Top Ten Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll

Songs that you think were the most influential in shaping rock and roll.

The Top Ten

1 Jailhouse Rock - Elvis Presley

Probably most influential rock song ever. - zxm

2 Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
3 Johnny B. Goode - Chuck Berry

This song started it all. Without it, a lot of music we listen to today wouldn't exist. - mmarce445

This song is THE most important song in rock music by the most important artist in rock. The only rock song sent into space.

To say this song "started it all" shows a lack of historical knowledge of the evolution of rock 'n' roll from blues and rockabilly. There were many other players involved. To further say that "a lot of the music we listen to today wouldn't exist" is a huge assumption, not supported by history or the laws of probability.

4 Great Balls of Fire - Jerry Lee Lewis
5 Good Golly Miss Molly - Little Richard
6 Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley & the Comets
7 I Want to Hold Your Hand - The Beatles

Historical significance. Their first number one hit in the US, leading the "British Invasion" and enabling future influence. - Billyv

8 (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
9 Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys
10 Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

I once took guitar lessons. One day we got off topic and started talking about classic rock. I remember him specifically rattling off a list of songs that shaped rock n roll. I remember him saying that this was the most important

Three years later, I realize he was right

The Contenders

11 Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

The ‘rock’ songs we know are all a derivative form of THE rock n’ roll. This list is about the songs which influenced other musicians to shape rock n’ roll or other rock songs into what it is now. - Undistinguished

Several songs on this list are not rock 'n' roll, and don't see where this one or Bohemian Rhapsody or anything by Neil Young "shaped" anything.

How is this song at #16 is beyond my understanding. It's one of the top songs that shaped RNR - Metal_Treasure
