Top Ten Most Overplayed Classic Rock Songs

PetSounds
Despite the volume of incredible classic rock songs, radio stations insist on beating the same tracks into the ground. Over and over and over again. Many are indeed fantastic songs, but grow annoying with overexposure.

The Top Ten

1 Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

I actually would quite enjoy hearing this song if it wasn't constantly forced upon me. - PetSounds

I still love this song. It is overplayed for good reason. Excellent musicianship, beautiful imagery. A true rock anthem!

I can't stress enough how tedious this song is. Enough of its infernal praise! - PositronWildhawk

Stairway to Heaven is Led Zeppelin's (a.k.a. the worst band I've listened to) best song, but it is sub-par. - PhoenixAura81

2 Don't Stop Believin' - Journey

It was good but now it has become overplayed. - Pony

Pretty standard early 80s pop-rock song; definitely doesn't deserve being blasted on the radio everywhere you go.

This list seems very similar to the list of top ten greatest songs of all time. Except this. This is nowhere to be seen. Worse still it's still overplayed: Today.

All the songs on this list are overplayed, but Don't stop Believin' gets my vote. There are so many better Journey songs than this.

3 Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

All these songs are great songs and they were overplayed for that simple reason. We can't blame the songs or the bands. We can only stop listening to the radio. I did it. - Metal_Treasure

I agree. I gave up listening to the radio for the exact same reason. Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway are amazing, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to them all the time. - Gg2000

This is a good song but again, I heard it twice in one day. And it isn't the best song of all time. Close, but no cigar, as some people say. - RiverClanRocks

This song is amazing! I could listen to it on repeat all day and not get sick of it

It's overpleayed, but I think it deserves it!

4 Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple

I agree with IronSabbathPriest - Ritchie Blackmore himself said that his favorite Deep Purple song was Perfect Strangers. My favorite is Highway Star and 2nd fave - maybe Perfect Strangers. However, I still love the intro riff to Smoke On the Water - it instantly gets my blood pumping.
I stopped listening to the radio several years ago when I became a metalhead. Currently I listen to only what I want and when I want to. - Metal_Treasure

Child In Time, Highway Star, and Perfect Strangers are all better songs in my opinion. - IronSabbathPriest

I don't think it's their best song. For me it was when I just got into it. But after listening 70-80 songs of theirs, I've found better songs. - zxm

Come on guys, they had much better songs than this! - naFrovivuS

5 Hotel California - Eagles

This is another song I love. But there are so many Eagles songs you never hear as a result of it being played to death. - PetSounds

"Maybe we play this song too much" -Said no radio station ever.

OVERPLAYED is an understatement! Boring guitars and stupid lyrics!

It's a great song, don't get me wrong... but man... is it overplayed!

6 Who are You - The Who

Every single sports stadium insists on playing this. It's not bad, but there are at least a dozen better songs by The Who. - PetSounds

I love this song personally. But it's on the radio SO MUCH it's been stuck in my head for about an hour now! But I loved the music video. Keith Moon is hilarious! - MontyPython

I've heard this about ten million times. Can't they just stop? - Turkeyasylum

Good song, but extremly overplayed - waldo

7 You Give Love a Bad Name - Bon Jovi

This is a good song but I heard it twice in one day! - RiverClanRocks

8 Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

I prefer Come As You Are and About A Girl. I just do. - PositronWildhawk

It's not really classic rock and the song itself is good but man I hear it probably like 5 times a week at least and it gets kind of annoying but hey it's better than hearing people in school turn up their rap music disregarding other people and singing along to the songs (hearing sing alongs in public is one of my pet peeves) so I'm not complaining. - Anonymousxcxc

Not Really Classic Rock But Still Overplayed To An Extent - FettiMC

Very overplayed, but enter sandman should be up there. That song is overplayed to the max!

9 More Than a Feeling - Boston

It's a great song I've come to dislike because of endless overplaying. There's one song that's worse, that's "Maggie Mae" by Rod Stewart, the only song that makes my lower back hurt.

Ironic, considering the lyrics. - PetSounds

I think it's underplayed as of today. But it was a one-hit wonder. - PositronWildhawk

Hear it all of the time. I will like it though!

10 Highway to Hell - AC/DC

This song is complete rubbish. A terrible song by the absolute worst band in history. Most overrated people ever, Angus shoul retire now

Love AC/DC, love the song, but yeah, it’s played too much. You know what AC/DC song is played more than this? Thunderstruck

The Newcomers

? Photograph - Def Leppard

Def Leppard in general are just overplayed on classic rock radio, but this one in particular gets played a lot. That really annoys me. - Gg2000

The Contenders

11 Tom Sawyer - Rush

Id love to hear this on the radio (I never have), along with some others, (La Villa Strangiato, The Trees, Red Barchetta, Fly By Night, Spirit Of Radio, 2112, and the only Rush Song I've heard on the radio, my personal favorite, Limelight.) - Beatlesboy9

No, I hear it much too often in the USA, despite how good it is and despite the relative lack of attention sometimes given Rush.
Again, the primary message is "variety, please". One or 2 songs doesn't and can't define a group and I'd imagine they'd prefer to be acknowledged for body of work. - Billyv

This song is four and a half minutes of synthesizer hell. The person who thinks to play this song on the radio all the time should be drug in the street by their hair and shot in the head.

Not that good to start with. Rush had many better songs

12 Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd

It plays on every classic rock radio station on the face of the Earth, every day. Not an exaggeration.

