Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog is the title character and protagonist of the video game series of the same name released by SEGA. He has since appeared in numerous spin-off comics, several television shows, an animated OVA, and a live-action movie trilogy. Known for his incredible speed and signature blue color... read more
I absolutely adore Sonic! Next to Tails, he is my favorite and the face of the franchise for a reason! Even at the series' worst, I can't find myself hating Sonic.
His design, personality, brotherly relationship with Tails, and a good heart deeply resonate with me. He's the blue dude with a 'tude, and that's the way I like it! Long live Sonic the Hedgehog!
No one is a real Sonic the Hedgehog fan if they don't like Sonic. I mean, come on, he is the fastest character in the game. If he is facing Knuckles, he would beat him up in a second, just like when Emerl used Sonic's moves to defeat Knuckles in the Sonic X series. Sonic has also defeated Shadow many times in the games, like in Sonic Generations.
Don't get me wrong. I like all the characters on this list, but Sonic will always be first in my mind. People are starting to like Shadow and Silver more than Sonic. That's why I think they made Sonic the only playable character in Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors, and Sonic Generations. I think they should create new gameplay for Sonic. So stop making Sonic look lame and boring, and putting Shadow and Silver in the front.

Shadow the Hedgehog
Shadow the Hedgehog is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series released by Sega. He is an artificially created black and red hedgehog with hover shoes that enable him to move at extreme speeds, rivaling those of Sonic.... read more
Shadow is better than Sonic in almost every respect for the following reasons:
1. Sonic cannot fly, while Shadow can, thanks to his shoes.
2. Sonic has stated that he would never touch firearms, but Shadow will shoot someone without a second thought.
3. Sonic may be the fastest thing alive, but Shadow can go much faster using his shoes and Chaos Control.
4. Although Sonic may live for centuries due to Sega's aging system, he will eventually die. Shadow, on the other hand, is immortal.
5. Sonic may have been created first in real life, but in the games, Shadow was created around 34 years before Sonic was born, making Sonic the faker.
6. Sonic's friends are an underage fox and a gullible anteater, whereas Shadow's friends are a sophisticated spy/professional thief and an awesome destruction-loving robot.
7. Sonic's quills turn up when he goes super, but Shadow's are already so cool that they look the same both ways.
8. Sonic is not badass, and Shadow most certainly is.
9. While there is nothing wrong with liking Sonic, liking Shadow demonstrates inclusivity as he is black.
10. Shadow can perform Chaos Control with one emerald, while Sonic needs all seven.
11. Chaos Control is the only Chaos power Sonic can use, but Shadow has Chaos Control, Chaos Blast, Chaos Spear, Chaos Boost, and Chaos Lance.
12. Shadow is able to kill Sonic (even if he doesn't actually do it), as proven by Shadow killing Sonic in several endings to Shadow the Hedgehog.
13. Sure, Sonic can drive a transforming car, but Shadow has military-grade training in almost every vehicle you can think of.
14. The most endings to one of Sonic's games was two (Sonic CD), but Shadow is so awesome that he got 11 endings to his game, and 326 separate stories altogether. That's a lot of replay value.
15. Mephiles the Dark agrees that Shadow is more useful and powerful, as Mephiles tries to kill Sonic but wants Shadow to join him.... read more

Miles "Tails" Prower
Miles Prower, more commonly known by his nickname Tails, is a fictional character in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a significant main character after Sonic, who is also his best friend. Tails is a two-tailed fox who can use his tails to fly and is known for his skills in mechanics and aviation... read more
Besides Sonic, Tails is tied for my favorite Sonic character. I love his design. It's simple but effective. Also, he's badass adorable! Tails may be cute and just a kid, but you don't mess with him or his friends.
His brotherly relationship with Sonic is developed so well that it makes me happy and sticks with me. To put it simply, Tails is awesome!
I really don't understand why Silver is currently beating out both Tails and Knuckles on this list. I thought he was a pretty hated character! Anyway, Tails is by far my favorite Sonic character for a number of reasons:
1. He's pretty much just as iconic as Sonic himself, appearing in almost every Sonic game after Sonic 2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but other than Sonic 1, I think Sonic CD was the only main series installment in which Tails did not make an appearance.
