Top 10 Worst Christmas Gift Ideas for 2025
If you're doing some Christmas shopping, it can be hard. Here's a simple list to help you figure out what not to get someone so your gift is meaningful and something the other person can actually like and use.
If you want to give a meaningful gift, don't buy anything on this list. Otherwise, that person will be sad on Christmas Day.
-
Self-Improvement Books
This is the biggest way to send an insult to someone by suggesting there's something wrong with them. There are better ways to help someone get the help they need. This is not one of those ways. Just a very insensitive gift that will definitely be taken the wrong way.
-
Weight-Loss Items
Unless you're trying to send an unpleasant hint along with that weight loss book or exercise bike, it's probably not a good idea to get someone those things because it comes off as rude, judgmental, and really insensitive.
Think before you give these things to someone unless they request it, which is a different story.
-
Personal Hygiene Products
If I open a Christmas present, I want something special, not toothpaste or a bar of soap. These are grocery items that I get on a regular basis, not something I should be getting as a once a year Christmas gift.
Unless you're buying high end luxury hygiene stuff, then spare me with this.
-
Clothes that Don't Fit
Clothes can be a good gift unless they don't fit. Then what's the point? The person isn't going to wear it.
Trust me, it's not hard to ask the person what size they wear. I'd rather them ask me that than guess incorrectly. That would prevent an awkward experience on Christmas opening a gift that immediately has to be returned.
If you get a clothing item, always get a receipt at the very least in case it needs to be returned. Don't be the one person who doesn't get a receipt.
-
Cleaning Supplies
Getting someone cleaning supplies is just insulting as hell. Even if your intentions were good, this is something that sends all the wrong messages. Unless they specifically ask for it, that's one thing, but otherwise no.
-
Gag Gifts
These gifts are only funny for about 5 minutes. Then it's a waste. Unless it's a white elephant or something, otherwise these gifts are just annoying and usually thrown away by February.
-
Socks and Underwear
While these are practical items, they aren't necessarily thoughtful. These gifts always bring disappointment to your face ever since childhood.
Yes, it's true that as you get older you learn to appreciate them more, but come on. These are just lazy and most people will buy them throughout the year as needed.
-
Obvious Regifted Items
I get this one is practical and it can help with decluttering, but it's also very easy to see right through. I promise you nobody wants something that is basically a hand me down.
This is especially true if the person you're giving it to was around when you got it originally. I get why people do it, but trust me, it sends an insulting message that you don't value the person enough to even get them something new.
-
Gift Cards to Places They Don't Go
Gift cards are a great gift usually. There's one exception, however. If you give someone a gift card, make sure it's to somewhere they actually like.
If somebody hates McDonald's, don't give them a McDonald's gift card, or a gift card to a cake store when they're on a diet. Just be mindful of what the other person likes. It's not that hard to find something they like.
If all else fails, just give them a standard Visa gift card or cash.

Meme-Related Gifts
Especially if the meme is no longer relevant.
-
Coffee Mugs
Getting someone a coffee mug is just lazy. Why? Because everyone already has about 20 of them. Trust me, it's not that special.
Get a customizable Yeti or something like that instead of just the good old fashioned standard mug. There are better ways to give a coffee related gift to the coffee lover in your life. Standard mugs aren't it. They're just going to sit in the back of the cabinet and be forgotten about.
