Top 10 Rock Covers Which are Better Than the Original Songs

The Top Ten

1 All Along the Watchtower - The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Dylan tried to cover hendrix version of his own song - waldo

Tried? He said that Hendrix' take was more like what he'd originally imagined. Then he recreated his version incorporating a more electric, harder rock style to better capture the atmosphere. And he did it very well.
Further, Dylan has constantly re-arranged and altered most of his songs. He's recorded several live versions of this one, and he's known for making changes one night to the next during his tours. - Billyv

I definitely agree with this.

2 Twist and Shout - The Beatles

Pretty much anything The Beatles covered was an improvement over the original. - BKAllmighty

They recorded it in one take - waldo

3 Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - The Doors
4 Smooth Criminal - Alien Ant Farm

Not true. the Michael Jackson version will always be better. - awesomedp900

I can respect MJ for have gathered such a large fanbase, but this song isn't good. I like Beat It, but the metal version of this song is just more tolerant. - SoldierOfFortune

I’d prefer the original even though I’m a metal head myself, lol - KingSlayer93316

5 Proud Mary - Ike & Tina Turner

Originally by Creedence Clearwater Revival - Metal_Treasure

6 Summertime Blues - Blue Cheer

It might be just me but I think the original one is better. But Parchman Farm, I can agree with. - Undistinguished

7 Whiskey in the Jar - Metallica

Can we just add the whole album? - EliHbk

8 Feelin' Alright - Joe Cocker

Joe could fill a list of improved songs - Billyv

9 Eleanor Rigby - Vanilla Fudge

No. Sorry. This list item is about as substantiated as the 'Elvis is alive' myth. - BKAllmighty

10 Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Guns N' Roses

I see 2 people already disagreed but to me this version is better - it definitely has better instrumentation and better vocals. - Metal_Treasure

Yet it somewhat distorts the intent of the song - it wouldn't have fit the purpose of the original recording as well.
It's very good and adds elements that make it worthwhile. And it's a respectful cover. But - like other songs listed here - it isn't "better". The vocals are very good and stylistic, but they aren't "better" either. Dylan's convey the appropriate weariness and resigned acceptance of the character, as well as the setting. Axl's seem to carry more anguish and anger, perhaps a perspective of someone younger. - Billyv

Different and interesting take - but it's not "better". - Billyv

Hehe. Nice joke - 445956

The Newcomers

? When the Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin

The Contenders

11 Hound Dog - Elvis Presley
12 The Wizard - Blind Guardian

I love UH. But this is gold.

13 Mighty Quinn - Manfred Manns Earth Band

Better Than Dylan's original - waldo

14 Higher Ground - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Nah, I disagree. I like the idea of having a slap bass riff throughout the song, but otherwise, I think Stevie Wonder did it better. Especially in the vocals department. - Gg2000

15 Loverman - Metallica
16 I Love Rock 'N' Roll - Joan Jett

Yep. This one's definitely better. - Gg2000

Originally by the Arrows - Metal_Treasure

17 The Man Who Sold the World - Nirvana

I prefer The Original David Bowie version of this one, maybe it's just my opinion. But I do agree with the other covers off of this album. - RogerWatersfan1999

18 The House of the Rising Sun - The Animals
19 It's a Sin - Gamma Ray

Oh yes, I agree with this one although the original is very good. - Metal_Treasure

20 Rock Me Baby - Blue Cheer
21 Parchman Farm - Blue Cheer

I prefer the version recorded by Cactus. It's got some really cool guitar playing. - Gg2000

22 Children of the Grave - Havok

I believe this cover is better than the original by Black Sabbath, especially the instrumental part - double bass sounds awesome and bass is more hearable. - Metal_Treasure

23 Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann's Earth Band

This song was their best selling single, peaking nr. 1 in the US - waldo

24 You Really Got Me - The 13th Floor Elevators

Wrong. - Billyv

25 The Sound of Silence - Disturbed

Umm... I disagree here - vocal harmonies are the most beautiful thing in the original and I miss them in the cover. - Metal_Treasure

Absolutely ridiculous claim - Billyv

The original is to flowery for me, but this guy's voice is brimming with emotion. - SoldierOfFortune

The original is intended to convey detachment and alienation, somewhat void of emotion. The harmonies are still musically beautiful amidst the depiction of decay - Billyv

One of the best covers ever!
it makes the hair stand up on arms when I listen to it

26 Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley

Technically, this is alternative soft-folk rock, so it counts. - 445956

27 Bohemian Rhapsody - Panic! at the Disco

Never have I seen something so wrong in my life. Bohemian Rhapsody is Queen's song, and Queen's version is 1 billion times better. No offense to Panic at The Disco anyone who thinks this version is better is a fanboy.

This has got to be a joke! - RogerWatersfan1999

No - waldo

28 Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill
29 Grenade - Within Temptation
30 Mr. Tambourine Man - The Byrds

Definitely added some excellent guitar work and harmonies, but falls short for not including all of the wonderful verses. - Billyv

31 I Ain't Superstitious - The Jeff Beck Group
32 Sweet Jane - Cowboy Junkies
33 Take Me to the River - Talking Heads
34 Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer

I agree. This has got more drive than Johnny Winter's version. - Gg2000

35 Cum on Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot
36 Live is a Highway - Rascal Flatts

This is a good cover but vocals are kinda cheesy compared to the original. Overall, the original has more energy and raw rocking power (which I like). The cover is more mainstream-ish and this doesn't please me. - Metal_Treasure

37 Powerslave - Testament
38 Superstar - Sonic Youth
39 Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) - Marilyn Manson
40 Gloria - Patti Smith
41 Father of Day, Father of Night - Manfred Manns Earth Band
42 Bouree - Jethro Tull
43 The Star Spangled Banner - Jimi Hendrix
44 Wild Thing - Jimi Hendrix
45 Black Sabbath (From the Satanic Perspective) - Type O Negative

A great reworking of Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. I consider it a cover even though the lyrics were changed.

46 Doctor Doctor - Iron Maiden
