The Top Ten

1 Misty Misty Misty, known as Kasumi in Japan, is a fictional character in the Pokémon franchise owned by Nintendo and created by Satoshi Tajiri. She’s the gym leader in Cerulean city & specializes in water Pokemon. In the games, she’s known as ‘the tomboy mermaid.’ more.

Misty. She is my favourite girl character. She is the prettiest girl. I like her nature of being tomboyish but this is the fact that she is the best water Pokemon trainer. She always fights with Ash but likes him. I support Pokeshipping. Misty and Ash look cuter than Ash and Serena. She is the best. SHE COMPLETELY ROCKS!

I love Misty. She may act like a tomboy, but she really cares deeply for her friends and Pokemon. Her personality sets her away from her older sisters who tease her almost all the time. Her relationship with Ash and Brock is what makes the first five seasons of the Pokemon series worth watching. She may also be short tempered, but she tries to save Brock and Ash from trouble or concequences. She may not also not know how to cook, but she surely knows how to defend her friends and her pokemon from villains. Moreover, the relationship Ash and her have is cute, especially when Ash would turn green in envy when someone would flirt with Misty. Or when Misty would be super jealous when a girl flirted with Ash. To be honest, you don't see Ash jealous when Tierno would flirt with the "new and improved" Serena? Because of Ash and Pikachu who destroyed Misty's bike, Misty followed them on their journey to charge Ash for her bike. During their journey, she noticed how kind Ash was to Pokemon and ...more

I enjoyed watching Misty in the original Pokemon series. The best thing about her is how well-rounded her character is and the development she gets during the series. She's naive, and annoying, and rude, as well as kind sweet and funny. She has this strong personality that you don't see anymore in the newer seasons. The relationship she had with both Ash and Brock just worked so well and their friendships made the series worth watching. Although many people bash her for being abusive to her Pokemon, particularly psyduck, deep down Misty truly cares about all her Pokemon and will even sacrifice her own life to protect them (ie that one episode when she shielded her gyarados from attacking tentacruel)

Many people hate her (mostly for shipping reasons) but I myself found a way to love her despite her flaws. She was a very unique character, especially when most girls in cartoons where one dimensional at the time.

Misty will always be the very best that no one ever was.

Misty is my favorite character in Pokemon. I love her

2 Ash Ketchum Ash Ketchum Ash Ketchum, known as Satoshi in Japan, is a fictional character in the Pokémon franchise owned by Nintendo. Ash is training to be a Pokemon Master, with his buddy Pikachu. Ash tries to stop the evil Team Rocket from stealing his Pikachu.

Everyone talking about how crappy Ash is needs to listen. This is getting a little stupid. All anyone does on these lists is criticize characters for stupid reasons because they're popular. Ash is a 10 year old kid. He may not be the brightest or the most mature but he is really caring and has grown as the show progressed. He may not have aged physically, but he did it mentally.

Ash gets a lot of hate for all the wrong reasons. He's one of the finest kid role models to come off the T.V. screen since he knows it takes more than power to be a hero/champion, it also takes humanity and compassion. He releases his Pokemon for the RIGHT reasons (to avoid becoming a bully like Gary) and when he proves his worth to the world (by helping others and beating gym leaders based on the challenge they are supposed to be) he earns his powerful Pokemon back (like Charizard beating Gary). Some have complained about Ash not going for type advantage victories. Those kinds aren't as honorable as disadvantage victories nor are they as glorifying. Don't believe me? Compare running a field to climbing a mountain, the former anyone can do, while the latter takes skill. The last complaint I will counter is people think he hasn't developed when he actually has, it's very subtle, but it is there.

A lot of people use the fact that Ash is caring as a basis for their reasons. They say that he really cares for his Pokemon and wouldn't let harm come to them and all that. Well, at least some of them accept the fact that Ash is dumb, that's nice, what they can't connect is that sometimes, Ash's stupidity leads to his Pokemon getting hurt like when he made Pikachu use Thunder on his Swellow in an attempt to turn Swellow Super Saiyan. Perhaps he didn't mean it but because of his utter moronic dumbness and immaturity it happened, that Thunder must've hurt for that Normal and FLYING type Swellow. - NightAbsol

There are some people who think ash is stupid he never wins he is a loser are all wrong he is the main protagonist of the anime and always will there are really some writers who never let him win.

