Top 10 Things Christians Should Avoid Saying

Sticks and stones can break bones, but words can cause damage in a metaphysical way. These are things righteous believers in the one true God should know not to say, but even the most righteous folks in the world slip up with their tongues from time to time.

This list is not intended to be patronizing. In fact, I myself am guilty of saying most of these, some of them many, many times. I am especially guilty of number one while I'm in a state of wrathfulness, and number ten during my years of adolescence.

I made this list simply to remind myself and my fellow Christians that we should utter statements and questions that build up good things and tear down harmful things, rather than vice versa.

Without further ado, here is the list.
The Top Ten
The name of God in vain

This one's a classic. We should only use His powerful name in high regard, and uttering it in reaction to something that frustrates you downplays the name of God's exquisite divinity.

Someone should go to, burn, or rot in Hell

The Bible tells us not to hate our enemies, but to love them, and given how horrible a place Hell is, this is just about the most hateful thing you could say about anyone.

Comparisons to God, Heaven, Satan, or Hell

Nothing compares to any of these, as they are the only entities that are pure good, pure bliss, pure evil, and pure agony respectively.

Making these comparisons also could imply that you have some other gods before the one true God, which is what the first Commandment explicitly tells us not to do.

"It's impossible."

Hmmm... are you sure about that? Because Matthew 19:26 says quite the opposite! "With God, all things are possible."

"Luck"

If you believe in God, you should be mindful of the fact that it's never luck. It's always God's help and blessings.

"Karma"

As Christians, we don't believe in this Hindu concept. However, we do believe in something similar: the wrath of God. It will not pass over anyone. All of our sins will be judged.

"God doesn't give people more than they can handle."

Yeah, try telling Job that.

This notion is a misinterpretation of the verse 1 Corinthians 10:13. If God won't allow more than we can handle to happen to us, then why do people weep? Why do people suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder? Why do people commit suicide?

Our suffering is not God's fault, that much is true, but although God will never give you more than you can handle, this corruption-stricken world certainly can. And so can Hell.

Anything that implies belief in astrology

Astrology, on top of being pseudoscience, is also sinful, as people who believe in it try to determine their personalities from something that is not of God. There is even a verse that calls out astrologers by name.

"Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
Behold, they shall be as stubble. The fire shall burn them. They shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it." - Isaiah 47:13-14

Someone is in or is going to Heaven or Hell

You don't know that. Only God truly knows the content of their heart.

"My life sucks."

Maybe you are genuinely suffering right now, but they don't say "count your blessings" for nothing! If you're reading this, you could be struggling really badly right now and wanting nothing more or less than to just perish. But know this: you're not alone. God is with you, even if you don't believe in Him.

No matter how adamant you are in your lack of belief, you could still become a believer. You don't know what His plans are. Not even the most faithful, righteous, and knowledgeable about their faith Christian knows a fraction of God's grand plan.

I pray things get better for you and God fills your life with so many blessings that you go from fully convinced that He isn't real to impossible to convince that He's not real.
