Best Movie Sequels (Second Movie Only)

What are the best second movies of any series? Star Wars counts as two separate trilogies.
The Top Ten
The Dark Knight

Batman Begins was a great introduction, but it wouldn't be Batman without the menacing and truly terrifying Joker, portrayed by Heath Ledger.

Close call for me between The Dark Knight, T2, and Aliens. But I can't get over Heath Ledger's portrayal of the Joker.

I knew it. This is 100% better than Batman Begins.

The Empire Strikes Back

This, I have to say, is the best sequel of all time. I know there are films out there like The Dark Knight, T2, Return of the King, and others, but I thought The Empire Strikes Back was amazing. I love how it has a much darker tone than the first film, which was also great, but I don't think it's as good as this one. This is also one of my favorite movies.

I like the way this movie tries to appeal to both kids and adults, which can be hard to do sometimes. However, it turned out that both kids and adults loved it. What I also like about this film is that it challenges kids to get through the darker parts of the story. A lot of kids' films that came out around that time did this as well. Jim Henson, the creator of films and shows like The Muppets, Sesame Street, The Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth, surprisingly worked on this film - he did the original puppet for Yoda. I think I read somewhere that both he and Don Bluth said it's not healthy for anyone, especially kids, to never be scared, and that, I think, is a really good message.

George Lucas and Jim Henson worked on another film together called Labyrinth, which came out just a few years later. It's good, but anyway, back to The Empire Strikes Back. Another thing I like is that there are a lot of unexpected scenes, like Han Solo and Princess Leia - rest in peace, Carrie Fisher - who would have seen that coming? And that scene where Luke finds out Darth Vader is his father, the I am your father moment, has to be one of the most famous lines in movie history.

Yeah, it's a really dark and gritty film, but that's why I love it.

Terminator 2

This is a great movie and one of my all-time favorites. It is better than the first (which was also very good). But what is New Moon doing here? It should be on worst sequels.

My favorite movie ever. Though the first was a classic, this is even better. Legendary.

Terminator was great, but it was missing a lot. T2 solved most everything.

Toy Story 2

I like this one over number 3. Out of the 3 this one is the most underrated.

Way better than the rest. The first is great, but the second one is the best. The third, ehh... and I don't know how the 4th one will do?

Not as good as the first, but still great!

Aliens

Absolutely, by far, the most fantastic sci-fi action. Ripley is easily the best and baddest female heroine ever.

Should be in the top 3 at least. It's definitely a better sequel than Dead Man's Chest, Toy Story 2, or Superman II.

Sigourney Weaver, James Cameron, machine guns, and tons of aliens. This one is a shoo-in.

The Lord Of The Rings - The Two Towers

Battle of Helm's Deep still holds up. This movie has aged really well.

A masterpiece created from a book that is even better than the awesome writings of Tolkien.

Every movie in the trilogy is perfect. But I think The Two Towers is the darkest LOTR movie.

The Godfather II

You can't be serious to put The Godfather at number 5. It is the first-ever sequel to win Best Picture.

The fact that it is nearly on par with the original shows how good the movie is.

Robert De Niro as Vito just stole the heart away. Best sequel ever!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Probably the best of the Captain America franchise in my opinion.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

I have the drunken swagger walk down pat. Captain Jack Sparrow is the best of the best. This is my all-time favorite movie. Awesome job, Johnny Depp. I just have to meet you one day. You did one hell of a job.

A severely underrated movie overall but definitely an underrated sequel. I am glad to see it made the top ten.

Spider-Man 2

Better than the original with greater characters and a stronger plot.

This movie came out when I was about ten years old, and it still amazes me in its quality. Good acting, good cinematography, good special effects, and above all else, a compelling plot.

The Newcomers

? Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
? Sonic the Hedgehog 2
The Contenders
Back to the Future Part II

The first movie is undeniably an all-time classic, which has more class than any movie from the 00s. However, Part 2 delivers even more of a punch when you have to deal with a time paradox in an alternate timeline. You can't beat these sequels!

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Shrek 2

It may not be my favourite second film, but I voted for it anyway because, unlike most other sequels, I thought it was way better and more original than its predecessor. Unfortunately, the franchise went way downhill after that.

It was definitely better than the first. It had a lot of things in it that the first film never did. It was more expansive with the characters, and it showed more story. The music was perfect, especially songs like "Holding Out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler.

This one is the best Shrek title. In my opinion, it is way better than How to Train Your Dragon 2 and the Boss Baby.

The Wrath Of Khan
The Lost World - Jurassic Park
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Heck yes! Why isn't this above stupid Star Wars?

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

While it's not nearly as good as the first Home Alone movie, Home Alone 2 is definitely a lot better than its successors.

This movie was as good as the original. Too bad that this was the last Home Alone movie that was great.

Almost as good and classic as the first. And, in some ways, better.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Batman Returns
Evil Dead II
Spider-Man: Far From Home
The Bourne Supremacy
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