2. He can fly! I know a lot of other Sonic characters now have flight abilities, but Tails was the first to possess this ability. Not only can he fly using his two tails to propel himself in the air, but he's also a pilot. Tails flies the Tornado, although I'm still not quite sure if the plane belongs to him or to Sonic.
3. He saved Sonic's life. If you beat Sonic 2 as Sonic but don't collect all seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic will be seen plummeting toward the earth. He then safely lands on the Tornado, piloted by Tails, of course. The same thing happens again in Sonic Advance, so Tails has really saved Sonic's life at least twice!
4. He's a skilled inventor. I'm not sure if Tails has an IQ of 300 like Dr. Robotnik, but he's one of the smartest characters in the franchise and the most mechanically experienced character other than the evil doctor himself. Tails is responsible for the creation of the Tornado II in Sonic Adventure, as well as the Tornado III in Sonic Adventure 2. The Tornado II and III are probably his most notable inventions, but he has also invented several other gadgets in other games in the franchise. Anyone who knows Tails even slightly knows that he's good with technology!... read more

Knuckles the Echidna
Knuckles the Echidna is a fictional character from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He is portrayed as a red, anthropomorphic echidna who is serious, determined, and loyal, though sometimes gullible.
Knuckles possesses the ability to glide through the air, climb vertical surfaces,... read more
He's always been my favorite Sonic character. This guy is AWESOME! He started out as an anti-hero in Sonic 3. One day, Super Sonic was just flying around, being all cool and stuff, when BAM - a red echidna named Knuckles hits Super Sonic so hard that it knocks the Chaos Emeralds out of him! Then Knuckles steals all of the emeralds! It's up to Sonic and Tails to get them back.
Eventually, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles realize they have one common enemy: Eggman. By this time, Sonic had gotten all of the emeralds back. Now, Sonic and Knuckles team up. Sonic actually gives the emeralds to Knuckles so he can start collecting the Super Emeralds. These emeralds are much stronger than the Chaos Emeralds. Then Sonic gets the Super Emeralds and becomes HYPER SONIC! Sonic defeats Eggman and the world is saved!
But that is beside the point. Remember, in the beginning, Super Sonic is supposed to be invincible. BUT, Knuckles hits Super Sonic SO HARD that it knocks the emeralds out of him! Knuckles is SUPER STRONG! You can't forget that, unlike Sonic, he can glide. Also, he can climb up walls. He even wears gloves that have SPIKES on them! The three hedgehogs may be awesome, but make way for Knuckles the Red Echidna!
-
Silver the Hedgehog
Silver the Hedgehog is a fictional character from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He first appeared in the 2006 game Sonic the Hedgehog and is portrayed as a telekinetic hedgehog from a post-apocalyptic future. Silver travels back in time to prevent disasters that would destroy his world... read more
Personally, Silver is my favorite character from the Sonic franchise. His unique personality brings life to the underdeveloped Sonic '06, while also providing fun gameplay. Many anti-Silver fans dislike him simply because he is new.
Yes, Silver is immature, occasionally bratty, and naive. However, at his core, he is a righteous character with a strong sense of justice. Personally, I believe his character flaws make him a more complete and somewhat relatable character.
While telekinesis isn't a particularly original idea, Silver pulls it off in a new, unique, and fresh way. This is mainly because his personality gives him a somewhat unlikely aura for a telekinetic character. Sometimes, for a character to be good, giving them less-than-perfect personalities can be the key. In the case of Silver the Hedgehog, this holds true.
-
Blaze the Cat
Blaze the Cat is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series who first appeared in the Nintendo DS game Sonic Rush in 2005. She is a princess from an alternate dimension and the guardian of the Sol Emeralds. Blaze possesses pyrokinetic abilities and can transform into Burning Blaze when empowered... read more
It was really close between Blaze and Tails, but Blaze just barely wins. The fact that she initially starts out as a loner yet eventually learns about having friends in people like Cream, Marine, and especially Sonic shows that she knows she can trust others, even if she doesn't want to. This is due to the fact that she is the guardian of the Sol Emeralds, which are the polar opposite of the Chaos Emeralds.