The single most over played song of all time.

Sweet home Alabama sucks, I'm sorry it just does. - RogerWatersfan1999

Got to keep the rednecks happy. Since they are armed. Yetyet

13 We Are the Champions - Queen

And if it wasn't already overplayed on the radio, every sports team plays it about 5 times during a game.

HATE this song! It is Annoying nonsense.

Used FOR EVERYTHING. Sooo overplayed. - cat_f

I HATE THIS SONG, MOST MAINSTREAM SONG EVER damn - riccc

14 The Final Countdown - Europe

Not a bad song, but how did it get so popular? Posers. - PositronWildhawk

This song is ALWAYS played. Shame really because it is probably one of Europe's worst songs.

I kinda like this song actually

I hate this song so much. It's just awful. There's no emotion. No passion. Just "the final countdown".
Nobody ever shuts up about it. I can't get away from it. Give Stairway To Heaven some credit, that song is good, at least.

15 You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC

I came on this list looking for this song. It's a good tune, but I don't understand why this song gets played more often than most AC/DC songs. Instead of hearing this all the time, maybe we could hear more stuff from the Bon Scott era like "Girls Got Rhythm", "Whole Lotta Rosie", "Let There Be Rock", etc. Again, not a bad song at all, but there's so much more to AC/DC than this.

16 House of the Rising Sun - The Animals

Probably the song I'd say least belongs out of Top Ten in my humble opinion, and from what I hear, but maybe my opinion is tainted by my fondness for it (which I see you note of yours as well). I understand it's inclusion, though and for what it's worth I don't argue that or necessarily disagree - both as I'm sure you hear it too often. My primary wish and reason for commenting is that I'd prefer that other covers of this song get some of its percentage of AirPlay. While The Animals did the most popular and successful version, and perhaps the "definitive" one, it was Not an original composition in lyrics or melody and many others had done interesting versions previously. - Billyv

The Animals are one of, if not THE most underrated rock band. Like Deep Purple, only one of their songs truly hit big. They've had so many more amazing songs, like We Gotta Get Out of This Place, I'm Crying, and Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. - naFrovivuS

I actually love this song. But it gets enough airplay for the entire British Invasion. - PetSounds

I don't care what you guys say. I love this song!

17 Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N Roses

Even if it is overplayed it is still a great song

BAD ASS.

AWESOME - PhoenixAura81

18 Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
19 Hotel California - The Eagles
20 Thunderstruck - AC/DC

Always playing on my local radio station. Can't stand it anymore.

21 Carry on Wayward Son - Kansas
22 Walk This Way - Aerosmith
23 Crazy - Aerosmith
24 Jump - Van Halen

Van Halen's best song. - PhoenixAura81

25 Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan

Great, ground - breaking perhaps, but there are So many fantastic songs from this man, even from the same short time period as this one. - Billyv

"Tangled Up in Blue" is played quite a bit more often.

26 Eye of the Tiger - Survivor

My brother told me to

One of the most overplayed songs of all time. Almost every single time I turn on the radio it is playing. Still. I have had my fill of it to last a lifetime. Both this song, “Eye of the Tiger” and Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock N Roll” used to be good songs. Now I can’t stand either of them anymore.

27 Bloody Well Right - Supertramp

I never hear this great tune on the radio station I listen to. - matty925

28 Time of the Season - The Zombies

Aaargh! Finally, someone who agrees! - PositronWildhawk

29 Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns N' Roses

Still one of the best songs of the century

30 Another One Bites the Dust - Queen

I love this song, along with Bohemian Rhapsody and We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. I grew up on Queen music. Then, I started listening to the radio... - matty925

31 Plush - Stone Temple Pilots

Why are there 90s rock songs on here? They're never played on classic rock stations.

Some of them do now. They've had to add slightly newer stuff to attract younger listeners. - Gg2000

32 Sweet Emotion - Aerosmith
33 Hit Me with Your Best Shot - Pat Benatar

Can anyone tell me why classic hits/classic rock stations in the USA play this song ad nauseum? Because I honestly don't see a point, and this song just gets more monotonous and tiring the more times I hear it.

34 Baby Hold On - Eddie Money
35 Dance the Night Away - Van Halen
36 Surrender - Cheap Trick

? , YOU NEVER HERE THIS SONG! And its one of my favorites

With a New York radio station on in the car, I heard this 3 days in 1 week...and still hear it.

37 Crazy Train - Ozzy Osbourne
38 (Don't Fear) the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

More cowbell! - truckturner

39 Have a Cigar - Pink Floyd
40 Run Like Hell - Pink Floyd

This is the one that got me into Floyd, but now it's too overplayed despite it being a great song. - matty925

41 Behind Blue Eyes - The Who
42 La Grange - ZZ Top

I HATE THIS SONG.

43 Hey You - Pink Floyd

For some strange reason the classic rock station in the city where I live seems to like to play this more than Another Brick in the Wall Part II, Money, or Comfortably Numb.

44 Something About You - Boston

If they don't play the crap out of More Than a Feeling, they play the crap out of this song. I thoroughly detest Boston now!

45 White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
46 Sharp Dressed Man - ZZ Top
47 Gimme All Your Lovin' - ZZ Top
48 Back in Black - AC/DC
49 867-5309 / Jenny - Tommy Tutone
50 Dream On - Aerosmith

I have heard this song so many times that it's neither good nor bad- just meaningless. Radio desensitized the song for me. - Gg2000
