I really liked the design choices with Kakashi the very first time I saw him. (I was 14 back then and obviously didn't know what design meant at the time.)
The fact that he covers his eye for such a long time makes one curious about what happened. It creates suspense. I thought the eye might have been gouged out or cut. The Sharingan reveal is a well-written payoff.
The mask adds another level of mystery, and its black color complements his white hair. Cool design.
