprint straight to devil worship, graveyards, or someone sulking in the rain because life is pain or whatever cliché is trending that week. The truth? Goths are one of the most misunderstood subcultures out there, and a lot of the stuff people believe about them isn't just wrong. It's laughably off-base.
So here is your chance to call out the worst of the worst. The dumbest stereotypes. The ones that make you roll your eyes so hard they practically leave orbit.

They are just going through a phase
The other people who voted for this have the right idea, but they're still wrong to an extent. Goth can be a phase for some people, but for others, they're just into goth rock, deathrock, darkwave, etc. because they are, and they have no problem basing their fashion around it either. Goth itself is not a lifestyle, but a subculture. If anything, "gothic" would be the lifestyle, not "goth."
Lastly, the only components of the subculture are music, fashion, and arguably, aesthetics. Literature, art, and film have no place and aren't what make you goth. They're separate from the subculture. Gothic is a style and is completely different from the 80s post-punk scene.

They are Satan worshipers
I am a Christian! Just because I dress in mostly all black and act a little different and, to some people, weird, doesn't mean I'm a terrible person who worships Satan. I believe in God and that He loves me and saves me from Satan.
I am a Christian! I hate it when people think I'm a bad person or that I worship Satan because of how I act and look! I believe in God and that He loves me and saves me from Satan!
I don't have a religion, but if I did, it would be kindness and generosity.

They are the same as emos, punks, and scene kids
Some people call Billie Eilish goth and emo, yet she talked about them like they're the same thing.
Unless things have changed and she knows the differences now.
Goths, emos, punks, and scenes are not the same thing (well, except emos and scenes are the same thing, but the difference between them is that emos are depressed and scenes are too happy). Goths came out of the punk subculture and have different music genres like post-punk, goth rock, goth metal, and symphonic goth metal. Punks have their own subculture where they listen to all punk genre music. Emos listen to post-hardcore, emo, and screamo. I can go all day on the differences.
-
They are all suicidal and self-harming
Heck no! Some might have, but all I know, including myself, don't.
-
They are mentally unstable
-
They hate everything
No, they like gothic rock and other things. I love dinosaurs, sandwiches, chocolate pudding, blueberry pie, night ambience, my family, nature, video games, fireflies, and hugs.
I know someone who is a goth and she loves puppies, rainbows, unicorns, kittens, unipugs, and fluffy horses wearing plastic unicorn hats dancing on rainbows!
No! I love my family. I love my friends. There are few things I actually hate, but I do hate all of these stereotypes!
-
They are obsessed with death
Um, no. Just no. I'm not goth myself, but just because they look all dark inside doesn't mean they go suicidal.
-
They do drugs
I've heard of smoking cloves, but I don't smoke anything! No illegal drugs! However, I drink a single alcoholic drink (I don't get how that's legal, though) not more than three times in a month. Not to get drunk, but to try different ones. The variety is huge compared to non-alcoholic ones, unfortunately. I don't even enjoy how it feels to drink them, and the booze ruins the flavour.
This is a stereotype that follows most groups that don't look like athletes or popular girls.
The goth subculture has nothing to do with drugs. Although it is dark, it's also artistic.
-
They are always grumpy and sad
No, I am silly and like smiling at my loved ones.
-
They only listen to rock music
-
?
They hate boyish boys
-
?
They hate girly girls
-
They like kinky things
Why are we singled out on this? Pretty much everyone is!
-
They only like other goths
No, I like everyone who is nice and not creepy. I don't know very many goths at all in real life. I'm too shy to make goth friends online.
I can't hang out with other goths because I don't know where they are.
I have so many friends who aren't goth and I am. So what?!
-
They are loners
-
They are weird
Just because we're different from most people doesn't mean we're weird.
They are not weird. They are dark, but not weird.
-
They only like the dark side
I love the sun, but if it's night, I'll embrace the beauty of the darkness too.
I like to wear dark clothes, meshes, and intricate patterns over pale clothes for a sophisticated, chic contrast.
-
They shop at Hot Topic
Hot Topic doesn't exist in every country.
-
They are all Wiccans
Wicca is a religion. Wiccans are as worthy as Christians or Buddhists or Unitarian Universalists, and not all goths are Wiccan.
-
They only wear black
People use the words goth, emo, and metal in YouTube videos just because there's black in them, and it stops me from finding goth and gothic metal music.
Actually, no. Some goths do wear other colors. Most of the time, they will mix other colors with black for their fashion.
-
They are sociopaths
-
They won't get a "normal" job
Is lifeguarding a 'normal' job? Because a lot of people are surprised when I say I am.
-
They are homicidal
-
They read or watch Twilight
Nah, Twilight is creepy, and I don't mean the spooky sense of the word.
I haven't even watched the movies or read the books.
-
They like Emily the Strange
-
They had a goth friend who influenced them to become goth
I knew no one who was goth when I was turning goth, but everyone says I'm this way because I fell into the wrong crowd.
I'll let you know I found goth music at 8 and carried on without anyone assisting.
I mainly only had internet influences and my sister. But no, not friends.