3 Brock Brock Brock is a character from Pokemon and is created by game freak & Nintendo. He was the first gym leader in pewter city, and specializes in rock Pokemon . more.

This was tough for me, I had to choose between Dawn, Misty, Serena, and Brock, because I believe that these characters have had the strongest influence on Ash throughout his journeys. But ultimately I chose Brock. First off, Dawn is my favorite female character in the entire anime series thus far, because of the way she grew with Ash and the unbreakable bonds between her pokemon and Ash's. Same goes for Misty. Serena helped Ash through a lot of his downtimes and learned to stay strong like Ash, but ultimately was a lag-behind kind of character who simply admires but does not really influence. He has helped Ash through hell and is probably THE SOLE REASON why Ash has changed from a s-of-a-b kid into a mature trainer. Out of all the characters, he has stayed with Ash the longest. He acts like a father to Ash and is a great caretaker for the entire Pokemon family, an expert cook, breeder, and pokemon trainer in general. Ash has matured because of Brock, a true role model except when he ...more

Ash is okay, but brock is the best. His relationship with Ash symbolizes the student/mentor relationship that Cilan and Tracey just don't provide. He also has a comical side, the way he hit on girls got more amusing in Advanced Generations, and got funnier again in Diamond and Pearl. When he left in Diamond and Pearl, you knew it was for real this time, because he was doing something that would keep him away from the others. He has left a gap in the series that no one can fill. There is no replacement for Brock. - HeavyDonkeyKong

He is definitely a fave he has lots of funny parts in it and is good throughout the series the one thing I dislike is how he seems to be multiple people as at the gym he mean and a bit cruel to ash then he seems like the poor guy who has to take care of loads of kids and wear clothes like woman's the he is a super friendly guy who just joking ash randomly then he is crazy for girls overall though he is a cool character

When I was 10 I had a crush on brock
He is funny

4 Dawn Dawn Dawn is a character from Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. In the games diamond, pearl, and platinum version she was one of the playable characters you can choose from. She will be an assistant for professor Rowan if you choose her male counterpart, Lucas. more.

Dawn actually had good personality a good friendship with Ash, and had some bad-ass Pokemon like Mamoswine. People hating on her for being "girly" should be no excuse, misty is just as girly as dawn was. Hating bugs, wearing revealing clothing, and rarely battled! Dawn is more tomboyish then Misty will ever be, risking her life to save Pokemon, don't see Misty doing that everyday!

Dawn also had that spark that made you remember her, she didn't breeze through every contest with not skills whatsoever like May. It's like they re-wrote may as a character but made her have a better personality and actually improve (bonus point for a better friendship with Ash! ) Dawn takes the cake for being better then Misty and May but what about Serena and Iris?

Serena is just awful to begin with, her childhood crush was adorable at first but as the series went on she was more a stalker then anything else! So obviously every main character in the series is better then Serena! So ...more

Dawn is awesome! And like this comment if you think she would be a perfect replacement for Ash. Unlike Ash, she cares about her Pokemon, and tries to let the world know how great they they are through coordinating. She has an interesting backstory. Her mother is a famous coordinator, and wants to follow in her footsteps. Ash just.. Wants to become a Pokemon master. That is boring. Though I do think Dawn should've gotten Chomchar, as Piplup is a bit of brat.. And that Ash wasn't very nice to Chimchar, you just need to pay attention to notice. But, in my opinion trading Buizel for Aipom was Dawns biggest mistake. For one thing, Ash didn't even catch Aipom! It just followed him, so technically he stole it. And Dawn worked so hard to get that Buizel, and even though Buizel didn't like coordinating, it would have been better off worth Dawn. And I'd like to use this to point point out that Aipom was a jerk. For one thing the Aipom evolves into Ambipom, and leaves Dawn forever to play Ping ...more

I don't see why people think Dawn is so annoying. For me, I saw her as a brave, determined, playful, sweet, ditzy, girly, fun-loving, character. And not only is she lovable, but she's a role model with the reason being because she's relatable. She got cocky and lost appeal rounds in two contests. And this made her question her ability to achieve her dream. But afterwards, Dawn beat May in the Wallace Cup, and had won a major amount of maturity because of it. This was a very important lesson that we all need to learn and for me, it was portrayed very well with her. And besides, Misty was rude, Iris was annoying, and Serena I can't begin to describe. And May was great, but Dawn is the winner!

shes sexy - Unharmless

5 May May May is a female companion to Ash in the generation 3 anime. She was also the female character in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. May (anime) debuted in the 275th episode, "Get the Show on the Road!" She was going to be a trainer, but wasn't excited about it. After meeting a more.

