Best Mario & Luigi Games

The Top Ten
1 Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

This game rightfully deserves the number one spot. The story is amazing, the villain is both perfectly easy to love and hate, the whole idea of playing as Bowser is wonderful and the giant battle mechanic is lots of fun. People keep comparing this to Partners in Time, so I'll throw in my two cents as well. I find it kind of petty that people like PiT more because you can play as 4 characters rather than 3. First off, Bowser hits harder than both babies combined ever did, and I hated how the babies always did barely any damage by themselves, despite at one point being a higher level than the adults. Also, I personally found it annoying to always have to rely on the babies to use the hammer and to collect beans, and also to solve most puzzles. While it is a bit weird having to wait so long to actually walk around in a 3d environment as the brothers in this game, it still holds up much more than PiT, having better graphics and a better soundtrack. But hey, that's just my opinion.

Partners In Time is much better than Bowser's Inside Story. Here are the top 1 reasons.

Top 1: The graphics, animation & visuals are much better.

Top 2: Much better music.

Top 3: You get to play as 4 players while in Bowser's Inside Story, you only play as 3 characters.

Top 4: Better worlds & levels.

Top 5: Time travel.

Top 6: Much more of a cause of nostalgia.

Top 7: Partners in Time is much more original.

Top 8: The Baby Mario Bros.

Top 9: The bosses are much better than in Bowser's Inside Story.

Top 10: Not as much of a tough game,

Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is a great game. It's the first time since Super Mario RPG that we can play as Bowser and level him up. New, interesting Bros Attacks were introduced (Snack Basket is my favorite! )
And we also given ranks that prevent us from getting certain gear, which is genius! The soundtrack is fantastic, a great battle system, everything an RPG should have (*cough* Sticker Star *cough*). This game made me laugh out loud when I first played it due to its quirky humor, and it still does today. This is my second favorite RPG ever, and I think it's the greatest Mario game of all time! 10/10

My favourite Mario and Luigi RPG. One, the story is both hilarious, but also dark. Meanwhile, the soundtrack is great, and the gameplay is not too difficult, but not too easy, also. The only frustrating part was the pollen minigame, but other than that it's a great game.

2 Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time

Partners in Time is the best game in the series.
There are many factors to this: The first being the amazing soundtrack. It doesn't get any better than Partners in Time. In addition, the bosses, consisting of infamous ones such as Kamek and Bowser, plus totally original ones such as the Shrooboid Brat and Mrs. Thwomp are some of the best in the series, and all are amazing. The final battle w/ Elder Princess Shroob marks one of if not the hardest boss fights in the series. With 3,500 health, it's more than any other in the series. Oh, and that's just phase 1. Elder Princess Shroob helps to bring to life the evilness that the Shroobs stood for, in the vilest way. Partners in Time also has a wide diversity of worlds, a few of my favorites being Yoshi's Island, Thwomp Volcano, and Star Shrine. Partners in Time is simply an amazing game, and should be at the top of this list.

First game I owned and a great simple introduction to RPG's. I recently re-played the game and it hasn't lost any charm it had originally. I couldn't get through inside story again though, the long winded story and bowser easy fight style (copy&paste of Mario and luigi, if they have spikes or shield flame otherwise spam punch and bro attacks) just ruined the exited mood I had going back to it.

I love everything about this game...The story has gotta be the best out of them all, the bosses are challenging, the graphics are awesome, you can play as baby bros, time travel, and meet never-before-seen characters! The nostalgia..The music..everything..

Why you think I always replay the story of this game and feel depressed when I complete it?

This has got to be the most underrated Mario game of all time! Perfect graphics, nostalgic stages, creative music, 4 characters to play as, I would so agree with Recaller's opinion of this game. This is platinum!

3 Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Absolutely delightful experience. Tough it drags at some parts, at others it hits hard with its atmosphere and dreamlike premise. Every major plotpoint feels powerful or at the very least thematically fun/fitting. Combining the 2D graphics with 3D enviornments has been kinda sucking the magic out of recent entries, but I am willing to defend it here. This property made the game stand out from previous entries, increased the overall scope of the game and truly gave the game its sweet "Dreamy" feel. I think that it comes without saying that this entry has the best overall soundtrack in the franchise.

You may disagree, but from my experience (finished all first 4 entries) This one will be my favourite episode in the entire franchise. Even with its flaws.

This game is great! Look past the graphics and see it for the more important stuff. Antasma was a good villain, and Bowser was great in this game. The gameplay is original and immersive, the music is great as always, the story is interesting, the bosses were really fun, and the dream world was a great new concept! The game is pretty long, especially compared to the other Mario RPG's and it's not perfect, but it's so creative, original, and fun, and it had me entertained from start to finish!

This is probably the most original Mario & Luigi game of all time! Not only is it superior to Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga in pretty much every possible way, it's also one of the most innovative and original Mario games ever made! Yes! I think Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. is a good game! In fact, it's one of the greatest of all time in my opinion. One of the reasons is how original it is! So, Mario & Luigi go to Pi'ilo Island on a vacation together with Peach, and Peach gets kidnapped, now you might be thinking (hey? Isn't this the same story are every other Mario game? ), no, it isn't! Bowser doesn't kidnap Peach! It's a new villain known as Antasma the Bat King, a really excellent villain! Not only does he have an excellent and badass design, he has an excellent personality and backstory as well! And this is just the beginning! The gameplay is where it starts to look like Super Paper Mario is New Super Mario Bros.! This game has a dream world that Mario can access, but in order ...more

I don't get why everyone hates this game so much. It has great graphics, music, and Antasma, who has become one of my favorite non-Bowser villains. You haters could at least admit that Mario & Luigi Dream Team is better than that hideous game known as Paper Mario Sticker Star.