Having the power to control flames, as well as having a fear of heights, shows that Blaze has her strengths and weaknesses. This makes Blaze one of the most interesting characters in the Sonic series.
I really like Blaze for many reasons. She's strong and very skillful, able to keep up with other speed-type characters like Sonic and Shadow. She has pyrokinetic powers, and even though she started out as a very cold person who didn't rely on others, she began to trust other characters and become more open toward them. I find that really interesting.
I also find her past life interesting. She was alone and all. Even when she went through tough times, she still stood strong and independent, and I find that amazing! I think she should be second only to Sonic.
-
Doctor Eggman
Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is a fictional character created by Naoto Ohshima for Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series. He serves as the primary antagonist, often clashing with Sonic in his quest for world domination. Eggman is depicted as a brilliant but mad scientist who leads the Eggman Empire and creates... read more
Doctor Eggman is a mechanical genius, only surpassed in IQ by Tails. He's also hilarious in Sonic Boom! Forget all those people who say that Bowser is better. In my opinion, only Doctor Neo Cortex from the Crash Bandicoot series and Bowser Junior are better villains than Eggman. I love the names that Sonic calls him as well. They're so funny! Eggman is actually really underrated. He doesn't deserve to be in tenth place. He deserves to be in sixth.
Ahead of him are Tails in first place, then Sonic, with Amy edging out Shadow, followed by Sticks, and then Eggman. He shouldn't be insulted by being ranked below Rouge and Metal Sonic.
#savetheegghead
I believe he should be number four, or even three, perhaps five, as unlike many of the other characters, the latest games haven't characterized him as some helpless person who needs someone to guide them.
Certainly, he may have some bad lines here and there, but overall, most of them were at least decent, and half the time he didn't sound like an idiot. This character has a lot of potential.
-
Metal Sonic
Metal Sonic is one of Dr. Eggman's most advanced robotic creations, engineered to surpass Sonic the Hedgehog in every possible way. He possesses an array of powers including the ability to fire electro-balls, emit electricity, perform a speed boost, and become temporarily invincible. Over time, he evolves... read more
Metal Sonic is the robot version of the original Sonic. He's cool and iconic, and he first appeared in one of my favorite Sonic games. I like his villain character and how he's obsessed with beating Sonic, even though he's a robot.
I think he has a cool design. I don't really know why, but there's something about how Metal Sonic has been in all of these games. At least he always shows up. He's just really cool whenever he appears.
I really like his music and all of his boss battles. I love when you turn on the studio. Sonic is cool, and Metal Sonic looks even cooler and becomes a true villain. So yeah, he's cool.
Metal is the only recurring true enemy that has almost beaten Sonic several times. He holds a wide array of his own weaponry, such as a chest-mounted laser, electrokinesis, shapeshifting, and the ability to copy other characters' moves and attacks. Not to mention, he rebuilds himself into Neo Metal Sonic and transforms into Metal Madness and Metal Overlord.
He is also one of the strongest characters in the series, being able to destroy sets of spikes by simply floating into them. Ironically enough, he is the hardest boss in Sonic CD. However, he is not fought like a traditional boss. Instead, he is raced.
-
Espio the Chameleon
Espio the Chameleon is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise who first appeared in the 1995 Sega 32X game Knuckles' Chaotix. He debuted alongside Charmy Bee and Vector the Crocodile as part of the Chaotix team. Initially portrayed with a short temper, Espio's personality evolved significantly... read more
Espio is my favorite. He has so many unique styles. He's a Ninja Chameleon. Who doesn't like Ninja Chameleons?
Also, I don't agree with Shadow being at number one. He is completely overrated. I know all you Shadow fanboys will give this comment a bad rating, but this is my perspective on Shadow: He's just Sonic with hover shoes and black and red skin! What's the point? Everyone talks about his special power of Chaos Control. Did you play Sonic Adventure 2? Sonic did it too! This can only mean that you started playing Sonic after Sonic Adventure 2 came out. Sonic is way better than Shadow, but Shadow is overrated by everyone. He isn't original. He came out of a copy machine. But anyway, Espio is my favorite.