I loved Pokemon from the start, but didn't have a favorite character until May. She was a right mix with tomboy and girly. She was cool, not the cute/sexy or super tomboy stereo type. She had a great Pokemon team of both bad ass and cute Pokemon. And she had one of the best sets of rivals in the show up to date. All the other not Ash main characters had lack luster rivals I think. And I Drew and Harley where more fun rivals then even most of Ash's rivals. So overall she just had a great complete package. Great rivals, great Pokemon team, avoids being a walking stereo type like Serena. Cool outfit (opposed to most girls being cute in their outfits these days ugh) and she had a real character arc where she grew as a person. That's why uptill this point she is still my favorite character. I also love the original 3 Misty Brock Ash, but they are best together. They had great chemistry and worked best as a group. Not one of the groups that followed worked half as well I think. I didn't ...more

I think her outfit rocks, I love the bandanna style and I have a special attachment to her design because my first game was Emerald and May's the girl main character in Emerald. I like the fact that the writers didn't put in a lot of hints at May being together with Ash because I detest Ash and every Pokegirl, even Serena, deserves better. She also has a nice personality, with mood swings so extreme it's hilarious, like one moment she's nice and gentle and the next she's seething in anger (at Max most of the time) so she's not too abrasive (like Misty) but not too girly and gentle (like Serena). Also I ship May and Drew, they're so cute together! - NightAbsol

Serena is a piece of babyish crap. Dawn is to girly and fancy, and always wasting time. May didn't care about any of those things. I think she's the best, compared to the other stupid suckers.

Ok so at first I didn't like any character at all then I found 3 series XY/XYZ diamond and pearl and finally advanced battle you can guess who won my heart

6 James

James is the true Pokemon Master. He gets beat up by everyone, even his own Pokemon, and he still stays all adorable and optimistic. Whenever he gets a Pokemon for his team in the show, he asks them politely. Ash isn't even that nice to his Pokemon at all, excluding Pikachu. Not to mention...
James is the Mighty Moltres.

I love James! His personality is the best, he is the softy of the Team Rocket trio and that is so cute. And his bottle cap collection. But he has had a ruff past and you kinda have to feel sorry for him. Even though he's part of the evil team.. He isn't really evil. James cares for all his Pokemon and friends very much. He's a very sweet young man.
James is also the Mighty Flaming Moltres!

James is great! He is very loyal to his friends and cares a lot for his Pokemon. He doesn't even need to weaken them. He just asks them and they join him of their own free will. He also showed on several occasions that he cares for Ash and his friends too. James is just precious.

The true Pokémon master

7 Serena Serena Serena has proven to be a kind and polite girl but she can also be openly rebellious towards her mother, Grace. In Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin!, she refused to wake up when Grace ordered her to, and gave a sassy response to her mother's call to watch the news. This tumultuous relationship more.

A stereotypical female who's only interested in clothes, pastries, and Ash. And then everyone wants to say she's better than Dawn. Well Dawn might have been girly, but she was also brave and sweet, caught Pokemon of different shapes and sizes, and went head on to become Top Coordinator. Serena on the other hand, is fearful, and snobby, took more than 40 episodes to catch 2 Pokemon, and only wanted to become a performer to dance around and wear fancy clothes. Yeah, I think we all know who is

Why? She's A air headed pink Barbie replacement trying to play A love interest that wont happen.

Serena's character is special. You either lover her or hate her... there's no "in the middle". Most people hate her because they feel as though she serves no purpose in the anime, but I have a theory.

As we all know, Ash's journey has been going on for almost 20 years now, and over the years, he has been getting closer and closer to winning the a league. Eventually, he will win the league, and I feel like that day he wins is really close.

When he does win a league, the writers will be left in a tough spot. They can't continue Ash's journey after he wins a league, because that's what he wants the most. His whole journey has been to do with winning the league and becoming a Pokemon Master. Once Ash does that, his whole journey will be over. He will most likely aim for being a Champion (probably of Kanto since it was never revealed to us who the Champion of Kanto was.)

Ok, so after that, we, as fans, will need a closure to his story... and that would be a ...more

Most people choose Misty only due to nostalgia.