4 Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

This game rocks due to beautiful visuals & great animation, but why is Princess Peach being defenseless & incapable of taking care of herself?! She is putting us in trouble at Teehee Valley because we have to rescue & escort that bad-tempered princess of the Mushroom Kingdom from many minions. That ruined the whole game! Nonetheless, the whole game is awesome! But the text? It is confusing. The story? Average. This game is overrated, but it is nonetheless the best Mario RPG, especially in that segment where Mario & Luigi encounter Kirby & Wario on posters! This game is beautiful, & the music is beautiful! I would give this game a 6.8. Ah, the good old days...

I know everyone loves this one, and I do too, but I think it is the weakest of the four Mario and Luigi games (excluding Paper Jam since that may or may not count and is a little worse in my opinion anyway even though I like it). I never had the nostalgia for this game or appreciation of the innovations it made like most people do, since I played Bowser's Inside Story first out of this series. When I look at the series from a more unbiased perspective, I happen to like this one a little less than the others, but I'm sure others have different opinions, which is fine. In my opinion, the story was a little lackluster and anticlimacitc at the end, even though it had some fantastic and original characters and moments. The gameplay was just a little less fun as well, although it was still a blast. The music is pretty good but has less standout tracks to me than the other games. Overall, I still love it just like I love all the other Mario RPG's, but it didn't have as much appeal as some of ...more

This is the first Mario & Luigi game I played and it's one of the best Mario games I've ever played! Pherhaps the most original Mario game ever created! So basically Peach's voice gets stolen by the evil Cackletta so that she can awaken the beanstar, who could make all her wishes come true, and it could only be activated with a royal and nice voice, this is so original it makes video games like Super Mario Odyssey look like New Super Mario Bros. I don't think there's a single bad thing about this game, it's so good! The story, the gameplay, the music, pretty much everything! I love the amount of plot twists too! It's like in every world there's a new plot twist and sub-plot and it's amazing! Despite all those positives, a few flaws can be found, for example, there is a twist in THe middle of the game involving Birdo in a negative way, and I won't spoil but I did not like that. Despite that, this is probably one of the greatest games ever made. I have no idea how this is at number #4 ...more

Mario and Luigi:Superstar Saga has wacky dialogue, the tutorials weren't long(in case you were a Mario and Luigi veteran), and the music is on point! The villains were funny and creative! It was also pretty new, with Mario and Luigi exploring the Beanbean Kingdom instead of exploring the Mushroom Kingdom, like usual. If you were a Earthbound fan, this would be a great game for you. Overall, my conclusion is, if you have the chance, try this game out!

5 Mario Luigi Paper Jam - 3DS

Mario and Luigi Paper Jam is the best game in the series. This game has the best bosses, music, and gameplay. Paper Mario makes the battle system a lot more interesting and this adds more strategy to the game. The weakest part of this game is its story. Bowser kidnaps peach for the billionth time and Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario have to save her. Another thing some people don't like about this game is the paper craft battles. If you can get used to the controls than its not as bad as people say it is. Overall Mario and Luigi Paper Jam is definitely a game Mario and Luigi fans should check out.

Although this is when the Mario & Luigi series started to go downhill, at least it's not what Sticker Star did to the Paper Mario series, this game is still an enjoyable game! Sadly while this game used the princess peach gets kidnapped by Bowser story, the great thing about this game is probably the papercraft battles and the music! They were excellent! The papercraft battles are very unique and the best thing about the game! It helps it stand out from other games and the music was excellent! Just listen to Mountaintop Secrets! It's one of the best songs ever made! Paper Mario makes the battle system quite interesting as well as it allowed for trio attacks and his own attacks are different from mario & luigi's (no pun intended). The only big downside is that the story is (as you read above) boring and the worlds are the same grass, desert and beach worlds, but at least the worlds don't feel too empty. It's a pretty good game overall

Paper Jam has by far the best boss battles in the game, but the story revolves around Bowser kidnapping peach once again but this time Bowser manages to keep the bros away from his castle. Only Bowser and paper Bowser are the villains, which is just a con for me. The story matters the most, which places this at #5 for me.

Paper jam is acturally a very interesting adition, its not what I think a paper Mario/Mario and luigi crossover could have been, but it is very fun, and playing with paper Mario is the best!. definitely a must buy for series fans, and probably #3 on my list of top 5 Mario and luigi titles

6 Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey

Mario and Luigi is my favorite series of all time and this game is my favorite. The concept of going inside bowser is genius, the battle system is great, bosses are cool, music is amazing, graphism are also amazing, bowser is a nice change of pace from Mario and Luigi, the characters are good, and the story is both funny and epic. I prefer the remake over the original because of the improved graphism, adding a theme for the dark star and dark Fawful, and while bowser jr's journey is mediocre for the gameplay, you don't have to play, and it's still one thing the remake have that the original don't. Plus, at the very least it's interesting for the story.

Probably the best looking game in the series, the effects especially inside boser is great to see, from lighting effects the squishy ground to reflective and slimy looking tissue, it all looks so good to the eyes. They've outdone themselves somehow making bosers insides even more fun to explore.

The original may be the bestselling game in the series but the remake is the worst selling game in the series.

The original sold around 4 million copies while the remake only sold around 20000 copies.

Such a shame a great remake sells so poorly.

A remake of the original Bowser's Inside Story, I will probably get this one since I never played the original

7 Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

Just the best in the series for me, even after playing all the other games though.

I'm not sure if this counts as its own game, but I prefer it over the original.

I love this game so much

Better than original!
