Top 10 Best Classroom of the Elite Characters

COTE, also known as Classroom of the Elite, is an astonishing anime. It revolves around Kiyotaka Ayanokouji, a student who is mentally and physically exceptional, studying at one of Japan's most prestigious high schools.

The Top Ten
  1. Kiyotaka Ayanokouji

One of his most well-written traits is the constant friction between his internal monologues and his external actions. He frequently lies to himself, expressing a desire for a "peaceful, ordinary high school life" while simultaneously engineering complex, manipulative scenarios behind the scenes. The psychological damage from his childhood leaves him viewing human relationships through a purely transactional lens of "tools and winners," yet he exhibits a subconscious yearning to understand genuine human emotion and connection.

This is the coolest fact about him: Ayanokoji's actual goal at the start of the series is to live a completely ordinary, peaceful high school life. He actively tries to make friends, attempts to understand human emotions, and wants to experience youth.

  2. Manabu Horikita

Suzune was completely obsessed with becoming a perfect copy of Manabu. She chose her hair, her speech patterns, and her goals entirely based on what he did. Manabu recognized that this parasitic obsession would ruin her. By completely pushing her away and treating her with absolute distance, he was trying to force her to stop chasing his shadow and find her own path. He acts as a quiet catalyst for her growth. He trusts Ayanokoji to help her cultivate that independence, showing a level of profound strategic trust and sibling care that is entirely hidden behind his stoic Student Council President mask.

Manabu is such a great character because his pride isn't fragile. He didn't need to step on Suzune to maintain his status as the legendary "perfect student" of the school. He wanted her to step out of his shadow so they could finally stand side by side as siblings.

  3. Suzune Horikita

She is highly perceptive. Even when Ayanokoji manipulates situations from the shadows, Horikita grows to recognize his fingerprints, learning from his cold strategies while maintaining her own moral boundaries.

Her leadership of the class becomes authentic. By the later volumes of the light novels, she is making high-stakes tactical decisions on her own instinct, proving she is a brilliant strategist in her own right, not just a tool on Ayanokoji's chessboard. She earns every ounce of respect she gets from her class, her brother, and the audience.

Suzune Horikita's growth is arguably the most satisfying arc in Classroom of the Elite, especially because her transition from an icy loner to a capable leader feels entirely earned. Rather than giving her a sudden, unrealistic personality flip, the story forces her to systematically confront her own flaws. She shifts from demanding obedience to understanding what motivates her peers, which allows her to lead through respect rather than fear.

  4. Kikyo Kushida

Kushida acts as a brilliant wildcard threat. Because her initial priority isn't the class's success, but rather protecting her secret past and expelling anyone who knows it, like Horikita and Ayanokoji, she injects pure tension into every exam. She is willing to leak information, form underground alliances with rival class leaders like Ryūen, and act as a double agent. Fans like her simply because she makes the plot unpredictable and highly engaging. She possesses arguably the most potent networking and social skills in the entire school. She can read the room instantly, charm almost anyone, and manipulate information pathways effortlessly.

  5. Kakeru Ryuen

Ryūen pridefully believed his brand of violence, terror, and absolute control was unbeatable. Ayanokoji didn't just beat him. He systematically dismantled his ideology while showing zero emotion, leaving Ryūen to feel true, paralyzing fear for the first time in his life.

Instead of throwing a desperate tantrum or scheming for a cheap revenge plot, Ryūen completely accepted that he had met a literal monster. He took full accountability for the failure of his class, was entirely ready to accept expulsion, and protected his subordinates, like Ibuki and Ishizaki, by trying to take the full blame. He didn't come back as a changed, soft-hearted "good guy." He came back with his signature ruthless edge completely intact, but with zero ego holding him back.

  6. Kei Karuizawa

Kei Karuizawa's transformation is the gold standard for character development in Classroom of the Elite, turning a seemingly shallow, annoying stereotype into the most emotionally profound and relatable female character in the series! She understood that in a cruel school environment, if you aren't at the top of the social food chain, you become a target. Her early behavior was a desperate, panicked attempt to protect herself from ever being hurt again.

When Ryūen and his enforcers kidnapped her, poured freezing water on her, and psychologically tortured her to reveal the identity of the "X" mastermind, Kei chose to protect Ayanokoji. At this point, she believed Ayanokoji had abandoned her and used her as a disposable tool. Yet, despite her paralyzing fear of being bullied again, she refused to sell him out. She chose to break her own parasitic shield and face absolute social ruin rather than betray the person who had protected her. It was a massive display of independent moral fortitude that completely cleared her of being a "weak" character.

  7. Rokusuke Koenji

Koenji is the only guy in the entire school who can rival Ayanokoji. Koenji destroys group strategies by simply not cooperating and being his unapologetic self. He's my favorite!

