Top 10 Rock Bands That Have Improved Over Time

Rock bands that have improved during their career overall.

The Top Ten

1 Breaking Benjamin Breaking Benjamin Breaking Benjamin is a American post-grunge/alternative metal band formed in 1998. The bands members all changed in the time between 2010 to 2014, with the exception of Ben Burnley (Vocals). The Ex-Members included Chad Szeliga (Drums), Aaron Fink (Guitar) and Mark Klepaspi (Bass). more.

Breaking Benjamin opened my eyes to not just rock, but music as a whole! They've inspired me to write and play since the very beginning and I respect everything about the band and my idol Ben Burnley!
Their sound and style never ceases to amaze me! Never changes too much, and if it does it's always for the better!
The diary of Jane will always be my favourite song but I can't wait to here their hopefully new stuff soon!
Rock on you Legendary Gods!

Were great to begin with, but over time they've got better better, Phobia and Dear Agony are their two latest studio albums and are the best in my opinion.

Phobia and Dear Agony are two of the greatest albums ever. They've improved immensely throughout time from their first studio album to their fourth. Skillet have also massively improved over time too overall, those two should be top of this list.
I dunno why Linkin Park are on this list though, because they're nowhere near as good as they used to be. - EvilAngel

They are one of the only bands I know that didn't start going downhill, and "Failure" is easily my favourite song from them!

2 Skillet Skillet Skillet is an American Christian rock band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1996 and based in the United States.

Skillet are EASILY number one for improvement in my opinion, and Breaking Benjamin are easily number 2. The Skillet originally started off as a small unknown Christian Rock band, back then John Cooper had very weak vocals, there were no great guitar solos, and there wasn't any real strength or punch to their songs. However, their 2003 album Collide changed all that, and with it they improved massively. Their 3 most recent albums, Collide, Comatose and Awake are much better than anything they'd done before. They've changed their style and changed their genre.

Skillets music has its own amazing but unique sound to it. There is no band that I think sounds like skillet and I believe they should be number 1 on this list they have improved so much since there first album.

This band so the world that you must patient and never stop trying. Their first four album was suck but their second four album was great.

This guys actually got better until Collide or Comatose
Then again they got bad - Idiot244

3 Bring Me The Horizon Bring Me The Horizon Bring Me the Horizon is a British rock band from Sheffield, Yorkshire. Formed in 2004, the group currently consists of vocalist Oliver Sykes, guitarist Lee Malia, bassist Matt Kean, drummer Matt Nicholls, and keyboardist Jordan Fish. They are signed to RCA Records globally and Columbia Records exclusively more.

I feel like the longer their music goes on, the more innovative the band becomes. From starting out as sheerly deathcore, to gradually adding electronics or guest starring others from different genres (such as the Canadian female singer, Lights, and her appearance in the song "Don't Go", to Oliver sharpening both his singing and screaming skills, to even adding interesting hooks like the sarcastic cheerleader intro of their newer song "Happy Song" (which isn't at all happy by the way), this band never stops evolving, and that's why they are my favourite.

That said, their newest album to date, That's the Spirit, shows how much more mainstream they have become, making me fear that sooner or later, they may lose their metalcore or even rock sound altogether in trade for a new mainstream pop sound. If this happens, I swear to god I''ll cry.

Sempiternal is the best rock album of 2013. This is not up for debate.

Screw Arctic Monkeys. THIS is the band that makes me proud of where I am from, Sempiternal is the best album of 2012 & 2013 - Reptile

I agree. Everything since Sempiternal is great. - Elijah_Cook

4 Linkin Park Linkin Park Linkin Park is an American rock band formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1996. The members include Chester Bennington (vocals), Mike Shinoda (rapping vocals, pianist), Brad Delson (guitar), Dave "Phoenix" Farrell (bass), Joe Hahn (DJ) and Rob Bourdon (drums). Linkin Park are associated with a mixture more.

I just don't understand. I think Living Things was their best album. Pretty much everyone who hates Linkin Park for what they are now has obviously not took the time to listen to their new stuff, just because they changed their sound.

Also, for anyone complaining they went "soft"?
Listen to Blackout, Lies Greed Misery, Victimized, and nearly all of The Hunting Party. They are not soft.