-
Rouge the Bat
Rouge the Bat is a video game character in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series. She made her debut in Sonic Adventure 2, released in 2001 for the Sega Dreamcast. Rouge is a jewel thief and government agent, known for her confident and flirtatious personality, as well as her complex relationships with other... read more
I can see why Sonic places first, obviously, but my favorite character is Rouge the Bat, and I'm glad she made it to the top 10. What sealed the deal for me was her character in Sonic X, where she was a sassy, seductive, smooth-talking badass who lightened the dark atmosphere of the show. She was certainly one of my favorite comic relief characters of all time.
I also appreciate her in the games, where she retains the same qualities she had in the show. I love the voice actor who portrays her, and I just love everything about her. You have my vote, Rouge!
She's number 9?! Only number 9?! Rouge is so much better than most of the characters above her, especially Sonic. She's beautiful, skilled, and has a lot of personality. She doesn't give a crap about how dangerous something is, and she isn't afraid of jumping headfirst into a fight.
She doesn't care what she does, like kissing Tails, flirting with her enemies, making fun of characters, and even becoming a spy. She has to be in the top 3 at least.

Tangle the Lemur
My favorite Sonic comic character!

Whisper the Wolf
Omg, why is she so underrated? She has an amazing design, an interesting personality, and a sad backstory!
Guys, vote for this character now! Whisper definitely needs more attention!
-
Amy Rose
Amy Rose is a fictional character in SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is a pink anthropomorphic hedgehog known for her cheerful and competitive personality, and she is infatuated with Sonic, the main character of the series. Amy is notable for being the first playable female character in the Sonic... read more
Amy Rose has to be my favorite character. Many say she's obsessive, one-dimensional, and crazy, but I think otherwise. Amy is a character who represents hope and optimism. She also embodies perseverance and friendship.
I feel as if Amy is underappreciated and that her character has regressed throughout the games. Why? In the Adventure series, Amy was portrayed as Sonic-crazy, yet very passionate about her beliefs, even if they contradicted Sonic's. However, her character took a step back in later games. The gag of her chasing and/or beating others, or Sonic, was overused, making that her only iconic trait, which I find unfair.
Much like what happened to Knuckles (him becoming increasingly less intelligent) has happened to Amy, with her becoming more and more obsessive. As of now, we haven't had a legitimate Sonic game for five years. Although we do have Sonic Boom, which has portrayed Amy in a much more appropriate way in terms of her crush. Project 2017 is coming out next year, and if Amy is in the game, I hope to see that her character has improved and that she gets the love she deserves.
-
Vector the Crocodile
Vector the Crocodile is a fictional character from the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He made his first appearance in the 1995 game Knuckles' Chaotix and returned in Sonic Heroes as the head of the Chaotix Detective Agency.... read more
This music-loving, short-tempered crocodile, boasting one of the most unique designs in the Sonic universe, may sometimes appear to be solely after money. However, Vector has proven on multiple occasions that he is a capable detective who will always help those in need for free. As a result, his detective agency is constantly short on funds. He is the only member of his team who worries about the rent and is willing to take any job to pay off his debts.
Nevertheless, Vector is generally optimistic and somewhat childish. He enjoys spending time with his friends and serves as the lead singer of his own band. Interestingly, this band consists of the same members as his detective team. He believes he has a great singing voice, although others might find it more destructive than enjoyable.
In my opinion, Vector possesses both an awesome design and a unique personality. Despite being the underdog of the franchise, he is so passionate about investigating that he never considers giving up his agency. He often uncovers secrets before anyone else does.
-
Cream the Rabbit
Cream the Rabbit is a fictional character from the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series created by Sega. She is a kind and polite young rabbit who is often seen with her Chao companion named Cheese. Cream has appeared in various Sonic games and animated adaptations since her debut.
Cream is really an underrated Sonic character that was unfairly bashed at the time. Thankfully, she has returned to the limelight to much fanfare.