8 Clemont Clemont Clemont originates in Pokemon XY, created by Nintendo & game freak. is a gym leader of the lumoise city. He specialized in electric Pokemon and is known as a genius. more.

Cool guy that never gives up on inventing even if most of his inventions blow up in his face he still puts his heart into everything he does! Gotta love Clemont!

The future is now..THANKS TO SCIENCE!...No, Bonnie I'm not going to marry her...

Clemont is awesome I have a small crush on him but not as much as cilan!

Only voting Clemont because his Chespin is the actual best character entire show.

9 Jessie

NNO! Jessie NEEDS to be next to James! I do honestly like James more, BUT, Jessie still deserves credit! Plus,(I'm being a total Rocketshipper here) Jessie and James are so cute together! And even though I prefer James, Jessie should still be in in the top ten! Plus, Jessie may seem like a self centered jerk, but she's actually a really strong female character who lost her mother at an extremely young age and I don't think she ever had a father. I'm not saying that James isn't strong, because both him AND Jessie went through pure crap to be free and now they have to steal Pokemon just to do so! MAKE JESSIE IN THE TOP TEN!

You might think she is stupid and annoying but she is ten times better then caterpie-hater misty. I feel really sorry about Jessie's child hood. It isn't her fault she ended up so spoilt

She is awesome, Jessie definitely diseves to be higher than pikchu! Jessie actually has personally! Pikachu can't even talk! Jessie is so cool and is the leader of the team rocket trio and team rocket (Jessie James and meowth) are my favourite characters in the anime! Jessie Is so awesome and she can be serious and also funny unlike pikachu! Pikachu is the real criminal, he always hurts team rocket and blast them of every single time!

Jessie rocks. She has a complicated story, she is really strong as a person.

Pikachu deserves credit. All of you ash fans out there! Pikachu saved his live

How come pikachu is not number one... he is the cutest thing I have ever seen

I got married to a stuffed Pikachu once. So yeah, I love Pikachu.

Toltly Cute He should be next to ash Best pokemon ever

The Contenders

11 Iris Iris Iris is from the Pokemon bwhite version & Pokemon black 2 & white. She ether was the gym leader in Opelucid city in white version. She first appeared to aid Bianca, Burgh, and the playable character when Bianca's Munna was stolen, & acted as a bodyguard. In Black 2 & White 2, she was the champion. Iris more.

She playfully calls Ash a little kid, unlike Misty, who SLAPS HIM!

Iris: Playfully teases Ash. Everyone HATES her. She has darker skin.

Misty: Physically abuses him with hammers and other weapons. Everyone LOVES her. She has lighter skin.

Do I smell racism?

I think iris is a wonderful character. A breath of fresh air after 2 regions with contests. Yes she is annoying at times with her "What a kid" catchphrase but blame the writers. It's not Iris' fault that the writers completely restarted the season. They do that almost every region.

Iris is really sweet, adventurous, and has a lot of similarities to Ash which is why they're friends. She playfully teases him but cheers and cares about him just as much! - simplyafan

Let me get this straight! You don't mind brocks hormones and misty abusing? But when it comes to a catchphrase " just a kid" You go from 0 to 100 real quick? She is a lot better than any other pokegirl ahs has traveled with by far!

12 Gary Oak Gary Oak Gary oak appeared in the anime series in seasons 1-5 . He was ash's rival and childhood friend . Though they had a dispute once they fought over a rusty pokeball they wanted for luck, which broke after they fought over it . Gary was the grandson of professor oak . He had cheerleaders & his own car. more.

Gary is Ash's BEST rival in my opinion. Yeah, he's not as strong as Paul or Alain, but he cares about his pokemon and the one who knew Ash the longest. They're childhood friends before they became rivals. At first, they are fierce competitors, with Gary always one step ahead of Ash and Ash struggling to keep up. Its not an instant hate relationship like Ash and Paul. Nor is Gary always bragging with no reason like Trip. Nor is he always nice like Ritchie. At the end of the Orange Islands Arc, he beat Ash who won the league with the same name. In the Johto Arc, he became more polite and kind, humbled from his defeat in the Indigo League. Still, he keeps the fire igniting under Ash and keeps on making his grandpa proud. When Ash defeated him, Gary even congratulated his rival and gave him half of the pokeball and deciding to become a researcher like Professor Oak. He hae several appearances in the anime right after. Gary has one of the best character developments in the anime, from ...more

Geez, Gary. You're TEN and you have a bunch of fan girls, AND you can drive a car?!? One of the best original characters by default!

