Top 10 Most Extremely Overhyped God-Tier Works Of Certain Fictional/Media Genres

While they are legitimately the absolute cream of their crops, you would not BELIEVE how sick I am of hearing about these things

The Top Ten
1 Lord of the Rings (High-Fantasy Novels)

Classic book but extremely outdated and boring; its genre has made GIGANTIC strides in the years upon years since its release, and the movies based off of it unfortunately reflect this in many ways as well, such as the generic "good VS evil" plot, the often-pointlessly slow pacing and the horribly cliched dialogue

2 Thriller - Michael Jackson (Pop Music Albums)

Even ignoring the real-life drama surrounding Jackson himself,
this album really isn't as good as it's made out to be (in retrospect, quite a bit of it is okay at best, which is still WAY more than I can say for at least 90% of the music that it spawned, Smash Mouth included)

3 Super Metroid (Side-Scrolling Metroidvania Games)

If Metroid Prime is treated as the second coming of Jesus by the Metroid franchise's fanbase, then this ridiculously easy bore-fest of a game is most DEFINITELY treated as the third. The controls are slow and clunky, the level layouts are bare-bones and FAR too small, the game as a whole is WAY too short and easy just like Zero Mission and Fusion, the returning-area continuity (ESPECIALLY regarding Brinstar in particular) makes little to no sense whatsoever, the enemies and bosses (aside from Ridley) are absolute pushovers to say the LEAST, remarkably little of the soundtrack actually is exceptionally above average in any particular way other than basic atmospheric effect, you have to wait through a ridiculously long fanfare every single time you pick up even the most negligible items, the graphics are great indeed but still could have been WAY better (as evidenced by its Ancient Chozo hack), the actual tone of the storyline is only slightly dark and looks absolutely happy and sunny ...more

4 The Lion King (Animated Movies)

Great film indeed but not exactly Beauty And The Beast or Hunchback Of Notre Dame
(it DOES have probably THE greatest intro of literally any movie ever created, however)

5 Half-Life 2 (Story-Driven First-Person Shooting Games)

Compared to Half-Life 1, HL2's story was a lot better indeed (still not exactly good, but at least better if nothing else), but its gameplay was WAY less challenging and required way less strategy; by the time that Gordon got his hands on the SMG, you could basically play at least 80% if not 90% of the combat more-or-less EXACTLY like your average Call Of Duty game and still come out of it perfectly fine (and if you're expecting challenging platforming and puzzles, NOPE to that as well, when not factoring Episodes One and Two into the game's equation)
Don't even get me STARTED on Episode Two's unresolved cliffhanger ending either

6 The Dark Knight (Superhero Movies)

In some ways, I actually preferred the Dark Knight Returns animated film over this, as it actually relied on more than two specific characters (cough, Joker and Two-Face, cough) to make it interesting and also characterized Batman himself accurately to how he was portrayed in the Animated Series (don't get me wrong, however; this is still an absolutely toppest-of-the-top-tier pseudo-philosophical action flick regardless)

7 The Walking Dead (Zombie Shows) The Walking Dead is an American horror drama television series developed by Frank Darabont, based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. Andrew Lincoln plays the show's lead character, sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes, who awakens from a coma discovering a world overrun by zombies, commonly referred to as "walkers" . Grimes reunites with his family and becomes the leader of a group he forms with other survivors. Together they struggle to survive and adapt in a post-apocalyptic world filled with walkers and opposing groups of survivors, who are often more dangerous than the walkers themselves. ...read more.

Overrated for a lot of the same reasons as Last Of Us, minus the "game" parts

8 South Park (Animated Surrealist Social-Satire Cartoons Specifically For Teenagers And Adults) South Park is an American adult animated sitcom created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone for the Comedy Central television network. The show is about four boys, who are Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick, and their adventures in South Park, Colorado.

Was just plain stupid (although still admittedly pretty funny at times) during its first three seasons, hit an absolutely AMAZING stride during roughly Seasons 4-15 or so, and is now rapidly devolving into a preachy SJW-pandering mess (with Garrison Trump unfortunately being merely the beginning)

9 Ok Computer - Radiohead (Alt-Rock Music Albums)

In terms of its satirical message and the way that it communicates it (assuming that you actually CAN understand what Yorke is saying, that is) and how much it COMPLETELY revolutionized the alt-rock genre as a whole, not to mention Radiohead itself, from the ground up, this album EASILY lives up to its hype if you ask me, but musically, it's most definitely a bit of a mixed bag to put it LIGHTLY (Airbag is just plain repetitive and bland; Paranoid Android's lyrics make absolutely NO sense; Subterranean Homesick Alien, Exit Music, Climbing Up The Walls, Lucky and The Tourist are just downright PAINFULLY slow and dreary; Fitter Happier barely even has backing music and is without a doubt THE most laughably pretentious song I've ever unironically listened to in my entire life; Electioneering is just plain horribly out-of-place with the rest of the album; No Surprises is annoying as hell; Let Down is good except for the fact that it's inspired so many other alt-rock songs that all sound ...more

10 Rocko's Modern Life (Animated Surrealist Social-Satire Cartoons for All Ages) Rocko's Modern Life is an American animated television series created by Joe Murray for Nickelodeon. The series centers on the surreal life of an anthropomorphic Australian-immigrant wallaby named Rocko as well as his friends: the gluttonous steer Heffer, the neurotic turtle Filburt, and Rocko's faithful dog Spunky.

As much as I absolutely adore this show, it just plain REEKS of things that it gets excessively praised for that other shows have/had done far better; for instance:

While the animation of the show is little-to-nothing short of absolute SILKY-smooth perfection, the actual art style supporting said animation is laughable at best when compared to that of its otherwise horrifically overrated Ren & Stimpy competitor
The show's sexual humor and political satire had already been done (for the most part) far more extremely by John-K-era Ren & Stimpy, as well as (also for the most part) with way, way, WAY more subtlety by Spongebob Squarepants
The general theme of the show's intro had already been done more realistically by Doug

While the show certainly does EASILY outdo most of the actual full-on "adult" cartoons in the satire department, South Park is one that it is DEFINITELY not objectively on the level of (mostly just a product of having a broader target audience, but ...more
