Top Ten Sports Teams that Disappeared

A lot of teams have stood the test of time and have became staples for the American Pro Sports communities. They are iconic and are beloved by their fans. Some teams, however, disappear and their fans lose their teams.
The items in this list have been selected by the author of the list for you to vote and comment on.
The Top Ten
1 Ottawa Senators The Ottawa Senators (French: Sénateurs d'Ottawa) are a professional ice hockey team based in Ottawa, Ontario. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. The Senators play their home games at the 18,652-seat Canadian Tire Centre, which opened in 1996 as the Palladium.

Although they are back, the OG Senators were truly something special. They won 4 championships in the 1920's. The team just like most others, was defeated by the Depression and since Ottawa is relatively a small market team.

2 Seattle SuperSonics The Seattle SuperSonics, commonly known as the Sonics, were an American professional basketball team based in Seattle, Washington.

The SuperSonics had 40 years of love and support from the fans in Seattle. Then the owner moved the team to Oklahoma City and the fans are still waiting to get their team back.

3 Houston Oilers

The Oilers were pretty good throughout their lifespan winning the first 2 AFL championships. The Oilers were in the Houston until 1997 when they moved to Tennessee and changed the name to the Titans.

Probably one of the more notable franchises that are now been defunct for nearly 2 decades. They expanded into two different teams the Titans, and Texans which would be the 32 team setup you see today.

At least it didn't take long for Houston to get another team.

Easily one of the most notable teams to disappear

4 Canton Bulldogs The Canton Bulldogs were a professional American football team based in Canton, Ohio. They played in the Ohio League from 1903 to 1906 and 1911 to 1919, and in the National Football League from 1920 to 1927. The Bulldogs were NFL champions in 1922 and 1923.

Canton, Ohio is the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and it makes sense why. The Bulldogs were one of the OG members of the APFA also known as the NFL today, and won the first 2 championships with monstrous undefeated seasons. In 1926 the team had 22 teams and they had to cut some teams to save money. Canton was one of the teams that didn't make it.

5 Houston Aeros

They were an elite team in the now dead WHA. The Aeros won back-to-back championships in the '70's and were on top of the Western Conference 4 years. They never had a losing season in their franchise history and folded after the league disbanded.

6 Providence Grays

They had some of the best baseball in the early days. They won a butt ton of games and even won the 1884 World Series. The team then struggled financially and folded.

7 Frankford Yellow Jackets

The Yellow Jackets had a reputation of a mean team with power. They were invited to play in the NFL and went 11-2-1. They would then go on to win the first championship in Philadelphia football history. Unfortunately just like the Steam Rollers, they would fold due to the Depression and stadium faults.

8 Kentucky Colonels

The Colonels were a superb franchise in the ABA. They won the most games in ABA history and then the merger came. The NBA merged with four teams and the Colonels were not selected so they died out.

9 Syracuse Nationals

The Nationals never missed the playoffs in their time as a franchise. They were always a contender in their 14 season history even winning a championship. They would then move to Philadelphia and became the 76ers.

10 Providence Steam Roller

The Steam Roller's joined the league in 1925 and only finished under .500 twice in their life span. They even won a championship in their 6 year lifespan. Fans lost interest in the team as the Great Depression kicked in.
