Top 10 Rock Covers Which are Better Than the Original Songs

The Top Ten

1 All Along the Watchtower - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Dylan tried to cover hendrix version of his own song - waldo

Tried? He said that Hendrix' take was more like what he'd originally imagined. Then he recreated his version incorporating a more electric, harder rock style to better capture the atmosphere. And he did it very well.
Further, Dylan has constantly re-arranged and altered most of his songs. He's recorded several live versions of this one, and he's known for making changes one night to the next during his tours. - Billyv

I definitely agree with this. - somekindofaguy

2 Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - The Doors
3 Twist and Shout - The Beatles

Pretty much anything The Beatles covered was an improvement over the original. - BKAllmighty

They recorded it in one take - waldo

4 Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm

I can respect MJ for have gathered such a large fanbase, but this song isn't good. I like Beat It, but the metal version of this song is just more tolerant. - SoldierOfFortune

Not true. the Michael Jackson version will always be better. - awesomedp900

5 Summertime Blues - Blue Cheer

It might be just me but I think the original one is better. But Parchman Farm, I can agree with. - Undistinguished

6 Proud Mary - Ike & Tina Turner

Originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival - Metal_Treasure

7 Whiskey in the Jar - Metallica

Can we just add the whole album? - EliHbk

8 Eleanor Rigby - Vanilla Fudge

No. Sorry. This list item is about as substantiated as the 'Elvis is alive' myth. - BKAllmighty

9 Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Guns N' Roses

I see 2 people already disagreed but to me this version is better - it definitely has better instrumentation and better vocals. - Metal_Treasure

Yet it somewhat distorts the intent of the song - it wouldn't have fit the purpose of the original recording as well.
It's very good and adds elements that make it worthwhile. And it's a respectful cover. But - like other songs listed here - it isn't "better". The vocals are very good and stylistic, but they aren't "better" either. Dylan's convey the appropriate weariness and resigned acceptance of the character, as well as the setting. Axl's seem to carry more anguish and anger, perhaps a perspective of someone younger. - Billyv

Different and interesting take - but it's not "better". - Billyv

Hehe. Nice joke - 445956

10 Feelin' Alright - Joe Cocker

Among Cocker's best covers. - Ned964

Joe could fill a list of improved songs - Billyv

The Contenders

11 Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
12 Mighty Quinn - Manfred Manns Earth Band

Better Than Dylan's original - waldo

13 Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers
14 The Wizard - Blind Guardian
15 Loverman - Metallica
16 I Love Rock 'N' Roll - Joan Jett

Originally by the Arrows - Metal_Treasure

17 The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana

I prefer The Original David Bowie version of this one, maybe it's just my opinion. But I do agree with the other covers off of this album. - RogerWatersfan1999

18 The House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
19 It's a Sin - Gamma Ray

Oh yes, I agree with this one although the original is very good. - Metal_Treasure

20 Rock Me Baby - Blue Cheer
21 Parchman Farm - Blue Cheer
22 Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band

This song was their best selling single, peaking nr. 1 in the US - waldo

23 You Really Got Me - The 13th Floor Elevators

Wrong. - Billyv

24 Children of the Grave - Havok

I believe this cover is better than the original by Black Sabbath, especially the instrumental part - double bass sounds awesome and bass is more hearable. - Metal_Treasure

25 Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill
26 Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds

Definitely added some excellent guitar work and harmonies, but falls short for not including all of the wonderful verses. - Billyv

27 Bohemian Rhapsody - Panic! at the Disco

This has got to be a joke! - RogerWatersfan1999

No - waldo

28 The Sound of Silence - Disturbed

Umm... I disagree here - vocal harmonies are the most beautiful thing in the original and I miss them in the cover. - Metal_Treasure

Absolutely ridiculous claim - Billyv

The original is to flowery for me, but this guy's voice is brimming with emotion. - SoldierOfFortune

The original is intended to convey detachment and alienation, somewhat void of emotion. The harmonies are still musically beautiful amidst the depiction of decay - Billyv

No way, no way. - Undistinguished

29 Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies

I prefer the Junkies version, but the VU original ain't too shabby. - Ned964

30 Take Me to the River - Talking Heads

While I respect Al Green's original, please, this cover put the Heads on the map... Annie Lennox's later cover deserves props as well - Ned964

31 Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer

Derringer actually wrote the song while playing with Johnny Winter, then covered his own song a few years later. I prefer the remake - Ned964

32 Cum on Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot
33 Live is a Highway - Rascal Flatts

This is a good cover but vocals are kinda cheesy compared to the original. Overall, the original has more energy and raw rocking power (which I like). The cover is more mainstream-ish and this doesn't please me. - Metal_Treasure

34 Grenade - Within Temptation
35 Powerslave - Testament
36 Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley

Technically, this is alternative soft-folk rock, so it counts. - 445956

37 Superstar - Sonic Youth
38 Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Marilyn Manson
39 Gloria - Patti Smith
40 Father of Day, Father of Night - Manfred Manns Earth Band
41 Bouree - Jethro Tull
42 The Star Spangled Banner - Jimi Hendrix
43 Wild Thing - Jimi Hendrix
44 Black Sabbath (From the Satanic Perspective) - Type O Negative

A great reworking of Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. I consider it a cover even though the lyrics were changed. - SteelCity99

45 Doctor Doctor - Iron Maiden