Also, they didn't sell out. It would be more like selling out for them to start making music just like their old fans wanted, when they themselves stopped enjoying that music, and switched to what they are now.

They've matured. I think everything they've done is amazing, and people are too quick to judge. - somelifeonaplanet

By changing only they are so close to me

In reality one more light was awesome

5 Pantera Pantera Pantera was an American Heavy Metal band formed in 1981 by guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul. The band started out as a Glam Metal act in the 1980s with little success. After discarding their original lead vocalist and enlisting Phil Anselmo, the band signed a major record deal with more.

They got a lot better, but Dime was always awesome, he just got a lot more - EliHbk

6 Disturbed Disturbed Disturbed is an American heavy metal band from Chicago, Illinois . The band comprises vocalist David Draiman, bassist John Moyer, guitarist Dan Donegan, and drummer Mike Wengren . They are known for songs like "Down With the Sickness" and "Stricken" .

Every single member in this band has gotten progressively better and better. This band deserves to be number 1 without any doubt in my mind.

Awesome lyrics and epic ness rushing through disturbed's veins. I also love their concept art of the albums!

True after believe their albums got way better though their first two albums were still good - christangrant

These guys and skillet are amazing

7 Blind Guardian Blind Guardian Blind Guardian is a German power metal band formed in the mid-1980s in West Germany. They are often credited as one of the seminal and most influential bands in the power metal and speed metal subgenres. Heavily influenced by Queen, they use the technique of overdubbing. They also incorporate large more.

Their recent album (2015) is my favorite and it's an awesome result of constant improvements. They've been improving for 30 years - Metal_Treasure

8 Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold is an American alternative metal/metalcore (early) band, that was formed 1999 in California. Their longest lineup of members was M. Shadows (Vocals), Synyster Gates (Lead Guitar), Zacky Vengeance (Rhythm Guitar), Johnny Christ (Bass Guitar), and The Rev (Drums). more.

Started off as a terrible metalcore band and evolved into an amazing heavy metal band. Not that there is anything wrong with metalcore, such as great bands like All That Remains (Fall of Ideals era), but a7x's adoption of it was awful. Matt Shadows is an extremely talented vocalist, but not meant for screaming. His screams in Unholy Confessions were dreadful, but now his powerful vocal range is properly showcased in their newer work. Ever since the 2005 album City of Evil, a7x has been one of the best bands there is. Now Shadows can display his vocal prowess, Gates can shred, and the Rev could drum like no one else.

These guys should be number one! Listen to Sounding the Seventh trumpet compared to Hail to the king! Especially the vocals. I'll admit this, well to me Matt didn't sound the best on the first 3 albums. But the white album, Nightmare and Hail to the king sound 10 times better! And without the Rev they have continued and gained power to make awesome music again! My opinion

The music was always great, but the singing just wasn't there on the first two albums. Once Matt stopped growling, they instantly sounded much better. I wish they would re-record their first two albums, they would be great. But even after City of Evil, they just continued to get better and really focus on what makes heavy metal as great as it is. - Songsta41

All the people on this site who hate on A7X probably only listened to a couple of the metalcore songs. They don't realize that A7X has greatly improved.

9 Iron Maiden Iron Maiden Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. The most critically acclaimed period for the band was from 1983-1989. With vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris, lead guitarist Dave Murray, rhythm guitarist Adrian more.

Modern maiden is amazing, but I don't think they're necessarily improving. Their 80's stuff is the best, and their 21st century stuff is nearly as good (it's also incredible), but I have to say yes to that because they had a bit of a lull with Blaze Bayley and they've been improving ever since he left. Their new album The Book of Souls rivals Number of the Beast for their best album, in my opinion. - Songsta41

Iron Maiden got better over the course of their first 3-4 albums and then plateaued and then went down hill in the 1990's but now they are bigger than ever! Their 2010 release, Final Frontier, went #1 IN 28 COUNTRIES!

That doesn't mean that this album is their best work, the best albums are killetrs, number of the beast, powerslave! Idiots

Brave New World is easily Maiden's best album ever. If you think Number of The Beast're an idiot. That album had Invaders and Gangland - 2 of the worst Iron Maiden songs I've ever heard.
A Matter Of Life And Death is on par with Powerslave.
In terms of live performance, they've accelerated in every department.