Koenji is so funny, and I love how he's just himself without worrying about others. He's so badass!

  8. Honami Ichinose

In the Year 2 volumes, she becomes fiercely proactive and sharper in exams. She targets her rivals strategically because she has finally dropped her naive "peace and love" attitude to survive in a cutthroat environment. Ichinose is the only leader who tried to climb to Class A through pure honesty, zero expulsions, and unconditional kindness. Her character serves a crucial thematic purpose: she is proof that a completely pure moral system cannot survive intact in a broken, sociopathic system.

She wants everyone to succeed together, which is an incredibly difficult ideal in COTE's environment. Every class loss, betrayal, or setback hits her personally because she genuinely cares. That's why her darker moments are so important. They show that beneath the smile is someone experiencing loss and fear of losing her classmates.

  9. Kohei Katsuragi

  10. Airi Sakura

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Akito Miyake

  13. ?

    Ai Morishita

  14. The Contenders
  15. Sae Chabashira

  16. Takuya Yagami

He is incredible! When he first arrived, he wore the mask of a sweet, unassuming underclassman who admired his "senpai" from middle school. Yagami's innocent act was flawless. He didn't act out of insecure anxiety. He acted out of calculated, absolute White Room execution. He wasn't just faking a smile. He was executing a flawless tactical operation.

Yagami is adorable, and he should've lasted longer. He really was such a mystery.

He deserved to have more screen time! What a true genius!

  17. Yosuke Hirata

I admire his character development and growth. He was an impressive character who needs more love!

  18. Ken Sudo

He's well written as a side character! Early on, Sudo relies entirely on his physical size and aggression to handle problems, masking his deep-seated insecurities with explosive anger. His realization that his short temper actively harms his class and pushes away the people he cares about is the vital wake-up call he needed to change.

For a proud athlete, admitting he needs academic help is a massive hurdle. Watching him swallow his pride, sit down to study, and drastically improve his grades is incredibly satisfying because it requires a level of mental discipline that completely dwarfs his physical strength.

  19. Arisu Sakayanagi

Because she has congenital heart disease and relies on a cane, she is completely physically vulnerable. In a series full of martial artists and physical threats (like Ryūen), Arisu rules purely through psychological dominance, calculated intimidation, and absolute tactical brilliance.

Unlike many anime rivals who are driven by deep-seated hatred or envy, Arisu acts out of pure intellectual fascination. She wants to defeat Ayanokoji not because she hates him, but to scientifically disprove the White Room's philosophy. Arisu is incredibly polite, smug, and theatrical. She treats the school's high-stakes exams like a casual game of chess, bringing a distinct sense of entertainment and charisma whenever she appears.

  20. Akane Tachibana

  21. Albert Yamada

  22. Fuka Kiryuin

While she can be arrogant and abrasive, Fuka is fundamentally an eccentric, fiercely independent lone wolf who acts solely on her own whims rather than out of a desire to torment the weak. Unlike traditional bullies who act out of insecurity, Fuka's arrogance stems from genuine, unwavering confidence. She boasts the highest evaluation stats in the third-year pool alongside Nagumo. She doesn't need a faction, a gang, or underlings to feel powerful. She is perfectly content standing entirely alone against the world.

    A totally awesome female antagonist!

  23. Haruka Hasebe

  24. Haruki Yamauchi

  25. Hiyori Shiina

Despite her gentle, soft-spoken nature, Hiyori is highly perceptive and commands immense respect within her own chaotic class. She acts as a vital stabilizing force for Ryuuen's faction, capable of subtly steering her aggressive classmates toward peace without ever needing to use threats or violence. Hiyori is incredibly sharp. She quickly deduces that Ayanokoji is far more intelligent than he lets on, yet she has zero desire to expose him, blackmail him, or use him to climb to Class A. Her lack of hidden malice makes her one of the most uniquely trustworthy characters in the entire narrative.

  26. Ichika Amasawa

Ichika's true agenda remains incredibly difficult to parse for a long time. She straddles a razor-thin line between a loyal follower of the White Room, a chaotic neutral trickster, and someone deeply, almost obsessively fascinated by Ayanokoji. You never know if she is going to help the protagonist or completely sabotage him. Because she is a successful product of the White Room, she possesses terrifying martial arts skills and a sharp intellect, allowing her to easily overpower seasoned fighters like Horikita and Ibuki simultaneously without breaking a sweat.

Ichika is the strongest girl overall in COTE. She's definitely the toughest female character. Probably in the top 5 best fighters among the entire cast!

  27. Kanji Ike

  28. Masayoshi Hashimoto

He's a spicy character who definitely adds drama!
