Top 10 Things that Make High School Worse Than Middle School

If you think middle school is bad, wait until you get to high school. It's far worse in multiple ways.

If I missed a reason, feel free to add it.

The Top Ten
  1. Increased stress

When you're a teenager in high school, you'll go through so much stress that you don't know how to handle it. They pile on work or have very tight deadlines on projects, making almost every teenager unhappy and exhausted at school.

Maybe this is why teenagers are so moody and rarely happy.

Seriously! There's so much homework, and my school feels the need to make everything so complicated. I'm only a month into my freshman year! It sucks!

Stress in high school is ridiculous. From projects to tests to trying to keep your grades up to planning your future.

  2. State-mandated curriculum

  3. Increased drama

Middle school drama is about smaller things, and there's more of it, while high school drama is slightly less abundant but involves bigger issues.

Elementary school drama: YOU TOOK MY ERASER!

Middle school drama: YOU STOLE MY CRUSH!

High school drama: YOU FORGOT MY WEED.

  4. Higher levels of frustration

    Yep, and homework as well.

Oh boy! If you thought middle school was frustrating, then good luck with high school.

  5. Grade maintenance pressure

Middle school grades are basically meaningless outside of extracurricular activities. High school grades stay with you forever.

Going from middle to high school, I thought I was going to be fine. I'm a horrible test taker, and now tests are 40% of my grade!

I'm Asian, and I tried so hard to get straight As to please my high-expectation parents, but it was tough!

  6. Heightened peer pressure

I'm scared to share your opinion more in high school than in middle school.

  7. Hair-tearing exams

I'm in Year 6 right now, and secondary school - I'm from England - looks really hard for kids like me with autism.

Not only that, but it could absolutely kill your grade.

Middle school has hard exams, but high school's are almost impossible.

  8. Constant college pressure

I mean, you can go to college if you want, but if you don't want to, that's perfectly OK. What are you doing, holding me at gunpoint to go to college?

Teachers, we teens can decide what we want to do. I know you have to support us, which is great, but stop pushing us to do things that we might not even want to do.

"College is important! You have to focus on us and be good in order to get in!" *Facepalms* I know people who used to have lots of bad grades who got in.

  9. Annoying classmates

And now there's even more than in middle school.

  10. Hypocritical teachers

No phones in class! *Gets on their phone 5 minutes later* or No food or drinks in class *Gets out an entire fast food meal*

I once made a mistake on an exam and got the worst possible grade.

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Chewing gum is allowed

  13. ?

    Widespread drug presence

Yep, it's real and extremely scary.

  14. The Contenders
  15. Mandatory standardized testing

It's so stupid having standardized tests even in high school! It was already stressful enough in middle school. But it's even more stressful in high school due to harder coursework, extracurriculars, and other tests like the SAT, ACT, and AP exams.

Luckily, I only had to do the standardized test one year and passed without studying, even though I did poorly most of the time in middle school when studying for hours each day.

Why do we have to take standardized tests?!

I'm Asian and I took the PSAT in high school. I failed it.

  16. False promises from parents about high school

It's true! Parents lie to you. When you realize how things work in high school, you just want to flee and give up.

This is why I haven't spoken to my parents in years.

  17. Excessive homework

  18. Increased bullying

I had a bully who believed he was the boss, but I ignored him. Then he tried to ruin my life because I didn't respect him as a god, and I realized how he is the boss.

I also suffered trauma for a few months because of bullying.

  19. Unproductive group projects

  20. Judgment based on appearance and behavior

Man, many students there are pretty manipulative and menacing.

  21. Cornell note-taking system

My history and biology teachers make the students take Cornell notes all the time. Cornell notes are useless and don't even work.

UGH! I hate these. It's clunky and awkward. Just let me take notes how I want to.

If you don't know what these are, you're very lucky.

  22. Lack of real-world preparation

Three or four wasted and cruel years of your life.

  23. Credit requirements for graduation

  24. Make-up work after absences

Ugh, yeah, and if you don't understand it, good luck.

  25. Misleading portrayals in media

It's not Grange Hill, Glee, or High School Musical.

  26. Stricter tardy and detention policies

  27. Detached teachers