10 Death Death Death was an American Death Metal band formed in 1983 by Chuck Schuldiner. Death is considered to be one of the most influential bands in heavy metal and a pioneering force in death metal. Its debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, has been widely regarded as the first death metal record, while the band's more.

They have never released a bad album and some of their best stuff like Human, Symbolic and The Sound of Perserverence later in their career.

The Contenders

The band was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl after the death of Kurt Cobain and the dissolution of his previous band. Sonic highway is their best yet!

Wasting Light was their best album other than the colour and the shape, but no album of theirs can can ever beat that

Foo Fighters is not just a rock band is a feeling when you listen to their songs you have such an strange feeling inside you and it's the most beautifull feeling in your life

12 Lamb of God Lamb of God Lamb of God is an American heavy metal band from Richmond, Virginia. Formed in 1994, the group consists of vocalist Randy Blythe, guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler, bassist John Campbell, and drummer Chris Adler.

Lamb of God hands down is the best band of the 2000's

13 Tool Tool Tool is an American progressive metal/alternative metal band, that was formed in 1990. more.

Although an uncommmon opinion, I find every album better than the predecessor. Maybe objectively, Lateralus is the best, but I enjoy listening to 10.000 Days the most.

14 Judas Priest Judas Priest Judas Priest are a British heavy metal band formed in Birmingham, England, in 1969. The band has sold over 45 million albums to date. They received a lot of popularity due to their big hits Breaking The Law, You've Got Another Thing Comin', and Living after Midnight which were played on the radio a more.

They had great stuff working up from the 70s to the 80s and then the Painkiller album, but then the Ripper came and Jugulator isn't that bad, but it isn't proper Judas Priest. Nostradamus is great although it also isn't proper Judas and the Redeemer of Souls was a good comeback - SoldierOfFortune

Pendejos means stupid ignorants, judas early work and 80s is the best and that's why jp established themselves as fathers of metal, hhaahaha so many kids here saying and voting

15 Green Day Green Day Green Day are an American pop punk and alternative rock band formed in East Bay, California in 1987. The members include Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals and guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass), Tré Cool (drums) and Jason White (guitar) . Green Day are associated with punk rock, pop punk and alternative rock. Some more.

Green Day have improved so much, think of Nimrod, then American Idiot, the best album of our generation. 21st Century Breakdown was the same while the trilogy of albums were all as good as each other.

Improved the 1st album and other punk album was bad but they changed genre and got better they sell out but still, they sound great

First of all, why the hell are the Jonas Brothers on here. No.

Their music evolved from a distorted '90s punk sound to cleaner sounds with their albums Uno, Dos, and Tre. Don't get me wrong, Kerplunk and Nimrod and 1039 sosh are amazing, but they've improved.

18 King's X

This is stupid, best work from kings x is their early albums from 80s

The band consisted of 5 members - David Gilmour (Vocals and Guitar), Syd Barrett (Vocals and Guitarist), Nick Mason (Drums), Roger Waters (Vocals and Bass), more.

These guys inspired me to come to this list! Their first album was messy and didn't sound good, and as I scrolled through their discography, I realized I liked every album more than the last one. That happened until I was done looking through it. Pink Floyd has been getting progressively (pun intended) better all their career and they deserve to be number one on this list. - Songsta41

20 Three Days Grace Three Days Grace Three Days Grace is a Canadian rock band formed in Norwood, Ontario in 1997 with a line-up consisting of guitarist and lead vocalist Adam Gontier, drummer and backing vocalist Neil Sanderson, and bassist Brad Walst. In 2013 Gontier left the band due to creative differences. He was replaced with Brad's more.

Three days grce are like old school. No one can do what they did and they deserve to be at number 3. There album life starts now was amazing however the transit of venus was not as good but songs like chalk outline and the high road were amazing. Long live three days grace.

They seemed a bit shy of their first songs for the first two albums, but all the people who thought they would stay that way should listen to One-X and Transit of Venus! Amazing band!

Three days grace has a lot of great songs and you can hear the improvement in there music