I consider Gary to be about 12 or 13. Either way he is so much better than Ash by a million times. - RiverClanRocks

Gary Gary he's our man if he can't do it no one can!

Dude, Gary is the biggest jerk I've ever seen, its always fun to have him in an episode, HOW CAN HE BE THIS LOW

13 Max

Who says he was annoying... Pokemon battling is about theory knowledge and application and he was always on the right track... he was very smart for being just 7... Well, not to sat, protagonists like Ash, May, Dawn (and so on..) really, really made me feel strange... those strange type of brains that they used to apply during battles, those tactics and they worked too, because their opponents were also foolish just like them... Ash's (May's and Dawn's too) too much practical tactics which they used to develop instantly during battles was a concept less type of thing... These characters never pre planned the battle, no care about Pokemon type matching, moves learnt, way of shooting out the moves or anything else... They just seemed like illiterate battlers. depending upon in battle consciousness, in battle tactics which worked just because their opponents were even worse than them. Believe me, this is the truth. Exceptions were there, Max and Brock were totally different in their ...more

He may have been 7, and had a kinda know-it-all attitude at first, but he is another person who matured throughout the series and probably will become a Pokémon trainer soon!

Max is kinda cute and funny, and so annoying he's annoyingly good! - RueSapphireShiverpool

Max may be a know-it-all, and annoying, but damn it, he's so funny and extremely adorable... Plus he matured...

14 Cilan Cilan Cilan is one of the three Gym Leaders of Striaton City's Gym, known officially as the Striaton Gym, in Pokemon Black and White. In the anime, he is classified as an A-class Pokemon Connoisseur and traveled with Ash Ketchum in the Unova region. He first debuted in Triple Leaders, Team Threats!.

I'm one of the only people on this site that actually likes Cilan. - RiverClanRocks

So you think I've failed life just because I like a certain character you don't? - RiverClanRocks

He's cute and Burgundy bullies him! He stood up to ash and is a very good sport! I think he's unique and mysterious.

I love Cilan, he is pretty cool and humorous. As well as being fabulous at the same time! - Flowersocks2137

He might be liow on the list but I find it amusing that Cilan is the connoisseur of pretty much everything

15 Giovanni

He's a awesome villain boss! - Weasltown

16 Nurse Joy

How come she's not the top three she saved pikachu that saved ash that ash saved to saved and got saved by her

17 Paul

I'm glad that the cartoonists created a character with a narcissistic personality disorder thus showing kids that the only way to defeat a bully is to prove them wrong without giving up just as ash did near the end of the series.

Paul definitely is a different trainer than anybody else in the Pokemon franchise because he abandons his Pokemon and says nothing positive to his Pokemon after he fails

Even though Paul is a grumpy and cold hearted trainer there still must be a sweet part of him inside.

He was, like, so mean to ash so he should not be on this list

18 Mewtwo Mewtwo Mewtwo is a fictional creature from Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon media franchise. It was created by Dr. Fuji in an attempt to clone Mew.

I don't get this. This Pokemon deserves every bit of attention that it can get and a lot more understanding. I know people don't swoon over it like they do over Ash, the trainers and the coordinators, but come on! Despite having a dark, cold exterior, it is wise beyond its experiences and does care deep inside. And he is the best experiment ever!

Mewtwo is the best... I can't belief it is that low

So I am simply the end result of your experiment. What becomes of me now that your experiment is over?

He is the best, he can use pokeballs on pokemons, can use goku's psystrike, he is a hero

19 Meowth Meowth Meowth is a Pokémon species in Nintendo and Game Freak's Pokémon franchise. Created by Ken Sugimori, Meowth first appeared in the video games Pokémon Red and Blue and subsequent sequels. In addition, it was one of the Pokémon to get an Alolan variant. It later appeared in various merchandise, spinoff more.

Most clever and funniest character ever. The way he thinks and talks, and various times he cheat innocent Pikachu and Ash :)) I don't understand Japanese, but I love to watch Japanese version just to listen how he speaks.

People, watch 'Go West Young Meowth'! It's really sad, Meowth is rejected time and time again and joins a stray street gang, and then you find out why Meowth actually joined Team Rocket - because he was sad and angry. - RueSapphireShiverpool

Meowth is the best. Funny and cute!

Hey! Why did all of you twoips put me down so low? Watch "Go West Young Meowth" and put me up there!
