Best Horror Anime

The title says it all. Which horror anime freak you out the most?
The Top Ten
1 Another Another is an anime based upon the Novel and Manga of the same name by Yukito Ayatsuji. There also exists a live action movie based on the novel.

I don't consider this anime very scary, honestly, it didn't make me feel horrified at all and the deaths didn't get to me either. They were entertaining to watch and surprising since you don't know who's gonna live and who's gonna die, so I'll give the anime that. I mainly liked the last two episodes since everything went to chaos and it just felt... fun! Okay that may sound a bit messed up, but I like murder montages. I still enjoyed the whole anime altogether, the mysteries were good, and to sum this up, the anime isn't that scary except if you're frightened of gore, or if the tense situations got to you.

2 Elfen Lied Elfen Lied is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Lynn Okamoto. It was originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump from June 2002 to August 2005, with the 107 chapters collected into twelve tankōbon volumes.

I do love horror things, such as Another, Tokyo Ghoul, Higurashi, plenty others. But none of them scared me. Ellen Lied scared me so much, yet it's such a great series. If you're looking for a good horror anime to watch, I totally recommend Ellen Lied, if you want a good scare.

I loved this anime. It's very bloody and gorey, but it's also heartbreaking and sad. I feel bad for all the diclonii and I really hate that organization that they have. It's a very good anime, and if you say it's horrible and that all there is is blood and gore, you only watched 5 minutes of the anime. Finish watching the series

3 Future Diary Future Diary is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Sakae Esuno. The plot surrounds a battle royale in which each combatant has a diary with entries from the future. The manga was serialized in the Kadokawa Shoten's Shōnen Ace between January 2006 and December 2010.

A survival game for those who are chosen to participate fight to the death and the last standing becomes god and prevents the apocalypse from taking over. Beware of Yuno.

Even though this anime scarred me for life, it's still my favourite anime, up there with Elfen Lied and PMMM.

Truly amazing! So many plot twists it left me wanting more!

4 Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, also known as "When They Cry," is a Japanese horror anime and visual novel series. Originally created by Ryukishi07, the series is set in the fictional village of Hinamizawa and follows a group of friends who become involved in mysterious, often violent events. Known for its... read more

As much as I love Elfen Lied, this show fits the horror genre perfectly. I have watched most of it and it is so creepy. It isn't entirely gore like Elfen Lied but has a really creepy atmosphere keeping the suspense and half way through you can almost predict what will happen. Best horror anime. Recommended by me. ( I haven't actually watched another though )

Season 1 scares and confuses the crap out of you, then Season 2 wraps everything up satisfyingly and beautifully, while still scaring the crap out of you. It's characters are all deep and realistic to some extent and the mystery and story is excellently laid out for us

5 Tokyo Ghoul Tokyo Ghoul is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. It was serialized in Shueisha's seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump between September 2011 and September 2014, and it has been collected in fourteen tankōbon volumes as of August 2014.

This is my ABSOLUTE favorite anime and I've watched a lot of anime's over my years and this is the most gore one I've ever watched.

I love it and Kaneki is so badass with his white hair and mask!
All we need now is a unsencored version

6 Corpse Party: Tortured Souls

I suggest with my life this is the scariest series containing four episodes you will ever see. I nearly threw up watching them and actually made me gag several times with guts, gore, and extreme blood and torture! P.S. if you have wattpad, search up Sachiko's Game of Madness! Really bloody but quite good. It is a crossover between Mirai Nikki (The future Diaries) and Corpse party I found. Well, the anime is probably the best horror I have ever seen so go look it up (the anime) it's also a game too!

Watched this at midnight while home alone. It was a mistake. I couldn't sleep. Because I was laughing too hard at the death scenes. Did the same with future diary, another, Higurashi, and Elden Lied. Again, keep in mind that I'm only twelve. I need help.

7 Death Note Death Note is a Japanese television drama anime series based on the manga series of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The show is centered around Light Yagami - a promising highschooler and aspiring detective with a strong sense of "justice".

Not traditionally spooky, but certainly has the best story ever for a horror anime. Are you smart enough to predict what will happen before it does? Will you guess what happens at the end before you see it? Make sure Kira does not write your name on the notebook, for otherwise, your time is short.

How? It's a great thriller series, and a great anime in general, but there's nothing about it that makes it a horror.

I love Death Note but it's not a horror. It's suspenseful and mysterious but in no way is it meant to be scary.