She's adorable, and I love her bubbly personality. Cream looks like she's really having fun traversing levels! Her kind and polite personality makes her a standout among the rest of the Sonic cast. Although she may not like fighting, she can kick some ass when she needs to.
Also, Cheese is equally awesome! He may just be a Chao, but he is a badass too. Love them both!
SEGA should have Cream become Tails' top-tier, number-one apprentice so that they can work together and hang out more. This would be fantastic and brilliant. They should change her age to 7 and give her a chance to start all over again, while retaining her sweet and helpful personality.
Cream is incredibly brave and heroic. She will do whatever it takes to get the job done without breaking a sweat. Her voice is brilliant, and she knows how to defend herself and fight back with no problem.
Cream is never annoying and knows how to be mature. People seriously need to get their minds straight now. She is neither useless nor cowardly, as she can face all sorts of challenges, either with her friends or on her own, in order to succeed. Cream also knows how to save and protect others from any danger or harm. Even when she is doing her own secret vigilante crime-fighting, even just for fun, she is also supportive and extremely helpful to all her friends and others. Whenever they need her, even in the most challenging situations, she'll be there for them. She can kick some butt and have fun. Cream is truly one of the best and greatest Sonic characters of all time.
-
E-123 Omega
The Sonic, Mega Man, and Crash Bandicoot franchises should not have a robotic setting where the main antagonists are old, male, and evil scientists, and the main protagonists are tall, lanky males obsessed with a single color and annoying hairstyles. On the other hand, the Pac-Man franchise should. Besides, Sonic is nowadays an adult.
He is awesome! Plus, I like his backstory as a robot, and he's still friends with Rouge and Shadow.
I love this guy. He constantly insults and shames everyone around him, including his destroyed enemies.
-
Jet the Hawk
Jet the Hawk is a character from SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is the leader of the Babylon Rogues and is known for his arrogance, pride, and obsession with wealth and treasure. Although Jet rarely takes his leadership duties seriously, he knows how to assert his authority when necessary.
He is the best, along with Wave and Storm. It's a shame they were only in three games. Sega should either include them in future games or add more bird characters.
This character should be in first place because he's my favorite Sonic character of them all. Sonic is my second favorite.
In my opinion, Jet the Hawk is one of the most underrated characters that Sega has ever made.
-
Mephiles the Dark
This guy had a lot of potential, but in the end, he ended up being a generic doomsday villain with unclear reasons for his actions, who won't appear again. He still has some pretty neat aspects, as he's also similar to Shadow (time-space-related powers, born from an experiment, and obviously the same looks) but more deranged and creepy. From a certain point of view, he is what Shadow would have become if he let himself sink deeper into his hatred.
So, when Shadow battles him, he is, in a way, fighting his inner demons.
P.S. His general hamminess, Dan Green's voice, and awesome boss themes also make him more enjoyable.
Cunning, dark, and chaotic, Mephiles is a villain to behold. Having no mouth, he relies on actions to show his motives, in turn revealing more personality than most villains I've seen here. His appearance is utterly frightening and very unique, being the only Sonic character who is crystal-like.
While his backstory is a bit flawed, his personality makes up for it. His interactions with Shadow are exhilarating and tense. His boss music for his fights is stunning. He simply chills you to the core.
-
Chaos
Protective, fierce, and a force to be reckoned with, Chaos shows very early in Sonic Adventure that he will go to great lengths to protect the Chao - even destroying Station Square out of anger. Chaos's appearance is amazing and quite unique, although his visible brain is unsettling.
His friendship with Tikal is as sweet as that between Silver and Blaze. When he isn't on a rampage, Chaos is quite peaceful and content to guard the shrine. His personality is well-developed and amazing. His attacks and shapeshifting abilities are stunning. All in all, don't rile this creature.
Out of all the characters on this list, he has the most intriguing backstory and is truly awesome. Sadly, he hasn't made many appearances, but when he does appear, it's always a great ride.
Originating as a being of Chao and the Chaos Emerald, he mutated and was originally tasked with cleaning the water. When the Echidna clan tried to take the emeralds, he became Perfect Chaos and was then trapped by Tikal. After a while, he returned.
