Top 10 Rock Covers Which are Better Than the Original Songs

The Top Ten

1 All Along the Watchtower - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Dylan tried to cover hendrix version of his own song - waldo

Tried? He said that Hendrix' take was more like what he'd originally imagined. Then he recreated his version incorporating a more electric, harder rock style to better capture the atmosphere. And he did it very well.
Further, Dylan has constantly re-arranged and altered most of his songs. He's recorded several live versions of this one, and he's known for making changes one night to the next during his tours. - Billyv

I definitely agree with this.

4 The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana

I prefer The Original David Bowie version of this one, maybe it's just my opinion. But I do agree with the other covers off of this album.

5 Twist and Shout - The Beatles

Pretty much anything The Beatles covered was an improvement over the original. - BKAllmighty

They recorded it in one take - waldo

6 Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Guns N' Roses

I see 2 people already disagreed but to me this version is better - it definitely has better instrumentation and better vocals. - Metal_Treasure

Yet it somewhat distorts the intent of the song - it wouldn't have fit the purpose of the original recording as well.
It's very good and adds elements that make it worthwhile. And it's a respectful cover. But - like other songs listed here - it isn't "better". The vocals are very good and stylistic, but they aren't "better" either. Dylan's convey the appropriate weariness and resigned acceptance of the character, as well as the setting. Axl's seem to carry more anguish and anger, perhaps a perspective of someone younger. - Billyv

Different and interesting take - but it's not "better". - Billyv

Hehe. Nice joke - 445956

I can respect MJ for have gathered such a large fanbase, but this song isn't good. I like Beat It, but the metal version of this song is just more tolerant. - SoldierOfFortune

I’d prefer the original even though I’m a metal head myself, lol - KingSlayer93316

19 Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Nah, I disagree. I like the idea of having a slap bass riff throughout the song, but otherwise, I think Stevie Wonder did it better. Especially in the vocals department. - Gg2000

It might be soft-folk rock, but its not better than the original.

Technically, this is alternative soft-folk rock, so it counts. - 445956

27 The Sound of Silence - Disturbed

One of the best covers ever!
it makes the hair stand up on arms when I listen to it

Umm... I disagree here - vocal harmonies are the most beautiful thing in the original and I miss them in the cover. - Metal_Treasure

Absolutely ridiculous claim - Billyv

The original is to flowery for me, but this guy's voice is brimming with emotion. - SoldierOfFortune

The original is intended to convey detachment and alienation, somewhat void of emotion. The harmonies are still musically beautiful amidst the depiction of decay - Billyv

28 Bohemian Rhapsody - Panic! at the Disco

Never have I seen something so wrong in my life. Bohemian Rhapsody is Queen's song, and Queen's version is 1 billion times better. No offense to Panic at The Disco anyone who thinks this version is better is a fanboy.

This has got to be a joke!

No - waldo

37 Live is a Highway - Rascal Flatts

This is a good cover but vocals are kinda cheesy compared to the original. Overall, the original has more energy and raw rocking power (which I like). The cover is more mainstream-ish and this doesn't please me. - Metal_Treasure