8 Deadman Wonderland Deadman Wonderland is a Japanese manga series written by Jinsei Kataoka and illustrated by Kazuma Kondou, who also wrote and illustrated the Eureka Seven manga, and published in Shōnen Ace since 2008.

Can't wait to see second series of this totally awesome and gripping anime. Deadman wonderland is so bizzare and so brilliant. Love it.

It is dark and scary

Don't be fool be the park's appearance

It is hell

9 Hellsing Ultimate Hellsing is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano. It chronicles the efforts of the mysterious and secret Hellsing Organization, as it combats vampires, ghouls, and other supernatural foes who threaten England.

11 Hell Girl

Love it. But it didn't freak me out a whole lot. The second episode was the main one that scared me cause I was watching it when an old man walked on to the front porch and attempted to open the door. I went and got a knife and stood there mentally dating him to open that door and see how long he lasted. Also my second fear is being stalked do it freaked me out anyway.

The animation was great. The music was incredible. The story line towards the end of the season was really good, horror wise. This has become one of my favorite anime of all time.

12 Attack on Titan Attack on Titan, also known as Shingeki no Kyojin in Japanese, created by Hajime Isayama, is one of the most popular Japanese anime series to be released. The first episode made me feel sick due to its use of gore, but I have to admit it remains one of my favorites. It's relatively disturbing and not for the faint of heart, but it's beautiful and has a nice payoff. It definitely deserves a higher position.

What will Humanity do after an enemy appear who eat humans?
This is something nobody want to see happening to their loved ones...and in this anime, most just prioritize suicide before getting eaten. It's horrible.

This is relatively disturbing. You honestly cannot tear your eyes away. Although you may get used to the gore, you are always excited for the next chomp out of a person. The art is great and really gets the you!

13 Ghost Hunt

This anime was entertaining and several times had me scared to go into any room alone.

The only anime that left me wanting more, but had the most perfect ending I don't know how they could continue. Love this anime!

14 Hellsing Hellsing is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano. It premiered in Young King OURs in 1997 and ended in September 2008.

Easily one of, if not the best horror anime out there. It starts off somewhat slow, but the last few episodes are an unforgettable masterpiece that will stick with you and leave you absolutely terrified.

A frikin amazing anime! My 6th favorite of all time! This is a must watch horror anime!

16 Devilman

I love devilman. Its probably my favorite anime (both crybaby and the 80s ovas)

17 Ghost Stories

How is it a horror? The original was just boring and predictable with nothing interesting about it let alone scary. And the dub was a great comedy, but nothing about it was a horror.

18 Highschool of Dead

Anime version of The Walking Dead.

It wasn't very scary to be honest but I think it was still pretty good

If you say that this is a anime version of the walking dead then you haven't seen this

19 Monster Monster (Japanese: モンスター Hepburn: Monsutā, sometimes referred to as "Naoki Urasawa's Monster") is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Naoki Urasawa. It's just amazing, I watched it in 2 days.
It was really creepy, but the end was so beautiful! I was literally crying..
A must-see anime!

Way better than a lot of the horror animes on here, should be third to elfen lied and future diary.

Screw Tokyo Ghoul. This is obviously better.

22 Paranoia Agent Paranoia Agent is a Japanese anime television series created by director Satoshi Kon and produced by Madhouse about a social phenomenon in Musashino, Tokyo caused by a juvenile serial assailant named Lil' Slugger.
23 Puella Magi Madoka Magica Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a 2011 Japanese anime television series produced by Shaft and Aniplex, directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, written by Gen Urobuchi, music by Yuki Kajiura, opening sang by ClariS, ending by Kalafina (sometimes by the seiyuus) and original characters by Ume Aoki.

This isn't even horror, why did this get mentioned? Sure there may be a few blood scene but it isn't really physiological or gruesome. Great anime in all comparisons but not scary

WHAT THE CRAP?!?! What the heck is this on here for?!?! This is not a horror it's just depressing

Most beautiful anime I've ever seen.

24 Boku no Pico Boku no Pico is an anime series of three OVA episodes created by Katsuhiko Takayama. It was released to DVD on September 17, 2006.

I am scared forever. Nothing can terrify me more than this anime. I can't sleep at nights because of this. Its very traumatic. Watch at your own risk!

With all honesty I respect this anime as a form of artistic expression as it says at the beginning of every episode. I don't personally like it but you could show some respect by taking it off the list

This is the most terrifying anime out there. The other animes don't come close! I had to watch the opening as a dare...
I was SH00K