In my opinion, nothing can beat this god of destruction. He is so cool, with his elastic, shapeshifting abilities and simple design.
-
E-102 Gamma
The best Eggman Elite robot, made to destroy Sonic, but instead helped him and then destroyed himself.
He may not be as strong as Omega, but he is still better than Omega will ever be.
Really, guys! Come on, Gamma was programmed for mass destruction. Yet he made his own choices and decided to free the trapped animals in the other robots. He died just so the bird that was powering him could be free with his family. His death was the most heroic and human thing I've ever watched.
He had more character development in one game than Shadow had in three. He has a better story in a game with multiple storylines than Sonic 06's story. One of the characters with the most golden heart in the franchise is a robot. It's impossible not to like him.
-
Tikal the Echidna
Tikal is my favorite Sonic character. She is so calm, helpful, and always knows what's right. In the comics, she is a magical spirit, and people pray to her. If I get the chance to work at SEGA, I would absolutely make a game with her as the main character. "Chaos is power, enriched by the heart" - these are words I'll remember forever.
Tikal is also very beautiful, and her theme song always makes me happy. Even though she's not real, she gives my life meaning. Whenever I feel sad or depressed, I think about Tikal. She is my idol. I've never seen someone so awesome, so perfect as she is! I even like her more than Sonic. I draw comics about her and listen to her song almost all the time. The world would be a better place if we had more people like Tikal!
-
Mighty the Armadillo
Give Mighty some love! He's a cool idea for a character, and I wish Sega would bring back his modern incarnation.
It was cool to have his classic form return, but it would be great to see him in modern media too.
Come on, guys, Espio is my favorite, but Mighty needs some love! Show me the love, SEGA! Put Mighty and Espio in Sonic Boom for me!
Mighty is one of my favorite Sonic characters. I hope he comes back in the new Sonic Boom.
-
Sir Lancelot
Ah, Lancelot. What is there to say other than that he is amazing? He compares to Sonic in speed, is loyal, smart, and has a very important role in this game. Just saying.
Underrated. I love Lancelot. I hope Sonic and the Black Knight gets a remake someday for the Switch.
-
Scourge the Hedgehog
Honestly, for a long time, I've always hoped he'd make an appearance or at least be referred to as a character in the shows or games. Even a subtle poster blowing off into the breeze of a cutscene or something would be enough. He's an amazing character and has been through a lot in the comics.
Not only that, but imagine the boss fights if he were in a game. I mean, he is a Sonic replica after all! I'd forgive Amy if she mistook Scourge for Sonic in a game or show. He deserves more love and appreciation than he gets.
Scourge is really underrated. Just because he's not in the video games does NOT mean he's not important. He's probably more powerful than everyone and even beat Sonic, Shadow, and the whole gang all at the same time.
Shadow is still my favorite, but you've got to give props to Scourge. He's extremely powerful and straight up just bad. (Yes, I'm a huge fan of the comics.)
-
Black Doom
Definitely one of the series' more developed and serious villains. While I don't think he should personally make a return, the remaining Black Arms could still make for a good Shadow the Hedgehog 2.
-
Marine the Raccoon
Marine isn't as bad as Big. Heck, she is even shipped with Tails alongside Mina, Cream, and Cosmo. Tails is just 100% awesome. Marine is a lying brat at times, but still, she is awesome as well.
It's a shame SEGA and Sonic dislike her for her childish behavior! She's a very nice character if you give her a second chance!
Marine is a cute 7-year-old raccoon who should be in more Sonic games!
I think Marine should be playable!
-
Ray the Flying Squirrel
My pick for cutest character besides Tails. I mean, come on, what's not to love about a squirrel with a stutter? He might not be the best character in the Sonic universe, but I think he deserves more love. People have said he is pretty useless because he has no particularly unique powers besides his flying skills. I mean, he tries hard and works with what he's got. He's just a kid, so go easy on him. His Archie incarnation is fantastic, and I would love to see him return.
If there's ever going to be Sonic Adventure 3, I would like to see him as a playable character. He is a great character in the Archie comics.
